Johnny Depp Surprise Appearance at Indian Parade

?

Honorary Member

Johnny Depp?is an honorary member of the Comanche Indian tribe, so it should come as no surprise he showed up at Comanche Nation Fair today in Oklahoma. ?However, the tribe didn?t publicize his appearance at all.

The 21st Annual Comanche Nation Fair is being held this weekend in Lawton, OK ? and none of the locals knew Depp would be there today. We?re Johnny Depp as Tonto told the tribe wanted to keep Depp?s appearance a secret so the parade (where he served as Grand Marshall) was not bombarded with people there just to see Johnny.

As you can see from the video, they succeeded admirably.

Tonto and the Lone ranger

Depp was named an honorary member of the tribe back in May, partly due to the fact he is playing Tonto in the upcoming ?Lone Ranger? movie.

NYC Ferris wheel project has big backers

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Ferris wheel may be a steam-age invention, but it is back in vogue in New York, which this week joined a long list of cities where urban planners or developers have bet that massive, modern versions of the old ride can serve as economic engines.

After the towering London Eye debuted in early 2000, it seemed as if there was no end to the number of cities dreaming about stimulating tourism by building their own giant observation wheel, modeled after the one drawing 3.5 million riders per year in Britain.

Re-creating London's success has proved to be daunting, with failed or postponed projects in a number of world-class cities. But the concept still has luster. Work is being done on two new massive wheels in Las Vegas. Seattle saw a smaller version open on its waterfront last spring.

Now, the biggest test yet will come in New York, where city officials announced Thursday that a private development group had been given approval to build the world's tallest Ferris wheel, at 625 feet, on the waterfront in Staten Island.

The proposal, with a $230 million price tag, is audacious. Its success would rely on people being willing to travel by miles by ferry across New York Harbor to a remote, mostly suburban part of the city that has always been an afterthought to visitors.

Yet the people behind the project, led by a newly formed company, New York Wheel, include some heavy hitters.

The primary financial backers include Lloyd Goldman, a real estate baron who is part of the partnership redeveloping the World Trade Center site, and Joseph Nakash, a co-founder of the Jordache apparel company who now chairs an investment group that also owns airlines and real estate. The third primary investor is The Feil Organization, a real estate powerhouse that owns or manages commercial and residential properties across the country.

New York Wheel CEO Richard Marin spent decades as an executive at Bankers Trust Company, then led a subsidiary at Bear Stearns until some black eyes related to bad bets on mortgage securities led to his departure in 2007. After that, he had a job turning around a distressed real estate portfolio as CEO of Africa Israel Investments.

Now, though those real estate connections, he's found himself in the carnival business ? or at least the venture capital version of it.

"It's a short trip from Wall Street to P.T. Barnum," Marin joked in a phone interview Friday.

Marin said the heft in the investment group shows it isn't just blindly following a trendy tourism gimmick.

While the London wheel was "wildly successful," he isn't naive about the challenge in replicating its success. Marin said the company spent a year and a half in discussions with city officials about a possible site before agreeing on Staten Island.

Under the deal announced Thursday, New York Wheel will pay the city $1 million per year on a 99-year lease for a waterfront location within walking distance of the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Simultaneously, another development group will be building a 350,000-square-foot shopping mall and hotel on the opposite side of the terminal. The neighborhood is already home to a minor league baseball stadium.

"It's a location and a site that I have come to love," Marin said.

Having the wheel next to the ferry, which is already ridden by an estimated 2 million tourists annually, will save the developers about $100 million in transportation infrastructure costs, he said. And, despite the distance from other tourist sites, the view of New York harbor will be thrilling and unique enough, he predicted, to draw the millions of riders needed to earn back the ride's high cost.

Several other giant Ferris wheels built in the past decade have been successful. China's 525-foot-tall Star of Nanchang and Singapore's 541-foot Singapore Flyer have both been a hit with tourists.

In other places, planned wheels never got off the ground. A 682-foot-tall wheel that was supposed to open in Beijing in time for the 2008 Olympics was never completed. An earlier pioneer in the business, the Great Wheel Corp., had projects in the works to build similar wheels in Dubai, Berlin, Orlando, Fla., and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, but all were either suspended or collapsed.

"These are expensive and difficult, big projects," said Wil Armstrong, the North American representative for Starneth, a new company, formed by veterans of the London Eye design and engineering team, that is providing the designs for the New York wheel. "Every city, it seems, of any size, has thought about it. But wanting to do and actually doing it is a large step."

Effective Team Building for Successful Organization - Mobisoft Infotech

Behind Every Successful Organization there is organized, capable, adaptive and dynamic Team.

Times have changed and unlike the earlier times when a small-scale entrepreneur was able to build an empire single-handed. In today?s business scenario, the environment has become so complex and competitive, that it is not easy to achieve success on your?own. The business environment is in a continuous state of turmoil, and achievement of?tasks depends more and more on the outputs of teams rather than efforts of a single?person and there the term Team comes in existence.

What is Team?

A team is group of small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they are mutually accountable. ( Definition by Katzenbach and Smith ? 1993 ). Different definitions are coined by many people for Team. But the purpose behind forming team remains same to achieve common objective.

There are some important aspects of successful teams as follows.

Aspects of the Team Building

To build an efficient Team, approach has to be dynamic and adaptive in this competitive world. However, there are certain aspects of team-building to be followed by the members in order to achieve the end target.

  1. Team should be small in number. Small group is able to deliver better results. If team is say fifty people then it is good to divide it into sub-teams as probability of such bigger team to give better output is less if compared to team of 5-10 people whose probability of successfully sorting out their individual, hierarchical and functional differences, and work towards a common goal, and also be accountable for the results .
  2. To succeed as a team, the team should have appropriate mix of skills and traits. If the team has people with ?homogeneous?skills then it won?t be very effective to accomplish their set goals and objectives. On other hand if team has skills and traits more than what are needed for requirements then it may cause unnecessary disruptions which can affects results. We can explain this aspect by giving example of maintenance team in industry. Such team should consists of different people with different skill sets like mechanical, electrical, civil, information technology. It would become difficult if such team has people with similar skill sets.
So there are basically three categories of team skills:
    1. Technical abilities or expertise needed for the task2. Problem-solving and decision-making skills

    3. Interpersonal skills

  3. Team should set their goals on the basis of requirements placed on them by the organization. This helps the team to define their boundaries and scope of their job.
  4. Team should take common approach to achieve common goal set.
  5. Team?s mutual accountability is the most important aspect of this approach. Mutual understanding is important in team members to work in coordination with each other to target common objective.

As we already know team is group of people with complementary skills who work together to achieve common goals. So it is important for team members to communicate with each other to and keep learning from each other eventually maximizing their strengths and weaknesses. However there are certain principles of team building.

Principles of Team Building

  1. ?Each member?s roles and responsibilities have been written down and explained to them in clear and unambiguous manner.
  2. Every team member should understand their own responsibility and should be committed towards their work to increase the team?s productivity and work towards the team?s success.
  3. Team members should collaborate with each other in order to take their tasks forward smoothly.
  4. Effective Communication becomes essential factor in team building. It is essential for any manager and team members to communicate with each other in freely and openly about nature of work, goals set for team, and methods adopted for accomplishing objectives.
  5. The manager should be polite, humble and approachable so that team members do not hesitate to approach him with whatever issues they might have. This also helps the manager to bring about coordination among team members.

Along with such principles there are some approaches to team building. There are five approaches that are generally followed.

  1. Interpersonal approach: Interpersonal approach is most ancient approach among others emerged in 1950 which is based on human psychology. It develops social and personal awareness between the team members. Better understanding of each other?s nature will help to work easily within team. Interpersonal approach enhances bond between teammates which also enhances productivity.
  2. Role-Definition: This approach is based on roles and norms which exist within team. Defining roles and responsibilities for each person in team, defining expectation from each person enhances coordination between team members which ultimately gives better output while achieving common goal.
  3. Values: This approach is based on values that team members adopt while executing their roles and responsibilities. It is important that the team members have same values. For effective teamwork and coordination, values given to each should be well justified otherwise it would become difficult for team members to work in team.
  4. Task based approach: This approach is based on individual?s skills and how he executes tasks assigned to him and make teamwork successful. It is managers? who should put all the tasks in clear terms. Bigger tasks should be broken down into smaller tasks by manager. Then it becomes individual?s responsibility to contribute in team by working on his tasks to achieve common targets.
  5. Social Identification: It talks about members? need to feel part of team. It is important for each member to understand each other?s point of views, should have good communication with each other, standing in crisis for each others, taking unfinished jobs of other in need to achieve common objectives which are set for the team and not for individual. These things help member to come closer with other member of team and to feel being part of Team which enhances effective teamwork. Each team member should have self esteem and respect for each other to have effective co ordination in team. Some common platforms, interests, knowledge sharing platforms can help members to stand for others in need so that team can reach common targets.

Every individual has always been considered as asset of company. So it is important for any organization to take all such individuals together as a team to become a successful organization and team building techniques definitely make it possible.

How Apple is boosting its iAd platform with ... - The Next Web

Launching last week, Apple?s new iOS 6 software has been very well received; of the 400 million iOS devices in the wild, over a quarter of them have already updated to the new firmware and enjoyed many of the 200 new features present in the OS (just don?t mention Maps).

While many of the features iOS 6 are customer facing, Apple has worked had to make it easy for developers to integrate its new services into their websites and existing platforms.

Take Passbook as an example, if the brand or business understands the feature correctly, passes can be automatically added to a user?s Passbook wallet, deliver notifications, remain location aware and increase the brightness of a device?s screen to ensure passes can be scanned easily.

Apple has also begun making the new features in its iOS 6 platform directly available to advertisers. As part of its iAd refresh, Apple has enabled a number of iOS 6 specific features in its advertising platform, taking its service beyond the normal ?click and visit? banner ads that you may see delivered on mobile websites.

Yesterday, Apple updated its ad creation tool: iAd Producer. Updating it to version 3.1, Apple included the following new features:

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Save a Reminder
  • Save a pass in Passbook
  • Creating messages with SMS attachments
  • Support for building ads that access an advertiser?s web site.
  • Medium banners available for iAd projects delivered to iPads running iOS 6.
  • iAd JS updated to version 1.6.1.

While some of the new features are platform-specific, most of them directly impact how an iOS device owner interacts with the iAds they come upon in supporting apps.

Take ?Follow on Twitter? as an example; Apple has integrated both Twitter and Facebook into its core operating system, meaning that if an advertiser chooses, they can include a ?Follow? call to action and allow users to follow their brands or businesses on the social network.

Note, if it wasn?t for Apple implementing a single sign-on for Twitter, the process would be troublesome for the user. Without this feature, users would be required to authorise their accounts using Twitters oAuth, adding friction to the process.?More friction equals less conversions.

The same goes for Reminders. Advertisers were already able to bundle calendar events, send emails, place calls, take screenshots, set wallpaper, save images and take photos. Now, Reminders can be added for a certain date and time, but also include support for a specific location.

Passbook

Perhaps the biggest addition to the list is the inclusion of Passbook support. For advertisers, this could be a very interesting development.

Often, an advertiser will choose to run a promotion, perhaps choosing a small banner ad that will run at the top or bottom of the screen and alert users to a ?Buy two cheeseburgers and get one free? offer. As it works now, the user clicks that banner, visits the retailers website, enters his/her details and then receives a coupon via email.

With Passbook, it?s a case of discovering the user?s location, pinging its database for the relevant coupon and then serving it to the user. The coupon will display the retailer?s branding, offer details and other relevant information to the user and all they have to do is hit ?Add? and it is saved to their Passbook.

If that offer isn?t time sensitive, it could reside in a user?s Passbook until they are physically passing the participating store. Passbook?s location-aware features kick in and BOOM, a notification is served, pass displayed on the user?s lockscreen and someone has the chance to redeem their ?Buy two cheeseburgers and get one free? offer when they might otherwise have forgotten about it.

Screen Shot 2012 09 27 at 08.26.02 520x394 How Apple is boosting its iAd platform with seamless Twitter and Passbook integration

A boost for iAd?

Apple?s doesn?t often comment on its iAd platform, making it hard to determine whether it is a successful division within the company.

Apple?s VP of Mobile Advertising, Andy Miller has jumped ship to VC firm Highland Capital and been replaced in an interim fashion by Apple?s VP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue. Then in January, Apple hired on a full-timer in ex-Adobe executive Todd Teresi to head it up.

In April, Apple sent out a notice to participants in its iAd program that it would give 70% (up from 60%) of the revenue earned from an ad displayed in an app to the developer. The change was seen as a?continuation of Apple?s efforts to jumpstart the adoption and use of its iAd service.

On its website, Apple offers some usage statistics, many of which are of the wider iOS ecosystem, but it does note that users engage with iAd ads for an ?average of 60 seconds per visit.?

Apple prides itself on its iAd technology, highlighting that it is built into its iOS software. This enables advertisers to push app or iTunes downloads, compose SMS and email messages and have them delivered to a targeted address, deliver 3D graphical interfaces, load video and audio within an app and share content.

Facebook has already shown that if you don?t focus on mobile first, it?s a long process trying to adapt your existing products and services to work on mobile and resonate with mobile audiences. In this sense, Apple has been quietly collecting advertising data and tuning its service since it launched iAd in 2010.

With the inclusion of Passbook support, Apple has removed a number of barriers that have traditionally stopped users from interacting with mobile?advertisements. Press, add and redeem is a lot easier than having to complete a web form and then find and redeem it when it hits your email.

Apple put a lot of effort into making its Passbook feature operate silently, it?s not an app that requires direct interaction. Instead, it waits and captures any supported coupons or tickets and throws out reminders, based not only on time but also location.

Reminding users they have a ticket or coupon is half the battle, advertisers will surely be interested in pursuing campaigns a platform that will deliver dates, times, locations, offers and lots of other information with little or no interaction on their part.

Google obeys Brazilian order, blocks video

15 hrs.

RIO?DE JANEIRO???The Brazilian unit of Google, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, said on Thursday it had obeyed a court order to remove a video attacking a candidate in Brazilian municipal elections from its YouTube service after legal appeals were exhausted.

"We are profoundly disappointed to not have the opportunity of openly debating our arguments in the electoral justice system that the videos were legitimate manifestations of the freedom of expression and should continue (to be) available in Brazil," said Fabio Coelho, director-general of Google in Brazil in an e-mailed statement.

The legal challenges underscore broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, including an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

An arrest warrant was issued for Coelho earlier this week by a court in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state after Google failed to obey an order demanding removal of the video attacking a mayoral candidate.

Judges in Brazil have held executives responsible for resisting the removal of online videos in violation of a stringent 1965 Electoral Code. The law bans campaign ads that "offend the dignity or decorum" of a candidate.

Google, which says it complies with local law but fights "diligently" to protect free speech, complied with the judge's order after it ran out of appeal chances, Coelho said.

On Wednesday, Coelho was questioned by Federal Police officers over the failure to remove the video and was later released.

"Despite this, we will continue with our global campaign for liberty of expression, not just because it is a prerequisite for a free society but also because more information generally means more schools, more power, more economic opportunities and more liberty for people," he said.

'Intimidation effect'

The person or persons who posted the offending videos "ironically" removed them on their own accord and closed their YouTube account, Coelho said.

"This is just one example of the intimidation effect of such an episode for freedom of speech," he added.

Earlier this month, an electoral court in Brazil's Paraiba ordered the arrest of another senior Google executive, Edmundo Luiz Pinto Balthazar, after the company refused to take down a YouTube video mocking a mayoral candidate there.

The video clip loaded by the user "Paraiba Humor" seized on a verbal slip by a candidate in a montage remarking, "What an idiot???give him an F!"

Within days, another judge overturned the order to arrest Balthazar, writing that "Google is not the intellectual author of the video, it did not post the file and for that reason it cannot be punished for its propagation."

Broader debate

Brazil also entered a broader international debate this week about an inflammatory YouTube video depicting the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, fool and child abuser, when a state court in Sao Paulo ordered Google to take down the video.

World leaders have decried the video, which set off a string of violent protests in the Muslim world, including attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt, Libya and Yemen. Several Muslim leaders called for international action to outlaw acts of blasphemy.

When President Barack Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, he repeated his condemnations of the video as "crude and disgusting" but defended the importance of free speech in the United States and throughout the world.

Ruling on a lawsuit by Brazil's National Islamic Union, Sao Paulo Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda gave Google 10 days to remove the video. In his decision, Miranda said he weighed freedom of expression against the need to protect against action that might incite religious discrimination.

(AP) ? Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins is convinced the company's BlackBerry phone is poised to regain its stature as a trailblazing device even as many investors fret about its potential demise.

Heins took the stage Tuesday at a conference for mobile applications developers to rally support for the upcoming release of BlackBerry 10, a new operating system that Research In Motion Ltd. is touting as its salvation after years of blundering.

The gathering in San Jose, Calif., served as the equivalent of a revival meeting for RIM. The Canadian company has been laying off thousands of workers to offset growing losses after being outmaneuvered by iPhone maker Apple Inc. and other phone makers relying on Google Inc.'s Android software.

"We recognize the need for change," said Heins, who was promoted to CEO in January as RIM's troubles deepened. "There is a new energy and a lot of fighting spirit at RIM."

Heins and other top RIM executives used the conference to provide a glimpse at some of BlackBerry 10's new features. The redesigned software won't hit the market until a still-unscheduled date early next year.

That means RIM's new software won't be available during the holiday shopping season, costing the company more sales during a period when millions of people are expected to be snapping up the latest iPhone, Android device and even a new handset from another struggling mobile phone company, Nokia, that is tying its fate to Microsoft's latest Windows software.

Despite RIM's missteps, the BlackBerry still commands a huge following with about 80 million subscribers, thanks mostly to its appeal to corporate customers who like the device's security and compatibility with their email systems.

Heins did his best to argue that the BlackBerry 10 will be worth the wait.

"We are committed to making BlackBerry 10 an inflection point in mobile computing," Heins said.

The system is being designed to make it easier to find and use multiple applications simultaneously by swiping a finger across the phone's display screen instead of having to press on a home button to navigate through a menu of programs, like the iPhone requires. All notifications from various applications are supposed to be sent a central point known as the BlackBerry Hub.

In an attempt to cater to its main customer base of business users, RIM also promises BlackBerry 10 will offer more security features, better calendar management features and more tools to connect with other workers.

RIM is retooling the software to adapt to the growing number of people who want a smartphone that can fulfill both their personal and professional needs. In an effort to make its phones better suited for employees who want to use their personal phones for work instead of relying on employer-issued devices, the new system includes a feature called "BlackBerry Balance." That enables users to touch an icon on the screen to toggle between two different menus of applications and services, one set up for personal stuff and the other programmed for work.

"We are convinced this platform will shape the next 10 years as profoundly and as positively as BlackBerry shaped the last decade," Heins said.

Investors appeared to be heartened by what they heard and saw from RIM Tuesday. The company's stock gained 32 cents, or 5 percent, to $6.62 in Tuesday's afternoon trading. That's still far below the stock's peak price of about $148, reached in June 2008. The iPhone was seen then more as a technology toy for affluent geeks and the first wave of Android-powered devices had not yet been released.

Fitbit Zip

Fitness trackers, like the people they're meant for, come in plenty of shapes and sizes. The latest addition to this category of wearable devices that act essentially like pedometers, only smarter, is the petite Fitbit Zip.?Our Editors' Choice for fitness gadgets is the outstanding Fitbit Ultra, a sleek and compact device that provides a wealth of easy-to-understand information about your health. However, the company will soon retire the product and replacing it with two new options: the soon-to-be released Fitbit One, which is very similar to the Ultra except with modified look, and the tinier, lower-cost Fitbit Zip.

At $59.95 (direct), Fitbit Zip caters most to price-sensitive folks. No other good-quality fitness gadget I've seen comes in under $99, from the bracelet shaped Nike+ FuelBand ($149) to the boxy MP3-playing? Motorola MotoActv ($249.99) . If cost is your primary concern in choosing a fitness tracker, Fitbit Zip may be an ideal option.

However, given the mere $30 price difference between Zip and the new Fitbit One, I'd rather pony up for the latter. Fitbit Zip does an admirable job of counting steps taken and miles walked or run, but it lacks a few features that I think are worth the extra money. While I have not yet formally tested Fitbit One, I can safely say based on experience with Fitbit Ultra (and word from the company that functionality will be nearly identical) that the altimeter and sleep data you get with the more expensive gadget are extremely cool. Plus, Fitbit One, which I got some hands-on time with pre-release, has an even more attractive design than Ultra. The Zip, in comparison, looks a little cheap.

Design
When I say Fitbit Zip is tiny, I mean I've eaten pieces of candy bigger than this thing. It's 0.2 by 1.2 by 1.8 inches and weighs 0.3 ounces. Also included in the package are a color-coordinated rubbery case with clip, so that you can secure Fitbit Zip to your clothes, and a USB plug-in device that enables wireless syncing to your Fitbit account (more on that in the Set Up section).

This wireless activity tracker comes in five colors?white, black, lime, magenta, and blue. To me, the white and black look more sophisticated than the other sporty colors, so I opted for a white test unit.

In the center of the plastic body, a simple dot matrix display shows the time, how many steps you've walked (on a midnight-to-midnight cycle), total distance in miles, calories burned, and a happy face to reward you for staying fit. Compared with the slick Fitbit One, the Zip?s gray display looks downright schlocky.

Fitbit Zip has no buttons to press, instead relying on a simple tap to cycle through the information. The display goes to sleep when you?re not active to conserve battery power.

Set Up
Unlike most other fitness tracking devices that need to be connected by a cable to your computer and recharged every so often, Fitbit Zip is entirely wireless and runs on a watch battery, which you can replace when it dies, but should last several months.
Out of the box, you plug in the USB syncing connector into your computer, which initiates a download of the Fitbit software. You'll also see prompts to log into your Fitbit account, or create a new one if you need.

The Fitbit Web account is really the heart of the program, and it works with a number of other apps, such as Lose It! and MapMyRun, as well as physical devices for health and fitness, including the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale, which automatically logs your weigh-ins to the account to track your weight effortlessly.

For all the Fitbit components to work properly, you do need to enter into the Web account your height, weight, age, and sex. All that information stays private.

With a Fitbit account set up, you can clip Fitbit Zip to your clothes or tuck it in your pocket, and go about your normal day. When you're in range of your computer with the USB stick, all your data will wirelessly upload to your Fitbit account.

Web Account Features
Fitbit Zip will keep track of the ground you cover every day, but it won't count stairs or hills that you climb any differently, as the Fitbit Ultra and One do (climbing stairs burns about four times as many calories as walking on flat surface). All this activity is uploaded to your account, where you can view intuitive graphs of your progress.

You can set up goals, like losing weight or simply taking more steps in a day, and Fitbit will keep an eye on your progress.

The Web account is comprehensive. You can manage your calorie intake by logging foods and drinks you consume, and also entering special activities in addition to walking to ensure you get credit for burning more calories. For example, if you swam three-quarters of a mile in 35 minutes while not wearing the Fitbit Zip?which is water- and sweat-resistant, but can't be worn in a pool?the Web account will computer how many additional calories you burned. Fitbit Zip only tracks walking, jogging, and running, but that's true of nearly every fitness tracker I've seen.

A journal section also appears in your account for keeping notes, as well as areas for monitoring sleep, blood pressure, and glucose if you have the appropriate devices or want to manually enter information.

The Fitbit Ultra and its successor the Fitbit One include automatic sleep tracking data, which I really enjoy seeing, but this capability didn't make it into the lower-cost Fitbit Zip.?

Should You Zip?
Miniscule, yet effective, Fitbit Zip certainly does meet the needs of anyone looking for a good quality fitness tracker at an affordable price. But seeing as you only have to shell out an extra $30 for the upcoming Fitbit One, which will replace Fitbit Ultra (our Editors' Choice), the added cost seems worth it. Fitbit Zip doesn't look as sharp as the Fitbit One, nor does it track your sleep or give you credit for additional calories burned when you climb stairs. And with any of the Fitbit devices, you get the same great Web account for free. The Fitbit Zip might make sense if you're unsure of your commitment to using a fitness tracker in the first place, but for everyone else, I recommend spending just a little more for the Fitbit One.?

Major Depressive Disorder: Reasons Behind Mood Disorders

To first begin to look at the reasons behind mood disorders, let us first see its definition, "a disturbance in the person's mood is hypothesized to be the main underlying feature." Two examples include major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, which can be the result of drug or alcohol abuse.

Mood disorders that are a result of substance abuse can directly be traced back to a psychoactive drug. Examples of this are: amphetamines, metamphetamines, and cocaine. From there the chemical can cause a chemical imbalance that may cause the user to have delusions and extreme paranoia.

Major depressive disorder patients are typically a higher risk for suicide, however, with the treatment of a trained health professional, these tendencies are dramatically reduced. Also included under major depressive disorder are: melancholic depression which is a loss of pleasure, psychotic major depression in which case the sufferer has delusions or hallucinations, catatonic depression which is rare and a severe form of major depression.

Bipolar disorder used to be manic depression and has alternating periods of feeling manic and being depressed. There are three types of bipolar disorder: bipolar I which is one or more manic episodes with or without depression, bipolar II which is recurrent hypomania and depressive episodes, and cyclothymia which is hypomanic and dysthumic episodes.

Now that we have reviewed the major mood disorders, let us look at the reasons behind mood disorders. These reasons can be as simple as genetic factors. Some mood disorders can be passed down and it does not necessarily have to be from the parent as it can skip generations. Also, neurotransmitters can be the reason behind a mood disorder. It can also be from a chemical imbalance.

Belarus says election turnout strong, despite opposition boycott

MINSK (Reuters) - Authorities in Belarus said they had a strong turnout in a parliamentary election on Sunday after hardline President Alexander Lukashenko denounced opposition leaders as "cowards" for urging people to boycott it as a sham exercise.

The two main opposition parties had called on people to go mushrooming or fishing and abstain from voting in an election which they said would produce a token parliament to rubber-stamp directives by Lukashenko.

"Elections took place in the course of which 109 deputies were elected ...," Lidiya Yermoshina, head of the central election committee, told a news conference early on Monday.

She said turnout had been strong at 74.3 per cent, but made no comment on whether the boycott call by the opposition had had any effect.

Asked whether any opposition candidates had been elected, she replied: "It seems doubtful to me".

The call for voters to shun the election prompted a sneering rebuke from Lukashenko, a populist who has run the former Soviet republic of 9.5 million with an iron fist since 1994 and has stifled any opposition to his rule.

"They are cowards who have nothing to say to the people," he told journalists on Sunday after voting in Minsk.

In the one seat which had not been decided, an opposition candidate failed to secure more than half the votes and a second round of voting would be held, Yermoshina said.

The opposition United Civic Party and the Belarussian People's Front called for the boycott in protest at the continued detention of political prisoners and election fraud.

But voting by students, armed service staff and police produced a 26 percent turnout in early voting and there was never any doubt that the ballot would be declared valid.

The 110-seat parliament is made up mainly of independent candidates, few of whom are fielded by political parties, and its deputies rarely initiate any legislation of their own.

The outcome could enable Lukashenko to present the election as a genuine democratic exercise. Western monitoring agencies have not judged an election in Belarus free and fair since 1995.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe sent in 330 observers for the election and will give its verdict on Monday.

Defending his 18-year rule and intolerance of dissent, Lukashenko, a former Soviet state farm boss who was once described by the U.S. administration of George W. Bush as Europe's last dictator, said on Sunday: "We don't need revolutions and shake-ups."

"If this time round there is doubt cast on the choice of the Belarussian people then I don't know what standards will be good enough in future elections," said Lukashenko.

Asked about possible Western recognition for the vote, he said: "We don't hold elections for the West. The main architect is the Belarussian people."

Lukashenko's relations with the United States and the European Union, which were never good, nose-dived when he cracked down on street protests against his re-election in December 2010.

Scores of his opponents were arrested. Many now either lie low after periods in jail or have fled the country.

ARRESTS, DETENTIONS

Human rights bodies say the run-up to the poll was marked by arrests and detention of opposition activists.

State-run television and radio made no mention of the boycott call. Opposition groups were prevented from holding street protests or giving out leaflets to support their action and some opposition figures were prevented from registering as candidates for technical reasons.

"These are all banned," said Anatoly Lebedko, head of the United Civic Party, gesturing to a pile of leaflets on his desk, which called on people to take their families to the park, go fishing or stroll in the woods rather than vote.

Lebedko's party posted a video on YouTube featuring activists gathering mushrooms, playing chess and reading books in a park - all as alternatives to going to polling stations.

Anatoly, a 50-year-old computer programmer who cast his vote at a central polling station, said: "I am hoping for new deputies in parliament who suit me better in their work." Referring to the opposition boycott, he said: "I don't condemn them. In their situation, they considered this the right thing to do."

Yuri, a teacher of about the same age, was more severe in his comments about the opposition. "The country does not need these people. I consider it normal for a person to take part in the public life of our country," he said.

Here's our guide to today's polls and why they matter. </em> </p> <p><b><small>RELATED: </small></b> </p> <p><strong>Findings: </strong>Two polls give Obama a lead in North Carolina. Purple Strategies puts Obama ahead by 48 percent to Romney's 46 percent. High Point University/ Fox 8 showed Obama's ahead 48 percent to Romney's 44 percent. <strong>Pollster: </strong> , <strong>Methodology: </strong>For Purple: Automated and online poll of 600 likely voters in North Carolina with a <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348263384_6">margin of error</span> of +/-4 <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348263384_7">percentage points</span>. For HPU/Fox 8: Telephone poll with 448 <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348263384_5">registered voters</span> September 8 through 15 with a margin of error of +/-4.7 percent. <strong>Why it matters: </strong>North Carolina "was the second-closest state" in 2008 according to <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348263384_4">Nate Silver</span>, and in this state. In fact, it's the only swing state where Romney's consistently polled ahead of Obama. That said, in : "North Carolina just isn't that important to the electoral math" because other states are more likely to be the tipping point that swings the election one way or the other. <strong>Caveat: </strong>The Real Clear Politics average still has . Plus, these polls are looking at different samples ? likely and registered voters. </p> <p><b><small>RELATED: </small></b> </p> <hr/><p><strong>Findings: </strong>People are more likely to think <em>the country</em> is better off than it was four years ago than they are to think they're?<em>personally</em>?better off. When asked if <em>they</em> are better off, 34 percent of likely voters say they're worse off, 31 percent say they're better off, and 34 percent say they're the same. However, when asked if the country is better off because Obama won, 48 percent say yes and 41 percent say no. <strong>Pollster: </strong> conducted by <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348263384_8">FTI Communications</span>. <strong>Methodology: </strong>Telephone poll of 1,055 likely voters September 15 through 19 with a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points. <strong>Why it matters: </strong>At the <em>Washington Post</em>'s?Ezra Klein today explains that this is ? Klein writes: "The conventional wisdom: Voters don't do counterfactuals. 'It could have been worse' is a losing message. That's been the Romney campaign's theory of the case, certainly, and many in the media have bought it. But perhaps we're not giving voters enough credit." By essentially asking if Obama did a good enough job, we find that voters say yes. <strong>Caveat: </strong>It's all a matter of semantics isn't it? </p> <p><b><small>RELATED: </small></b> </p> <hr/><p><strong>Findings: </strong><em>National Journal </em>finds Obama up by 7 points among likely voters, while two tracking poll paint a different picture. Gallup shows a tie; Rasmussen shows Obama up by one. <strong>Pollster: </strong> conducted by FTI Communications, , <strong>Methodology: </strong>For Allstate: See above. For Gallup: Seven-day rolling average of telephone interviews with 3,050 registered voters with a margin of error of +/-2 percentage points. For Rasmussen: Three day rolling average of 500 likely voters per night with a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points. <strong>Why it matters: </strong>These three surveys reflect the . The tracking polls are the only ones showing a close race, and?<em>The New Republic</em>'s?Nate Cohn?frames it as There are a number of reasons why Rasmussen might be showing a close race, Cohn writes. As for Gallup, it's less clear --"A similar situation unfolded in early August and ultimately the other polls moved into line with Gallup, not the other way around... Gallup is a credible strike against the view that Obama's bounce is persisting, but they look more like an outlier than a leading indicator of a tightening race." <i>The New York Times</i>'s Nate Silver? ?that Gallup is the "most powerful argument that Mr. Obama?s convention bounce is fading."?On the other hand, Silver explains that last week Obama looked stronger in national polls than state ones, but this week, that's reversed. "That might lend credibility to the hypothesis that the some of the national trackers initially exaggerated the extent of Mr. Obama?s bounce ? but also, that the Gallup poll now exaggerates his decline."?Ronald Brownstein explains that?<em>National Journal</em>'s?poll has been in line with "most other national surveys," and he adds that the best news for Republicans is that Obama has not been able to get his support above 50 percent.? <strong>Caveat: </strong>These polls vary widely in methodology and samples, plus Rasmussen has a Republican lean. </p><p>Source: <a class="first">GENEVA (Reuters) - A leading <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348090505_2">Islamic organization</span> signaled on Wednesday that it will revive long-standing attempts to make insults against religions an international criminal offence.</p> <p> The bid follows uproar across the Muslim world over a crude Internet video clip filmed in the United States and cartoons in a French satirical magazine that lampoon the Prophet Mohammad.</p> <p> But it appears unlikely to win acceptance from <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348090505_6">Western countries</span> determined to resist restrictions on <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348090505_5">freedom of speech</span> and already concerned about the repressive effect of blasphemy laws in Muslim countries such as <span Western arguments against a universal <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348090505_1">blasphemy law</span> that the OIC has sought for over a decade.</p> <p> He said the "deliberate, motivated and has 57 members and is based in Saudi Arabia, said "growing intolerance towards Muslims" had to be checked and called for "an international code of conduct for media and social media to disallow the dissemination of incitement material".</p> <p> Western countries have long argued that such measures would run counter to the U.N.'s core human rights declaration on freedom of expression and could even open the door to curbs on academic research.</p> <p> As if to underline the point, a conference in Geneva of the World Council of Churches (WCC), which groups the world's major Protestant, Orthodox and Evangelical churches, urged Pakistan to abolish its blasphemy law, which carries a possible death penalty.</p> <p> Critics say the law is widely misused to persecute non-Muslims, and cite this month's case of a Muslim cleric detained on suspicion of planting evidence suggesting that a 14-year-old girl had burned Islamic religious texts.</p> <p> Pakistani Christians and Hindus at the WCC gathering said a global law against blasphemy, or "defamation of religion", would only endorse on an international scale the religious intolerance seen in Pakistan and in other <span The censorship, secret police spying and harassment of political opponents under authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko remind Poles of what Lech Walesa's Solidarity movement endured in the 1980s. Today's Polish government is led by many former Solidarity activists, and they want to give Belarusians the same kind of Western help that proved crucial in toppling their former Soviet-backed regime.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"It's emotional. It's a Polish thing to be anti-regime," said Tomasz Pisula, a Pole who heads Freedom and Democracy Foundation, a Warsaw-based group working for democratic change in Belarus.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Other countries are also engaged in the cause, including the United States and Sweden. But perhaps nowhere is there as much support, both at the grassroots and government level, for the Belarusian democracy movement as in Poland.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The solidarity also stems from a cultural kinship and frequent contacts shared by the two Slavic peoples. A complex history of shifting borders in Eastern Europe has left a sizeable ethnic Polish minority in Belarus today that faces harassment, to the great concern of Poland.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">More broadly, Poland wants to see the entire region on its eastern border evolve into a space of stable and prosperous democracies, and has been trying for years to push for democratic change in Ukraine and Georgia. That would have implications on issues ranging from fighting the flow of illegal drugs to boosting trade. And while Polish leaders don't like to state it publicly, they would also like to see a weakening of Moscow's influence in the region, with memories of past Russian domination still vivid.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The Polish efforts for Belarus are many.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The government funds a TV station, Belsat, and a radio station, Radio Racja, which broadcast independent news from Poland into Belarus, giving people an alternative to pro-regime state media. It has opened its universities to hundreds of Belarusians who lost their right to study at home for political reasons. It funds several projects aimed at blunting the effects of repression, including Pisula's, which helps political prisoners and keeps records on the perpetrators of repression ? judges, police and others ? should a day of reckoning come.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Starastsina, the Belarusian TV journalist who flushed her memory card down the toilet, works for Belsat. Last month, she and a cameraman were stopped by secret security, still known as the KGB, as they were reporting in the eastern Belarusian city of Vitebsk. In such cases Belsat reporters usually try to throw their memory cards under a tree or a bush, where they can be retrieved later.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">But there was no vegetation in the square where they were detained, and Starastsina still had the incriminating evidence when taken to the police station</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"I felt helpless," Starastsina told The Associated Press from her newsroom in Warsaw. "They could accuse me of anything and put me under arrest."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The Sunday nationwide elections are bound to elect what is essentially a rubber-stamp parliament, with most power in Lukashenko's hands. Belsat was using its campaign footage to help expose the nation's sham democracy.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Belsat works by engaging dozens of reporters who risk arrest and harassment to gather news. They file it over the Internet to Warsaw from improvised newsrooms in clandestine apartments across Belarus. From Warsaw the news gets broadcast from a studio belonging to Polish state TV back into Belarus by satellite. Another act of defiance is the station's use of the Belarusian language rather than Russian. That is part of a conscious attempt to revive a language and cultural heritage weakened by decades of domination of Russian, which remains the language of choice of most state media.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Poland also has helped a number of Belarusian-run human rights organizations and media sites to set up their activities in Poland, granting political asylum to their activists and helping them financially. Altogether, the various projects have made Warsaw a key center for Belarusian dissidents and intellectuals in exile.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Officially, Poland's aim is not to topple Lukashenko, but to give Belarusians uncensored information and the support they would need should they ever choose to rise up themselves against the regime.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"We look at Belarus realistically. We understand that change won't happen from one day to the next because change, first of all, must take place in the consciousness of Belarusians," said Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz, Poland's undersecretary of state for Eastern affairs. "Our role is to support that attitude and to have a role in shaping it."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Many of the Polish projects pushing democracy in Belarus are led by former members of Solidarity or their children. Belsat's founder and director, Agnieszka Romaszewska, comes from a family that was prominent in Solidarity. She launched Belsat in 2007, hoping to give Belarusians the kind of independent news that Radio Free Europe provided to her parents.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">She said she is often asked why five years of Belsat broadcasts still haven't brought about Lukashenko's fall, and she always answers ? that is not the station's job.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"Lukashenko needs to be toppled by his own nation, if it wants to do it," she said. She argued that all Belsat can do is offer an independent perspective missing in the state media, including news but also documentaries about Belarusian history and culture.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"State television opens with Lukashenko and closes with Lukashenko. Twenty minutes of the news is that he went there, visited this man, was at a factory, gave advice to swine breeders on how to best breed pigs," Romaszewska said. "I don't think that many people in the West are able to picture that."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Belarusian activists in Warsaw voice gratitude for the help. Many say that if they were to return to Belarus they would be imprisoned, so being able to live and work freely in Poland allows them to keep up the struggle for democratic change back home.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"There are people in Poland who remember their history and who have a kind of spiritual mission for promoting freedom.
