Mobile gaming startup Kiwi raises $9M from Sequoia | VentureBeat

Android mobile game developer Kiwi has raised $9 million from Sequoia Capital.

All of Kiwi?s games are on Google Play?s Top 100 grossing list and are highly rated in the Google Play store.

Founders Omar Siddiqui and Shvetank Jain previously founded Trippert Labs, a social game development company that Playdom acquired in 2009. Playdom was then acquired by Disney for $763 million in 2010.?Siddiqui and Jain were the forces behind Playdom hits Gardens of Time and City of Wonder. They went on to found Kiwi in 2011. The company now offers six ?character-driven? games ? Monsterama Park, Monsterama Planet, Brightwood Adventures, Hidden Object, Enemy Lines, and Shipwrecked. Some games, like Monster Park, are about building simulated worlds, while Shipwrecked is an adventure game, and Enemy Lines focuses on forming battle strategies.

Mobile gaming is a highly competitive market, and companies are still figuring out how to make money off it. Market researcher Interpret recently published a report?that?found that the average smartphone and tablet gamer spends 92 cents a month on full game apps and 79 cents a month on mobile in-game items. That is mere pennies. Mobile games are struggle to convert people into paying players.

?The mobile-game market may be a pretty big cookie jar,? said Interpret analyst Jason Coston to VentureBeat. ?But the neck is rather narrow,?the cookies are small, and there are a lot of hands trying to reach into the jar.?

Kiwi is an example of a company that has successfully monetized mobile gaming, which is what piqued Sequoia?s interest. Partner Alfred Lin said that the company is ?taking a fundamentally different approach to building more than just another mobile gaming company.? AdMob founder Omar Hamoui also contributed, along with Guitar Hero co-creator Charles Huang.?Sequoia previously invested in Kiwi back in 2011, when the company raised between $5 million to $7 million.

Sequoia has made other investments in mobile gaming. The firm led a $19 million round of funding for mobile app discovery and monetization platform Chartboost and a $6 million round for MindSnacks, which develops educational games for iOS.?

Kiwi is based in Palo Alto with an office in Bangalore, India. It has 160 employees.

Writing Sample 1 | Stacey Deveca

In my last post I opened up about my issues that prevent me from being my complete authentic self all of the time. I wrote a paragraph about how I cut corners from living my truth and how I fear being judged and rejected. Well, apparently the Universe read my post and decided to give me a heads up, because, ironically, I received two weekly?newsletters?that I sign up for covering the topic of living authentically, despite the opinions of others. The first was an email from The Wellness Warrior. In this email, Jessica Ainscough wrote about how she was tempted to curtail a blog post she was working on so that it wouldn?t spark controversy, as she has strong opinions on the topic she was presenting. However, she realized that if she did this, she would be selling herself, and her blog, short, as she has made it part of her mission to be as authentic and honest as possible. If she were to focus on making her blog post diplomatic and bi partisan,?she would be excluding her personality and the quality that makes her unique from other wellness bloggers, from that post. Here is what she had to say about this in her weekly newsletter:

?This week, I was also a special guest at an event called ?Soulpreneurs?, and I was asked to speak about how I?ve built my business based purely on authenticity??I told the audience about how I?ve been rewarded with so much abundance in direct proportion to the amount I?ve unapologetically been myself.

So, if you experience criticism in your life, I want you to remember this:

Don?t attach to it. It means that you?re making a difference ? if you?re not receiving criticism, it means you?re not being authentic. It doesn?t matter what we have to say ? there will always be vocal people who don?t agree. Every single person who has made a difference in this world has faced opposition for it. Always speak your truth ? even if your voice shakes.?

As if this beautiful message weren?t enough, I then realized that the weekly newsletter from The Simply Luxurious Life had made its way into my inbox, and I proceeded to digest it. About ten seconds into reading it, I had already realized the synchronicity. In this newsletter, Shannon Ables wrote about how mentors and role models are amazing sources of inspiration and guidance, but at the same time, we need to make sure that we choose our own path and seek the things that are important and relevant to us. Society will often give us rules and boundaries to influence how we go about our lives and this may be totally fine for some, but for others, this?conditioning?may not allow them to live their life to its fullest potential. She emphasized finding the courage to break away from taking the path most traveled and, instead, finding a route that will make us feel totally alive. To dare to be and honor who we are, even when we meet resistance and?nonacceptance.

Here are several excerpts from her newsletter:

?Role models are meant to inspire us and show us what?s possible. Mentors are meant to lead us and guide us. And while it is a wonderful blessing to have such people to look up to, it is important that we realize our own uniqueness?

?As Anna Quindlen alludes to in today?s quote, we?should not?try to be exactly as everyone thinks we should be -?following the trail that someone else has left for us. Instead, we should follow our own path.

We can use that?trail provided by our role models and mentors?as?a starting point or as a checkpoint, but we must be brave enough to?charge out on our own, let our hair down and be ourselves ? our authentic selves.

?Ironically enough, it is easier to follow?the path that someone else suggests we travel than it is to find the courage within ourselves to simply?be our best selves. Because when we follow the ?rules? we can blame someone else if it doesn?t feel right or we can feel a?faux calm upon doing what is needed to be?accepted?

?Instead we should accept who we are individually and not apologize for finding contentment in a life that?others may not understand.?

These were the words that inspired me yesterday, and which I might be adding to the pages of my planner, because this is precisely the area that I need to work on. Being authentic is of up most importance, because with it we will accomplish what we were placed here to do. This isn?t just about becoming more confident or ridding ourselves of silly insecurities (although these are wholly important). Our ability to be ourselves influences our ability to fulfill our life?s purpose, which doing so makes everything else in our lives much more satisfying and meaningful.

As Marie Forleo often says, ?The world needs that special something that only you have.??Those singular traits that ?single? you out and make you feel insecure and different, those are the ones that need to shine, because the only way to stand out and hold value among so much competition, is to charm the world with your?personality and unique way of expressing yourself. When you do so, you inspire others to do the same, and contrary to what most believe, you become more?likable?and attractive.

A great example, albeit a bit fashion oriented, is this: Which models, when interviewed backstage, are most memorable and seem the most personable? the ones that come across as uninterested and lacking in personality (a.k.a. ?normal?) or the ones that boldly talk about topics that interest them and say it like it is (a.k.a. authentic)?

To conclude, here is the quote by Anna Quindlen that Shannon included in her newsletter:

?Nothing important, or meaningful, or beautiful, or interesting, or great ever came out of imitations. The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.?

-Anna Quindlen

Food For The Week: What Families Across The Globe Are Bringing ...

Faith D?Aluisio and Peter Menzel have successful careers documenting diet, economic and environmental habits of the World. They have a knack for juxtaposing stories to help individuals understand their habits in comparison to those of other time zones and means.

The pair have co-created several books and I think each project is successful because of their teamwork in the field. Peter, a photographer well known for his coverage of ?science and technology, and Faith, a former TV news producer and ?talented writer, are a husband and wife power team.

In 2008, they put together a photo album of families from 21 countries. Each portrait is full color and beautifully presents one family with their weekly food supplies. With each image the authors noted the expenditures, the family?s favorite foods, brand names and facts about the country.

D?Aluisio and Menzel have discussed the impact of their work and how they hope it adds to the discussion of nutrition education:

It?s interesting to watch children with this book in their hands. It doesn?t require being read from front to back and they don?t approach it in that manner anyway; they?re drawn in by the food portraits and begin immediately to compare themselves to what they see. Afterward they go back to fill in information.?What the World Eats?is meant to get kids thinking about the world around them, but also about the food on their own plates. The U.S. Center for Disease Control reports that one in every three children born in the year 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes at some point during their life, and that more than 60 percent of American adults, and 30 percent of children are overweight or obese. This in one of the richest, most powerful countries on the planet; we are eating ourselves to death, but we can do something about it if we understand the problems. This book aids that understanding.?

An interview with the two of them can be found here:?http://www.sharecare.com/healthmakers/Peter-Menzel-and-Faith-D-Aluisio

Food is a powerful topic. It?s no surprise that the dietary habits of people help explain socioeconomic factors of a region. A simple viewing of contents at a ?dinner table? sheds light on lifestyle, salary, climate and health conditions. This album is a testament to that. Your jaw will drop at how some of these purchases add up. Your jaw may also drop at what is being purchased. Some scenes are humbling and some are appalling. Some choices you may expect and some of the brands that appear may greatly surprise you. ?See for yourself in this selection from the book:

Priest accuses Scottish Catholic church of cover-up in latest sex scandal

Another priest has revealed details of sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church, claiming he?s being punished for coming forward.

A priest who is being called Father Michael, as he wishes to remain anonymous, claims he is being kicked out of the church for reporting Father Paul Moore to the police in 1997 for sexual assault.

The church has no comment ?due to the complex legal situation, criminal, civil and canonical?.

?I woke to find Moore fondling me under the bedclothes,? said Father Michael.

?I placed a chair behind the door and would sometimes hear it rattling,? he added.

Father Michael said he sought help on two separate occasions from Cardinal Kieth O?Brien, Britain?s former most senior Roman Catholic cleric who resigned in March over sexual misconduct.

In 1996 and in 2013 when Father Michael went to O?Brien, the former cardinal expressed ?shock? but did not offer any help.

Father Michael also went to O?Brien?s temporary replacement, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia who reportedly wrote ?I think it is better for me to return these documents to you? when Father Michael appealed for his help in 2013.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, the church has told Father Michael that he will be removed unless he resigns.?

Father Michael has received a letter in which Bishop John Cunningham of Galloway informs him he must retire because of ?your ill-health, both physical and psychological, as you yourself have detailed to me in your letters and in those sent by your medical doctors and psychotherapist.

Father Michael, who is recovering from cancer, claims Bishop Cunningham denied requests to lessen his workload while in recovery.

Though Moore reportedley confessed to inappropriate behavior, Father Michael feels he's being treated unfairly because the church is still protecting Moore while asking Father Michael to resign.

Father Michael said: ?What I have had to face is something very evil. Had I known what I would experience when I was lying on the floor at ordination, I would have stood up and walked out. I focused my life on priesthood, thinking it was about goodness, kindness and everything I wanted to aspire to. I discovered it was nothing like that.?

?It's a tragic story,? he added.

?It's about cover-up, deceit and lies.?

The church is a big mafia, and they trash you. They will do everything to destroy me.?

Detroit bankruptcy holds little hope of happy ending | Financial Post

MIAMI/NEW YORK ? Detroit officials hope the bruising bankruptcy battle ahead of them will be rewarded with the birth of a leaner, more efficient and ultimately prosperous Motown.

Detroit battle with blight may be key to survival

If you want to tackle Detroit?s thousands of abandoned homes and trash-strewn and overgrown lots, there are few better places to start than in Brightmoor in the northwestern corner of the city.

History, however, has few story book endings to offer as a guide when it comes to U.S. municipal bankruptcies.

Fact is, they are rare events ? just 61 local governments have gone through Chapter 9 bankruptcy since 1954 ? and while the process is devoted to restructuring debt and provides temporary cash flow relief, it does not help a city enhance its revenue or economic outlook. Furthermore, cities typically lose access to capital markets in the wake of a bankruptcy.

?Detroit has a very high level of debt and the bankruptcy can correct some of it, but is it going to turn around its economy quickly? That?s probably unlikely,? said Jeff Previdi, Managing Director and Co-Head of Local Government Ratings at Standard and Poor?s.

To be sure, Detroit?s financial disarray was decades in the making: a downward spiral of company departures and failures accompanied by a dramatic drop in its population, to just below 700,000 from a peak of 1.8 million, and a rise in crime.

Once the cradle of U.S. automotive industry and Motown music, Detroit appears to have run out of alternatives to bankruptcy barring a bailout from the state.

New York, Cleveland and Philadelphia previously teetered on the edge of bankruptcy but Detroit is the first major U.S. city to file for bankruptcy, pressured by US$18.5-billion of outstanding liabilities.

To this point, only much smaller local governments have gone the bankruptcy route without external help and facing similar issues.

Take for example Vallejo, California, with about 116,000 people. It spent more than three years in bankruptcy from 2008 to 2011, weighed down by generous labour contracts and retirement benefits.

The city, about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, was allowed to terminate its collective bargaining agreements, but it never renegotiated some US$128-million of unfunded pension liabilities.

And while Vallejo generated about US$34-million in savings on some of the liabilities it faced heading into bankruptcy, those have been nearly matched by expenses related to the bankruptcy itself, according to a 2012 study by Standard & Poor?s.

Now two years after emerging from Chapter 9, it has yet to balance its budget, and the police force is roughly half its previous size. Vallejo remains shut out of the municipal bond market and cannot raise money to address much needed infrastructure repairs.

?We have not done enough, and the budget we just adopted in June still has a US$5.2-million dollar deficit on an US$82-million general fund budget,? Vallejo City Manager Daniel Keen said.

Both Vallejo and nearby Stockton, which before Detroit?s filing last week had been the most populous city to file for bankruptcy, have seen further increases in crime after seeking protection from creditors. Stockton, with nearly 300,000 people, was granted permission to enter Chapter 9 protection in April and will file a debt-adjustment plan later this year.

ORANGE COUNTY: A RARE SUCCESS

The brightest post-bankruptcy story is perhaps California?s Orange County. But its 1994 bankruptcy ? the largest in history at the time ? stemmed from US$1.7-billion in bad derivative bets, not the kind of grinding economic slump and population flight that feature so prominently in the Detroit case.

Orange County, home to Disneyland and with median household income of more than US$75,000, nearly three times Detroit?s, has suffered few lingering effects from its 18 months in Chapter 9.

?Most county residents were not impacted,? said Mark Baldassare, president of the Public Policy Institute of California. ?Police services, streets and road, schools, things that people depend on local government for, went on.?

Orange County also stands out as the only bankruptcy alumnus to successfully re-enter the municipal bond market. But its recovery bonds were fully backed by bond insurer MBIA Insurance Corp, an option that may not be available in the future since the 2007-2009 financial crisis crushed the bond insurance business.

JEFFERSON COUNTY: FUTURE IS CLOUDED

And the jury is still out on Jefferson County, Alabama, which before Detroit had held the mantle as the largest municipal bankruptcy ever at US$4.2-billion that stemmed from debts to overhaul and expand its sewer system.

The county, home to Birmingham, the state?s largest city, is on track to leave bankruptcy by year?s end. By many measures, it is thriving: its jobless rate is just 5.5% compared with the U.S. rate of 7.6%; it has a diverse employer base; and private business investment is robust, totaling US$579-million in 2012, more than double a 10-year average, according to the Birmingham Business Alliance.

Nonetheless, local officials are bracing for years of stunted government services such as few emergency crews to deal with deadly tornadoes, rising utility costs, and limited public resources for boosting local commerce.

?We have no money for economic growth,? said David Carrington, president of the Jefferson County Commission and a negotiator of the county?s debt-adjustment plan filed on June 30. ?There will be on-going deterioration of infrastructure.?

Road repairs in Jefferson County, home to 660,00 people, already lag other sizeable Alabama counties, according to Carrington, who also worries federal officials will sue over the county?s below-par jails.

?Like any company, you have to grow, or you are going to die,? said Robert Brooks, finance professor at the University of Alabama. ?This is going to be a strain and make it unattractive for businesses to move into the Birmingham area.?

Jefferson County also hopes to follow in Orange County?s footsteps in returning to the bond market, with a US$1.9-billion debt deal planned for later this year that is central to its negotiated reorganization plan. With slim prospects for the kind of bond insurance enhancement obtained by Orange County, however, the deal is likely to saddle the county with outsized interest rates for decades.

?Clearly, with such a huge liability for such an extended length of time, it is like having a ball and chain around our ankle,? said Brooks.

In the end, though, the enduring costs of a municipal bankruptcy are tallied in more than dollars.

?The impacts of a bankruptcy on a community are pretty hard to predict but they are not very good. There is a loss of confidence ? there is a lot of anxiety in the city?s workforce,? Vallejo?s Keen said. ?We are still the city that all know for having being in bankruptcy.?

AP EXCLUSIVE: Egypt military builds case on Morsi

CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's criminal investigation against the ousted president, announced Friday, is likely just the start of wider legal moves against Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood - ominous prospects for a country seething with violent divisions.

During Morsi's three weeks in secret detention, military intelligence agents have extensively questioned him on the inner workings of his presidency and of the Brotherhood, seeking to prove he committed crimes including handing state secrets to the Islamist group, military officials told The Associated Press.

Military intelligence has had sole access to him and has questioned him at least once a day, sometimes for up to five hours, the officials said. At times they have presented him voice recordings of his conversations to question him on them, they said.

Throughout, Morsi has been denied access to television and newspapers, they said. He has been moved at least three times between Defense Ministry facilities in armored vehicles under heavy guard. He is currently in a facility outside Cairo, they said, without elaborating.

The military appears not to have decided yet what to do with the information it is gathering. But the officials said it could be used to fuel the civilian prosecution already underway, indict other Brotherhood figures or to justify a more dramatic move: renewing the ban on the Muslim Brotherhood itself.

The group was banned for decades, but became legal after Mubarak's fall and was widely seen as the real power and decision-maker behind Morsi during his year in office. Morsi and the group denied it played any role.

"We allowed Hosni Mubarak to be put on trial and he is one of our own, so there is nothing to stop us from doing this," said one military official familiar with the thinking of the military leadership. Mubarak was a career air force officer touted as a war hero before he became president in 1981. After his 2011 ouster, he was put on trial for complicity in killing protesters.

Since army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi removed Morsi on July 3, Egypt's first freely elected president has been held incommunicado by the military. Six well placed military and security officials, including two in military intelligence, spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the closed-door questioning.

On Friday, civilian prosecutors announced they had launched an investigation into Morsi on charges of murder and conspiring with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. At the heart of the case are allegations that Morsi and the Brotherhood worked with Hamas to carry out an attack on a prison that broke Morsi and around 30 other members of the group out of detention during the 2011 uprising against Mubarak. The attack killed 14 inmates.

The investigation is the first step toward an indictment and possible trial on the charges, which are punishable by death. Prosecutors ordered Morsi detained for 15 days pending the completion of the investigation and security officials late Friday said he was likely to be moved shortly to a civilian, high-security prison south of Cairo.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Brotherhood and Hamas deny the charges, calling them politically motivated. Morsi and the Brotherhood figures freed with him have said local residents attacked the Wadi el-Natroun prison to free their own relatives and that they escaped amid the chaos.

The move to prosecute Morsi shows the "bankruptcy of the leaders of the bloody coup," Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref said in a statement. Egyptians, he added, will reject "the return of the dictatorial police state and all the repression, tyranny and theft it entails."

But the accounts of Morsi's interrogations suggest the military has a more ambitious aim to cripple the 85-year-old Brotherhood.

A move to ban the group again would likely bring a backlash from Islamists.

One senior Brotherhood official, Mohammed el-Beltagy, sought to belittle the significance of such a move.

"They can dissolve it if they want. They are dissolving the whole country now," he told the AP at the site of the group's main protest sit-in at an eastern Cairo district.

Another Brotherhood figure told AP that the group is fully aware that a new ban "cannot be ruled out." But he warned that the result would be "a tragic phase" that would "end with el-Sissi's fall." He spoke on condition of anonymity because the group had not authorized him to discuss the implications of a ban.

The Brotherhood has contended that the military is aiming to crush the Islamist movement after the military coup, which the group and its allies say aims to destroy Egyptian democracy. El-Sissi removed Morsi after four days of massive protests against him by millions of Egyptians.

The military's lines of questioning appear aimed at proving the secretive Brotherhood went far beyond its legal status as a non-government organization involved solely in religious work and put itself above the law.

Military intelligence agents have interrogated Morsi extensively on his actions as president, the officials said. Among the topics are his discussions with foreign leaders during his trips abroad and his ties with Turkey and top Brotherhood ally Qatar, and with Gaza's Hamas rulers, the officials said.

One main avenue is to determine if he gave sensitive state information to Islamist allies abroad or to the Brotherhood, they said.

Another line of questioning focuses on the deeply secretive finances of the Brotherhood and its funding channels abroad, they said.

As a sign of how enmeshed the Brotherhood was with the president, one senior military official noted an incident soon after Morsi took office on June 30, 2012. Morsi brought 19 members of the Brotherhood's top leadership body with him for his first briefing by the then-head of the General Intelligence Agency, Maj. Gen. Murad Muwafi.

When Muwafi objected to their presence because they had no security clearance, Morsi casually told him, "Come on, general, there are no strangers here." Muwafi went on to give the briefing but avoided sharing sensitive material, said the official, who was directly involved in contacts between the Morsi administration and the military and intelligence agencies.

Several weeks later, Morsi fired Muwafi.

The 61-year-old Morsi initially refused to answer investigators' questions but eventually cautiously cooperated, according to a military official with access to records of the questioning.

Throughout, however, he repeatedly declared that he remains Egypt's legitimate president, the official said. He often insisted he tirelessly served Egypt's best interests but was thwarted by the "deep state," the phrase used by Egyptians to refer to Mubarak loyalists and other entrenched powers in the army, security forces and state institutions.

Morsi is observing the dawn-to-sunset fast of the holy month of Ramadan and when not being questioned, he has spent his time praying and reading the Quran, Islam's holy book. He was making a point of praying loudly, seeking God's assistance against his "oppressors," several officials said.

When confronted with audio recordings and documents, Morsi bristled and said his investigators should treat him with the respect a president is entitled to, said the official with access to the questioning records.

At another point, Morsi sarcastically told his interrogators that he did not see the point of them asking him questions since they had video and sound recordings of everything he did while in office, the official said.

Another area that Morsi was being interrogated about is his pardon for dozens of jailed militants who once embraced violence. The officials said the military believes many of them move to Sinai and formed jihadi cells that include foreign extremists.

In the same vein, the military investigators are questioning Morsi on his perceived attempt to stop the military from pursuing militants behind the killing nearly a year ago of 16 army troops at a remote post near the Israel and Gaza borders in Sinai.

During his presidency, Morsi's aides said he was trying to move away from the approach of security crackdowns in Sinai to negotiations to ease discontent among the population there. Opponents accused him of protecting jihadis.

Besides Morsi, five other senior Brotherhood figures have been detained and face investigations by prosecutors on a variety of charges, including inciting violence. More than a dozen others have arrest warrants against them but have not been detained.

Rocker Beth Ditto is a married woman after exchanging vows with her girlfriend in Hawaii.

The Gossip frontwoman previously revealed she would be walking down the aisle with Kristin Ogata in April, but news of the nuptials have only now surfaced online.

Ditto made the announcement via her band?s Facebook.com page on Tuesday, when she shared a photo of the newlyweds at the Maui ceremony, where the couple and its guests were all dressed in white.

The singer, who walked down the aisle barefoot, exchanged vows in a dress designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, while Ogata paired a shirt and suit jacket with shorts.

The accompanying caption reads, ?At long last, now that we have returned home and recovered from all the amazingness and had some time to bask in the afterglow, we are exited to share with you a pic or two from Beth and Kristin?s wedding! So much love and appreciation to all of our family and friends who celebrated with us! And a huge thank you to Jean Paul Gaultier for the dream-come-true dress!?

Gaultier shared the same picture with his Twitter.com followers moments after Ditto?s big reveal, and sent his best wishes to his pals, writing, ?Congratulations to the newlyweds! All the best for Beth (and) Kristin! Love, JPG?.

OpenCL 2.0 provisional spec gets outlined, OpenGL 4.4 released

SIGGRAPH has only just begun, but the Khronos Group is already giving folks of the graphics programming persuasion some fresh APIs to talk about. Yesterday marked the release of the OpenCL 2.0 provisional specification, and it's boasting an Android installable client driver extension, along with improvements to image handling, shared virtual memory and more. It's expected that the new version of OpenCL will be finalized in six month's time, and feedback regarding the changes are being welcomed. The fresh OpenGL 4.4 spec revamps everything from shaders to asynchronous queries while keeping full backwards compatibility, and includes additional functions to make porting Direct3D apps a smoother process. If parallel programming and cross-platform graphics are your thing, hit the break for the full feature breakdown in the press release.

SAM_0930It?s so quiet at night. I can?t tell if my eardrums have developed a low thrum or if there is a motor embedded deep under the rock. The sound reminds me of engine vibrations from the diesel trains of my childhood when they?d park on a nearby track. The low-pitched cycling vibration is almost out of sensibility. It comes, not only through my eardrums, but through the bones of my jaw and head. It permeates my ultra-low-frequency hearing in the night but then is dashed out of awareness by the bright chuckle and gurgle of my coffee pot and the buzz and trickle of the refrigerator.

I take my pulse at my throat. It seems to timed with my heartbeat and the rush of blood up through my neck.

    It?s so very quiet here.

800px-Renault_Kangoo_frontYesterday, I helped Marie unload her Kangoo into the cave (basement). She and her husband plan to move from their four-room apartment in the hotel into the main part of this house to ?retire?. It seems that this plan and this house have been in the making for years. This summer she?s rented her ?retirement? home out to family friends.

Her daughter says her mother?s retirement and move will happen in September but Marie says ?April?. Since they?ve been talking about this retirement and move since I first met them in 2008, I have the distinct feeling that this may never happen.

Her ?retirement? house has been built with three separate residences on the top of the hill behind town. The main living area, Marie?s ?retirement? home, is in the center above us. The garage and cave (basement) is on the other side of the wall of our narrow one-bedroom apartment.

While I helped carry things, she offered to show me the other apartment on the uphill side of the house.

The other apartment (about 500 sq ft) has only the kitchen downstairs. It extends via narrow stairs to two attic bedrooms and a bathroom. One attic bedroom has a double bed plus two small beds under the low eaves behind a wooden wardrobe. The second bedroom has only a double bed. It?s door is a curtain on a rod.

Skylight windows in both bedrooms open through the slate roof. They provide fresh sea air, light and views of white boats anchored far below.

The eating table in the kitchen seats six, if you slide the table away from the wall. There?s a private patio through a back door. It overlooks her garden riot of volunteer potatoes, tomatoes and corgettes.

A daughter already cleaned the apartment and changed the sheets. The linen closet inside the front door is stacked high with hotel-pressed sheets. The eating table is cloaked with a bright yellow table cloth. With the towels she added, it?s ready for her next guests.

I carried armloads and boxes from her car into the cave while she chatted a continuous stream of rapid French. I caught themes but missed specifics. I stopped her from time to time to repeat a word or phrase. She corrected my pronunciation, then kept talking.

I?m grateful for the lesson. I have so many gaping holes in my French. The more I learn, the bigger they seem. If I only understood more French, I could have acquired her entire family history.?

There is a brother (or was it the Aunt) who lives too far away to visit. Over a thousand kilometers. This box contains flatware from when her mother had a restaurant. These maps of Africa on the backseat of the car are from many years ago when Claude and she lived there for his work. This chair is too good to throw away. Her son-in-law wanted to throw it away. But look. It only needs to be re-covered. People today throw too many good things away. Look. There?s another chair just like it right here.

She looked around at the jumble in her cave as she and I added things to shelves and piled them on the floor. Cans of paint. An enormous boom-box cassette tape player. Old clothes. The antique road maps of Africa. An empty tool box. A dozen glass lamp shades, new in boxes. The straight wooden chair in need of new upholstery.

?Some of this should go to the poubelle (trashcan),? she said. ?I need to organize.?

She shook her head. Not today. There are too many other things to do. Customers are coming. There?s an errand to run and the bar to tend.

Marie is a very busy woman. This is one of the many things I admire about her.? Besides the fact that she can work in her garden wearing heels without falling over, getting sweaty or becoming the least bit dirty.

l-hotelMarie has expanded her family-run enterprise over the years, stone by stone, tile by tile and friendly chat by friendly chat, outward from her rose granite hotel in the center of town.

Her apartments each sleep an amazing number for their size. Our one bedroom (about 500 sq ft) was set up to sleep five till we moved a bed into the garage to make room for our kid?s electric keyboard. The upstairs apartment sleeps six.

?Perfect for a family with kids,? she told me.

I smiled and nodded. I really appreciate that she thinks about families with kids.?

It was nearly impossible to rent a furnished apartment for my family of four in Denver. I had to settle for one filthy room and drug dealers as neighbors. I had to cook on two un-vented burners. I had to fight to get the cheap sheets and towels changed. I had to demand chairs and dishes and forks for four. Then, I had to go out and buy pots and pans so I could cook.

And I paid a lot more for for those Denver apartments, too.

    ATTIC BEDMarie is my hero.

She is the queen of the tidy attic bedroom, the mistress of one-more-sturdy-bed-tucked-under-the-eaves and the empress of the comfortable fold-out sofa.

Her beds are solid and her sheets are world class. Her towels are thick and white. Her rooms and apartments are spotless. The tablecloths are thick and as brightly-colored as butterflies. There are enough chairs for everyone to sit down together for meals.?

BRIGHT TABLECLOTHDishes are in themed collections that may not match perfectly, but there is enough flatware, a fistful of tiny French spoons, one oval casserole dish perfect to bake a gratin, a skillet and a thick-bottomed pot for making a stew.

Since I travel with my four good knives, my best whisk, my garlic press and favorite rubber spatula, I can cook anything I want to cook.

It?s nicer, cheaper and safer to live in France. Perhaps we should live in France.

    * * * * * * *

    Thanks for reading.

Royal baby birth on the cheap? Why US births can cost much more.

Royal baby news reports say Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is in labor in a hospital suite with a birthing pool, satellite TV, and Internet access. Similar services in the US cost more.

    By Chelsea B. Sheasley,?Correspondent / July 22, 2013

A mask depicting Britain's Duchess of Cambridge and clocks showing New York and London time, which were placed by members of the media, are seen across St. Mary's Hospital exclusive Lindo Wing in London, Sunday. Buckingham Palace officials say Prince William's wife, Kate, has been admitted to the hospital in the early stages of labor on Monday.

Is it possible that the birth of the heir to the British throne could cost less than the delivery of your everyday American Joe or Jane?

It?s not as far-fetched as one would assume. Sure, the Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Kate Middleton, is giving birth in a private wing of one of the top hospitals in London, with a suite that includes a birthing pool, satellite TV, radio, Internet access, daily newspapers, and a private catering staff.?

But the United States boasts the highest costs for childbirth in the world, according to a recent report by the New York Times and the charges for delivery have about tripled since 1996.

For women without insurance in the United States, or for the 62 percent of women in private insurance plans that lack maternity coverage, the cost of maternity care could range from $4,000 to $45,000.?

Comparatively, the cost of delivery at the duchess?s posh birthing suite, the same place where Princes William and Harry were born in the 1980s, reportedly costs up to ?10,000, or about $15,300. Of course, that doesn't include the reported pre-delivery yoga classes at Kensington Palace or visits to private birthing coaches, and the cost will increase if the duchess uses extra services during the birth, like a Caesarean section or pain-reducing drugs.?

Beyond the royal scale, average births in the US far exceeds the costs in Britain.

UK government to activate adult content filters by default

UK Government to announce mandatory online adult content filters

In a speech later today, David Cameron will announce that, by the end of this year, all new UK broadband accounts will have adult content filters activated by default. Such restrictions will only be removed if the account-holder specifically requests it. Meanwhile, around 20 million users already connected will be presented with an "unavoidable decision" concerning adult content, and public WiFi providers must advertise if they utilize filters or not. Cameron also wants to outlaw "extreme pornography," unify police forces' regional databases and request that the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center draws up a "blacklist" of search terms to prevent people from searching for outlawed images online. Legislation will be introduced towards the end of the year to codify the changes, and ISPs not considered to be doing enough will be forced into action.

a new opinion in Computer about Apple MacBook Pro (MD102B/A)

    Product Type: Apple laptops

This beautiful unibody computer is the perfect size for typing, the screen not too big or too small. The aluminium body feels incredibly well made and the display is very sharp and bright. The keyboard backlight has come in use while using the computer in the dark. I find it very difficult to write something negative about this computer as MacBook Pro's regularly last for over three years and I have an old Mac Desktop sitting on my desk that has been on this earth longer than me! If you're going to buy a new laptop, you simply can't go wrong with this computer; it comes with a huge hard-drive, 8GB of Ram and has a very fast i7 CPU; former C.E.O. Steve Jobs once said his goal was to make Apple 'a yardstick of quality' and he has certainly achieved that goal. Everything Apple touches is beautifully crafted and engineered down to the finest detail.

Summary: If you want a Mac buy this beautiful, capable machine.

Long-distance relationships can form stronger bonds than face-to-face ones

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The long-distance relationship has plagued college students and people relocated for work for ages. These relationships are seen as destined to fail, but are they actually creating stronger bonds than a geographically closer relationship? A recent article found that people in long-distance relationships often have stronger bonds from more constant, and deeper, communication than normal relationships.
