WICHITA, Kansas ? Volunteers with the non-profit Camp Quality Kansas kicked off their 7th annual summer camp in Augusta on Sunday.
The week-long camp isn?t your ordinary summer camp, it?s for kids dealing with cancer. All campers are either undergoing cancer treatments or are recently in remission.
Camper Coordinator Cathi Smith said these kids are in need of this kind of opportunity, ?A?lot of these kids they go through treatment all the time and they don?t get to have the normal childhood routine.?
Each camper is matched with an adult companion, a volunteer to be there to support and encourage them throughout the week. The camp is also staffed with oncology nurses to provide care for the campers.
