The Jacksonville Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the People?s Choice Award Winners for the Make Me Laugh Exhibit. Winners were selected by ballots cast by Hayloft Gallery visitors. Congratulations go to Ernest Bryant and Laura Byler for their winning contributions.
For this exhibit, the center offered a challenge for artists to create artwork that is humorous or whimsical. This exhibit includes a variety of media including mixed media, sculptures, paintings, drawings and photography.
The winning piece was titled ?Five Fools on a Finger,? a wood carving by Ernest Bryant. Laura Byler won second place with a knitted sock titled ?Sock for a Two Timing Heel,? and third place also went to Ernest Bryant for his gourd-made Paradoxical Bird of Paradise.
?Ernest Bryant has done it again, I believe this is the fourth People?s Choice Award he has received in the Hayloft Gallery, and for good reason; Ernest is an extremely skilled wood-worker and he often incorporates puns and humor into his work,? said Lore Deighan, gallery coordinator. ?Laura Byler?s piece, ?Sock for a Two Timing Heel? took the ordinary craft of knitting and turned it into a fabulous pun on an old-time saying, and I witnessed many a laughs when people saw this work.?
Participating artists included Malcom Black, Robin Boucher, Ernest Bryant, Laura Byler, Ron Campbell, Lore Deighan, Martha Dillard, Art Haase, Susan Icove, Fred Jones, Sidra Kaluszka, Bud Lohr, Louie Scott Lovitt, Darcy Meeker, Gayle McTighe, Jeanie O?Neill, Ann Shank, Helen Shaw, Petie
?
Stringfellow, Liz Stucki, Susan Sutterer, Ron Sutterer, John Tobin and Gerri Young.
?Humor is not always an easy subject to address in art work, and I was proud of the artists in this show for trying something new and taking a crack at a subject that many of them do not usually incorporate in their work,? said Deighan.
