The Series A Crunch Is Over. Consumer Internet Is Back, Baby!

9868v5-max-250x250Remember exactly a year ago when I said that Facebook will be fine but Zynga won't be? Turns out I was right. Remember three years ago when Naval Ravikant of AngelList and I declared that Twitter was massively undervalued? Also correct. So I'm ready to make my next bold prediction: The Series A Crunch is over.

Chinese family snaps up ?20m Fota Island Resort

Bidders for the jewel in Cork?s ?20m tourism crown came from India, Taiwan, the US, Europe, China, and Cork ? with a Chinese family, the Kangs, yesterday coming up trumps.

By Tommy Barker

The Cork harbour island estate went to tender last week, with around a half dozen international and Irish bids received by joint agents Cohalan Downing and Colliers, acting for Nama and receivers PWC.

Fota went to the altar with other Chinese suitors prior to Christmas, with a sale agreed and a match trumpeted, but it was not consummated ? so it was back to the dating game for the profitable tourism and golf product which earns ?10m a year in income and has good occupancy levels.

Maurice Cohalan, of Cohalan Downing, acting jointly with Colliers International, said the sale had generated 200 enquiries and 84 parties followed up an interest. ?We were pleasantly surprised at not only the number, but the quality and diversity of these enquiries,? said Marcus Magnier of Colliers about the competitive bids process.

Several members of the Kang family, headed by five or six siblings, who over-nighted in Fota for the contract signing yesterday, had stayed in Fota Resort several times before as regular guests. ?They fell in love with Ireland, with the greenery, the open space and the easy lifestyle,? said Conor Pyne of accountancy firm O?Connor Pyne, which acted for the Kangs.

A formal statement issued for the Chinese buyers said they were ?looking forward to working closely with the excellent team at Fota Island Resort as well as with the membership of the golf club? where there?s 27 holes, and a golf academy. The course has twice hosted the Irish Open.

Resort general manager Jonathan Woods said news of the deal ?is a great day for the resort, for Cork and region?. The complex employs up to 250 in a part and full-time basis, with about 80 permanent jobs.

The new owners want to strengthen links with Fota island?s other inhabitants, the Wildlife Park and the period Fota House itself, with Fota visitor numbers averaging 400,000 a year, as a top tourism draw.

The sale will mark the end of a period of receivership at Fota, developed by the Fleming Group at a reported cost of up to ?90m after buying it in 2004 from the Mahony family. All bookings will be honoured ?and the family will get on with further developing the hotel and finishing the remaining lodges immediately?, said Mr Pyne.

Adviser Michael Cronin, who visited the Kangs in Beijing, said a Kang family priority would be urging the Government to ease restrictions on tourist visas from China to Ireland. ?It would be very valuable to the country, as so many Chinese can?t get a visa to see how good it is here, and what opportunities there are,? he said.

Moms' high-fat, sugary diets may lead to offspring with a taste for alcohol, sensitivity to drugs

Presentation details how maternal diet affects fetal, newborn and adult rats

HONOLULU Vulnerability to alcohol and drug abuse may begin in the womb and be linked to how much fatty and sugary foods a mother eats during pregnancy, according to findings from animal lab experiments presented at APA's 121st Annual Convention.

"The majority of women in the U.S. at child-bearing age are overweight, and this is most likely due to overeating the tasty, high-fat, high-sugar foods you find everywhere in our society. The rise in prenatal and childhood obesity and the rise in number of youths abusing alcohol and drugs merits looking into all the possible roots of these growing problems," said Nicole Avena, PhD, a research neuroscientist with the University of Florida's McKnight Brain Institute.

Compared to pups of rats that ate regular rodent chow, the offspring of rats that ate high-fat or high-sugar diets while pregnant weighed more as adults and drank more alcohol, and those on high-sugar diets also had stronger responses to commonly abused drugs such as amphetamine, Avena said. Her presentation examined experiments from three studies, each lasting about three months and involving three to four adult female rats and 10 to 12 offspring in each dietary condition.

Researchers compared weight and drug-taking behavior between the offspring of rats fed diets rich in fats, sucrose or high-fructose corn syrup with the offspring of rats fed regular rodent chow during gestation or nursing. They tested both sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup because they are chemically different and could cause different outcomes, Avena said. Sucrose occurs naturally and is commonly processed from sugar cane or sugar beets into table sugar, whereas high-fructose corn syrup is synthesized from corn.

To determine effects of the mothers' diets during gestation, the offspring of rats fed the high-fat, high-sucrose or high- fructose corn syrup diets were nursed by mother rats that were eating regular chow. To determine the effects of the mothers' diets on the offspring during nursing, the pups with mothers that had eaten regular chow were nursed by mother rats that were eating either the high-fat, high-sucrose or high-fructose corn syrup diets.

The pregnant rats' high-fat diet contained 50 percent fat, 25 percent carbohydrate and 25 percent protein, whereas the control diet reflected a recommended human diet, with 25 percent fat, 50 percent carbohydrate and 25 percent protein, Avena said. The offspring of rats that had high-fat diets while pregnant drank significantly more alcohol in adulthood than the offspring of rats with the regular chow diet, while there were no differences in the average daily amount of water they drank or chow they ate. The offspring of rats on the high-fat diet while pregnant also had significantly higher levels of triglycerides, a type of fat found in the bloodstream that can increase the risk of heart disease. Pups whose mothers had the high-fructose corn syrup or high-sucrose diets did not exhibit any differences in triglycerides compared to the group that ate regular chow.

To test the effects of diets high in sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup, researchers gave one group of the pregnant rats a daily diet of regular chow plus a 10 percent sucrose solution or a 16 percent high-fructose corn syrup solution. Pups nursed by rats with either high-sucrose or the high-fructose corn syrup diets while pregnant drank more alcohol compared to offspring born to the group that did not have sugar. Further, pups exposed to either of the sugar-rich diets before birth or during nursing became hyperactive when given low doses of amphetamine, suggesting sensitivity to the drug. These animals also weighed significantly more at the end of the study than those born to the rats that ate regular chow.

Previous research with lab animals and people has shown that overeating foods that taste good alters brain reward systems, and diets with excessive fat and sugar can lead to increased appetite as well as some addiction-like behaviors, Avena said. "Our findings suggest that even while [rats are] still in the womb, exposure to high-fat and sugar-rich diets can, in addition to increasing body weight, lead to a predisposition to drink alcohol and a sensitivity to drugs," she said.

Berlusconi says need justice reform or elections

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's center right must push for reform of the justice system or seek new elections, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi told lawmakers from his People of Freedom Party, according to a source at the meeting on Friday.

"If there is no reform of the justice system, we are ready for new elections," he told the meeting, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

On Thursday a court upheld a conviction for tax fraud against Berlusconi, threatening both his position as center-right leader and the stability of Italy's fragile coalition government.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (www.incnow.tv) -- Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett has resigned from as Florida's Education Commissioner after news broke about a school grade change scandal earlier this week.

Indiana's A-F grading system came into question following reports from the Associated Press, that Bennett oversaw efforts to ensure a top Republican donor's school received an "A" while he was in his position in Indiana.

Current Superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz told the Associated Press that the state's Department of Education would examine the A-F grade calculations to make sure that each school had received the grade they earned in 2012.

Bennett lost to Ritz in the 2012 general election, and quickly relocated to Florida, where he was appointed to his position.

Man who peddled the Rob Ford crack video identified by Toronto Star

The video allegedly showing Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack never turned up, but another mystery has apparently been solved.

The Toronto Star reported Tuesday that it had identified the man who showed reporters the cellphone video in the backseat of a car in Etobicoke: 27-year-old Mohamed Siad, who was arrested in June as part of a massive sting operation by Toronto police aimed at gun and drug trafficking.

The police bust, dubbed Project Traveller, led to the arrest of 43 suspects, many from the Dixon Rd. apartments where the crack video was said to be stored. The Toronto Sun reported Friday that Siad tried to use the crack video as a bargaining chip in securing a plea deal, but the prosecution didn?t bite.

According to the Sun?s sources, the prosecution felt it couldn?t prove that Ford was smoking crack in the video without a witness to the act.

Siad remains in prison and was repeatedly stabbed while behind bars shortly after his arrest, allegedly because others arrested as part of Project Traveller resented the extra scrutiny the crack scandal brought to the drug activity at Dixon Rd.

The Star says it has met ?a wall of silence? from prosecutors and Siad?s lawyer during its investigation of the man.

Two reporters for the Toronto Star and the editor of Gawker were shown the alleged video in May, but the journalists only knew a middleman?s identity. The man in possession of the video, who also claimed to have sold drugs to the mayor, remained unknown until now.

The video in question allegedly showed the Toronto mayor inhaling from a glass pipe and making homophobic and racist remarks. The owner of the video, now alleged to be Siad, wanted to sell the video for a ?six-figure? sum in order to move to Alberta and start a new life for himself.

However, before either the Star or Gawker could secure the money, word got out that this explosive footage existed and Gawker published its first bombshell shortly before midnight on May 16. The Toronto Star soon followed with its own report, setting off a two-months-long media circus that only recently died down.

There have been numerous Rob Ford videos related to the crack video, but never the real deal. It?s unknown whether the footage still exists and the mayor has never admitted to either the use of crack cocaine or the existence of said video.

Reubin Askew: Governor who modernized Florida stays the same

Times change. Reubin Askew doesn?t.

The oldest living former Florida governor views government as a force for good, not evil, rates personal integrity as a cornerstone of public service and encourages young people to get involved in politics.

Askew still teaches public-administration courses to students at Florida State University, though this will be his final year in the classroom. Tall and white-haired, with a black cane in hand, he will turn 85 in a few weeks and recently became a great-grandfather.

But he loves sharing his experiences, especially with students.

He was honored with loud sustained ovations Monday by graduate students in FSU?s Applied American Politics and Policy program in a ceremony held in the Senate chamber in the historic Old Capitol.

It was in that room where Askew, as a young senator in the late 1960s, helped force rural ?pork chop? senators to redistribute political power based on the principle of one man one vote, even though ?Rube? himself came from prime pork chop territory: Pensacola.

?I don?t think they ever forgave me,? Askew said.

Askew is considered one of Florida?s greatest governors. The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University rated him one of the 10 best in the United States in the 20th century.

He was elected in 1970 on a risky populist platform that included taxing profits of corporations the way neighboring Georgia did. (Gov. Rick Scott wants to phase out the corporate profits tax.)

He stressed racial diversity and peaceful desegregation of schools, modernized an antiquated judiciary and in 1978, during his last year in office, stopped casino gambling.

When a recalcitrant Legislature refused to pass ethics reform after a series of scandals, he took his case straight to the people and voters wrote the ?Sunshine Amendment? into the Constitution, with financial disclosure requirements and limits on post-employment lobbying by elected officials.

At first blush, Askew, a Democrat, and Senate President Don Gaetz, a Republican from Niceville, would seem to have little in common but for their common Panhandle links.

But building on what Askew began, Gaetz took Sunshine a step further this past session by championing stronger ethics laws, including online posting of legislators? financial records.

Gaetz, who was at Monday?s ceremony, joked about a?rumor? that Askew was plotting a political comeback.

?We have a plan for Alex Sink, Charlie Crist, Nan Rich and Bill Nelson,? Gaetz said. ?But we wouldn?t stand a chance if Reubin Askew ran for governor again. So, please, sir, don?t get any ideas.?

Askew?s days of holding public office are long past, but his legacy is secure as one of his state?s best leaders. Instead, he urges young people to get involved.

In his talk to the FSU students, Askew marveled at President Jimmy Carter?s ability to hold a smile endlessly.

?One of the biggest problems I had when I first started going to the Strawberry Festival in Plant City was to be able to be able to smile for 5 miles without blinking,? Askew said, ?in total sincerity.?

Steve Bousquet is the Tampa Bay Times? Tallahassee bureau chief.

Analysis: Pope's revolution; not all are pleased

In this May 29, 2013 file photo, Pope Francis holds his skull-cap as he leaves at the end of his weekly general audience, in St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican. Since his March 2013 election, Pope Francis has started a revolution in the Roman Catholic church that charmed millions and the mainstream media, as he goes about doing what he was elected to do: reform not just the dysfunctional Vatican bureaucracy but the church itself, using his own persona and personal history as a model. VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Francis Revolution is underway. Not everyone is pleased.

Four months into his papacy, Francis has called on young Catholics in the trenches to take up spiritual arms to shake up a dusty, doctrinaire church that is losing faithful and relevance. He has said women must have a greater role ? not as priests, but a place in the church that recognizes that Mary is more important than any of the apostles. And he has turned the Vatican upside down, quite possibly knocking the wind out of a poisonously homophobic culture by merely uttering the word "gay" and saying: so what?

In between, he has charmed millions of faithful and the mainstream news media, drawing the second-largest crowd ever to a papal Mass. That should provide some insurance as he goes about doing what he was elected to do: reform not just the dysfunctional Vatican bureaucracy but the church itself, using his own persona and personal history as a model.

"He is restoring credibility to Catholicism," said church historian Alberto Melloni.

Such enthusiasm isn't shared across the board.

Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI, had coddled traditionalist Catholics attached to the old Latin Mass and opposed to the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council. That group greeted Francis' election with concern ? and now is watching its worst fears come true. Francis has spoken out both publicly and privately against such "restoratist groups," which he accuses of being navel-gazing retrogrades out of touch with the evangelizing mission of the church in the 21st century.

His recent decision to forbid priests of a religious order from celebrating the old Latin Mass without explicit authorization seemed to be abrogating one of the big initiatives of Benedict's papacy, a 2007 decree allowing broader use of the pre-Vatican II Latin liturgy for all who want it. The Vatican denied he was contradicting Benedict, but these traditional Catholics see in Francis' words and deeds a threat. They are in something of a retreat.

"Be smart. There will be time in the future for people to sort what Vatican II means and what it doesn't mean," the Rev. John Zuhlsdorf warned his traditionalist readers in a recent blog post. "But mark my words: If you gripe about Vatican II right now, in this present environment, you could lose what you have attained."

Even more mainstream conservative Catholics aren't thrilled with Francis.

In a recent interview with the National Catholic Reporter, Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput said right-wing Catholics "generally have not been really happy" with Francis.

To be sure, Francis has not changed anything about church teaching. Nothing he has said or done is contrary to doctrine; everything he has said and done champions the Christian concepts of loving the sinner but not the sin and having a church that is compassionate, welcoming and merciful.

But tone and priorities can themselves constitute change, especially when considering issues that aren't being emphasized, such as church doctrine on abortion, gay marriage and other issues frequently referenced by Benedict and Pope John Paul II.

The Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, used the word "gay" for perhaps the first time in its 150-year history on Wednesday, in an article marveling at the change Francis has brought.

"In just a few words, the novelty has been expressed clearly and without threatening the church's tradition," the newspaper said about Francis' comments on gays and women. "You can change everything without changing the basic rules, those on which Catholic tradition are based."

The biggest headline came in Francis' inflight news conference on the way home from Brazil this week, when he was asked about a trusted monsignor who reportedly once had a gay lover.

"Who am I to judge?" he asked, when it comes to the sexual orientation of priests, as long as they are searching for God and have good will.

Under normal circumstances, given the sexual morality at play in the Catholic Church, outing someone as actively gay is a death knell for career advancement. Vatican officials considering high-profile appointments often weigh whether someone is "ricattabile" ? blackmailable.

But Francis said he investigated the allegations himself and found nothing to back them up. And that regardless, if someone is gay and repents, God not only forgives but forgets. Francis said everyone else should too. By calling out the blackmail for what it is, Francis may well have clipped the wings of an ugly but common practice at the Vatican.

Francis also made headlines with his call for the church to develop a new theology of women's role, saying it's not enough to have altar girls or a woman heading a Vatican department given the critical role that women have in helping the church grow.

While those comments topped the news from the 82-minute news conference, he revealed plenty of other insights that reinforce the idea that a very different papacy is underway.

?Annulments: He said the church's judicial system of annulling marriages must be "looked at again" because church tribunals simply aren't up to the task. That could be welcome news to many Catholics who often have to wait years for an annulment, the process by which the church determines that a marriage effectively never took place.

?Divorce and remarriage: He suggested an opening in church teaching which forbids a divorced and remarried Catholic from taking communion unless they get an annulment, saying: "This is a time for mercy."

?Church governance: He said his decision to appoint eight cardinals to advise him was based on explicit requests from cardinals at the conclave that elected him who wanted "outsiders" ? not Vatican officials ? governing the church. Francis obliged, essentially creating a parallel government for the church alongside the Vatican bureaucracy: a pope and a cabinet of cardinals representing the church in each of the continents.

And then there was Rio.

From the moment he touched down, it was clear change was afoot. No armored popemobile, just a simple Fiat sedan ? one that got swarmed by adoring fans when it got lost and stuck in traffic. Rather than recoil in fear, Francis rolled down his window. Given that popes until recently were carried around on a chair to keep them above the fray, that gesture alone was revolutionary.

He told 35,000 pilgrims from his native Argentina to make a "mess" in their dioceses, shake things up and go out into the streets to spread their faith, even at the expense of confrontation with their bishops. He led by example, diving into the crowds in one of Rio's most violent slums.

"Either you do the trip as it needs to be done, or you don't do it at all," he told Brazil's TV Globo. He said he simply couldn't have visited Rio "closed up in a glass box."
