I continue to be amazed at the number of people who want to start a charitable nonprofit organization but have absolutely no knowledge about the nonprofit sector. More surprising is when people say to me that the reason they want to start a nonprofit is to get money or worse is to create a job for them. Really?
The IRS designation is not a business plan ? it is a tax exempt status that offers organizations certain privileges in exchange for providing a service or benefit to the community. Period. If you are receiving a tax benefit then you are expected to be transparent and accountable. You must report to the IRS and the state. You are responsible to the community and must raise funds to meet your mission.
Doing good is a wonderful thing but starting and managing a nonprofit is a responsibility and I wish all those who are interested will take the time to learn about the nonprofit sector. There are many resources. Check with your local library or nonprofit resource center.
