Domestic violence is when a person, mainly a woman, is being physically or emotionally harmed during their relationship. There are many reasons why someone would abuse their significant other. Some may be under stress due to lack of money, restraint from old activities that were in their lives before the relationship (loss in freedom), isolation from friends and family, or it can just make a person feel superior. Domestic violence can cause very harmful effects to not only the person taking the abuse, but just the family overall. It was not seen as a social problem at first, but as time progressed, it started being defined as one.
Domestic violence was not looked at as a social problem at first. At one point, it was socially accepted because it was merely seen as a man beating his wife to show who had the most power in the household and who the authority figure was. Men were seen as more powerful and dominant than women, which society felt was okay to express through beatings.
As time progressed, people became more informed about domestic violence and what it was, but still, it was not defined a social problem. Women, who were being abused, were afraid of speaking up. This means that there weren?t enough records that could prove that this is truly a social problem. Many people who were concerned about this issue didn?t stop looking for ways to make people aware that this is in fact a social problem and it needed to be fixed. Some people even conducted anonymous surveys to hand out to women in relationships. They would have questions that ask them if they were being abused in any way by their significant other and since it was anonymous, women were more honest. Most surveys showed a significant amount of women were being abused, making it defined as a social problem. After hearing that this was a problem, many women started speaking up for themselves and some reported their cases, which made more of an impact. Domestic violence was slowly being seen as a social problem after people started recognizing it as one.
People took action against domestic violence by making laws against it. Different laws made it illegal for men to beat their wives and some even made laws where women could separate from their abusive husbands if necessary. Since law was involved, police were to enforce this and they became involved in the social problem. Even though more people were aware about domestic violence and people took action to stop it, there are still a lot of relationships where domestic violence has existed. It has been an ongoing cycle for many years.
Even though domestic violence was not always considered a social problem, it is now considered as one in our society today. It has been controversial on whether or not this is a real problem, but the majority believes that it is. Since more people believe that it?s really a problem than not, people are still taking action towards this horrible problem. It is not completely gone from our society, which is why there are many resources and help to prevent domestic violence. People have been and will always fight against this social problem until it is resolved.
