(AP) ? Neil Heslin says it's all about his slain son, Jesse.

Heslin, a 50-year-old construction worker, says he normally pays little attention to politics. But he was yanked painfully into the middle of the nation's gun debate last December, when his 6-year-old son, Jesse, along with 19 other first-graders and six educators, was shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's a burden, it's more than a burden on me," Heslin said in an interview Tuesday as he and three dozen others ? including other Newtown families and relatives of other mass shooting victims ? arrived in Washington for two days of lobbying lawmakers. "But I have to do it for my little boy."

Heslin is set to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday in support of legislation by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to ban assault weapons.

Other witnesses testifying to the Senate panel include William Begg, an emergency room doctor who treated Newtown victims that day, and U.S. attorney John Walsh from Colorado.

"Guns that are fashioned from war don't belong on the streets," Feinstein said Tuesday, acknowledging that her legislation to ban assault weapons faced difficult odds in Congress. "Maybe I've just seen too much from my days as mayor and watching this stuff for 30 years."

Feinstein, who rose to become San Francisco mayor, was on the city's board of supervisors in 1978 when Mayor George Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk were fatally shot in City Hall.

Across the Capitol on Wednesday, the House Education and Workforce Committee planned to hear from school safety experts and counselors about how to keep students safe.

Witnesses testifying to the Republican-controlled House panel were expected to emphasize the role of school resource officers ? security professionals who are often armed and can double as informal counselors and liaisons to law enforcement. Those officers are commonplace in many schools and help officials develop safety plans.

Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers, was among those slated to testify, along with a school counselor and a school safety director.

Heslin and his group met with around six lawmakers and aides Tuesday, mostly Senate Democrats from Republican-leaning states. Participants said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said he would try to help and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., expressed optimism that the Senate would produce gun legislation, but neither committed to anything specific.

In his prepared Senate testimony, Heslin said he's been told his son died yelling to people to run. He said Jesse was hit by one bullet grazing the side of his head, another hitting his forehead.

"That means the last thing my son did was look Adam Lanza straight in the face and scream to his classmates to run," Heslin said, referring to the 20-year-old who committed the massacre. "The last thing he saw was that coward's eyes."

Despite the raw emotion, Feinstein's effort to ban assault weapons is expected to fall short due to opposition by the National Rifle Association and many Republicans, plus wariness by moderate Democrats.

Feinstein's bill has attracted 21 co-sponsors, all Democrats. Including herself, it is sponsored by eight of the 10 Judiciary panel Democrats ? precarious for a committee where Democrats outnumber Republicans 10-8. Democrats on the panel who haven't co-sponsored the measure include the chairman, Pat Leahy of Vermont, who said Monday he hadn't seen the bill.

President Barack Obama made bans on assault weapons and large capacity magazines key parts of the gun curbs he proposed in January in response to the Connecticut school massacre.

The cornerstone of his package is a call for universal background checks for gun buyers, some version of which seems to have a stronger chance of moving through Congress. Currently, only sales by federally licensed gun dealers require such checks, which are designed to prevent criminals and others from obtaining firearms.

Obama also proposed providing more money to school districts to hire school resource officers and counselors and take other safety steps.

Feinstein's bill would ban future sales of assault weapons and magazines carrying more than 10 rounds of ammunition but exempt those that already exist. It would bar sales, manufacturing and imports of semiautomatic rifles and pistols that can use detachable magazines and have threaded barrels or other military features. The measure specifically bans 157 firearms but excludes 2,258 others in an effort to avoid barring hunting and sporting weapons.

Feinstein, who helped create a 1994 assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, and other supporters cite studies showing use of the firearms in crimes diminished while the prohibition lasted. A 2004 report said the proportion of gun crimes involving assault weapons dropped by up to 72 percent in five cities studied.

Opponents cite data from that same study showing assault weapons were used in only 2 percent to 8 percent of gun crimes, arguing that a ban would have little impact. The study also estimated there were 1.5 million assault weapons owned privately in the U.S. in 1994, and an estimated 30 million high-capacity magazines as of 1999, which critics say means exempting them would diminish a ban's effect

The Engadget Interview: Qualcomm's Rob Chandhok on the Internet of things at MWC 2013

The Engadget Interview Qualcomm's Rob Chandhok on the Internet of things at MWC2013

Few people understand the Internet of things better than Rob Chandhok -- president of Internet services at Qualcomm -- and we had the chance to sit down with him in Barcelona after our interview with Raj Talluri. We chatted about AllJoyn, a set of open source services which the company just revamped to incorporate a simple notification protocol -- an "SMS for things" -- small and durable enough to be useful for the life on an appliance, like a fridge or a washer. This provides a universal mechanism for notification and control, such as WiFi on-boarding, for example. He also mentioned AllJoyn audio, a streaming protocol that Qualcomm and DoubleTwist collaborated on. We then discussed various approaches and network topologies for building the Internet of things, such as IPv6-connected products with cloud-based logic vs. devices on local area networks that interact with the Internet via gateways (something that's prevalent in modern home automation). Check out the full interview video after the break.

Nut-cracking monkeys use shapes to strategize their use of tools

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Bearded capuchin monkeys deliberately place palm nuts in a stable position on a surface before trying to crack them open, revealing their capacity to use tactile information to improve tool use. The results are published February 27 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Dorothy Fragaszy and colleagues from the University of Georgia.

The researchers analyzed the monkeys' tool-use skills by videotaping adult monkeys cracking palm nuts on a surface they used frequently for the purpose. They found that monkeys positioned the nuts flat side down more frequently than expected by random chance. When placing the nuts, the monkeys knocked the nuts on the surface a few times before releasing them, after which the nuts very rarely moved.

The researchers suggest that the monkeys may have learned to optimize this tool-use strategy by repeatedly knocking the nut to achieve the stable position prior to cracking it. They conclude that the monkeys' strategic placement of the nut reveals that the monkeys pay attention to the fit between the nut and the surface each time they place the nut, and adjust their actions accordingly.

In a parallel experiment, the scientists asked blindfolded people to perform the same action, positioning palm nuts on an anvil as if to crack them with a stone or hammer. Like the monkeys, the human participants also followed tactile cues to place the nut flat-side down on the anvil.

Cablevision sues Viacom over fees for low-rated networks

(Reuters) - Cablevision Systems Corp has accused Viacom Inc in an antitrust lawsuit of forcing it to pay for more than a dozen low-rated cable networks in order to get access to Viacom's more popular channels such as Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central.

The case represents the latest flare-up in the contentious relationships between distributors and program makers.

Industry observers will be watching to see if the lawsuit could disrupt the model of selling bundles of cable channels to operators, a common practice employed by Viacom and its media company peers in the $97.6 billion cable industry.

"Viacom effectively forces Cablevision's customers to pay for and receive little-watched channels in order to get the channels they actually want," Cablevision said in a statement.

In response to the lawsuit, Viacom said that "these arrangements have been upheld by a number of federal courts and on appeal."

The two companies signed a long-term programming agreement in December 2012 for Cablevision to carry Viacom's networks for an undisclosed sum.

The lawsuit seeks to void that agreement and it also wants Viacom banned from making similar deals involving networks it calls "ancillary." Cablevision says these less popular channels include CMT, MTV Hits, Nick Jr, Nicktoons, Palladia and VH1 Classic.

Viacom said it "will vigorously defend this transparent attempt by Cablevision to use the courts to renegotiate our existing two month old agreement."

The case is under seal and not available for public viewing.

The Cablevision press release does not reveal how much money is at stake in the case.

According to SNL Kagan, a firm that tracks fees for cable networks, Cablevision pays about $38.8 million a year for the 14 networks it says are not must-have channels. Four of the 14 Viacom networks in dispute are available to some, but not all, of Cablevision's subscribers.

That is about half of the roughly $76.8 million Cablevision pays Viacom for the eight networks it deems must-haves, which include MTV, MTV2, VH1, Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodeon, Spike, and TV Land.

LONG FIGHT AHEAD

Todd Mitchell, a Brean Capital analyst who follows the cable industry, said that Cablevision is setting itself up for a prolonged dispute with Viacom, since its programming agreement with the media company is already set and it is not looking to gain leverage in carriage negotiations, which are over.

"Cablevision is not looking for relief in the next couple of quarters. They are looking at this as a long-term fight," Mitchell said.

Bernstein Research analyst Todd Juenger called Viacom "an obvious target" for pay-TV distributors since it has been struggling with declining cable ratings, most notably at its Nickelodeon network.

Mitchell said he expects more lawsuits from other cable and satellite operators who have been complaining about programming costs spiraling out of control. DirecTV declined to comment on whether it would consider its own lawsuit against Viacom while Time Warner Cable did not respond to a request for comment on that issue.

James Dolan, Cablevision's chief executive, has dropped channels instead of agreeing to high carriage fee increases. In recent years, Cablevision has blacked out channels owned by Fox and Tribune Co, for instance. Fox and its affiliated networks are owned by News Corp. News Corp had no comment.

Blackouts occur when programmers and operators cannot reach an agreement before their programming contract expires, making networks unavailable for consumers to watch.

Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt has been another critic of high programming costs. After Al Gore's low-rated Current TV announced its sale to Al Jazeera America in January, Time Warner Cable promptly dropped the channel from its lineup. The company also dropped arts-focused network Ovation. Time Warner Cable said at the time that the channels' low ratings did not merit the fees it was paying for them.

A Time Warner Cable spokesman said on Tuesday: "We think this lawsuit raises important issues, and we look forward to their resolution in the courts."

Last summer, the biggest U.S. satellite provider, DirecTV, dropped Viacom's networks in 20 million homes for nine full days.

Comcast, which ranks as not only the nation's largest cable distributor but also owns cable networks such as USA, SyFy, and MSNBC, declined to comment.

Charlie Ergen, the outspoken billionaire chairman of Dish Network, has argued for an "a la carte" model of programming that would give consumers the choice to drop channels they do not watch and drive down carriage fees for Pay TV operators.

"Cable companies are looking to push back at this practice where the networks have tied these guys into a business model," Brean Capital's Mitchell said.

The case is Cablevision Systems Corporation, et al., v. Viacom International Inc, et al., U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, 13-1278.

Fiscal nightmare looms at 'bloated' Pentagon

By Tom Curry, National Affairs Writer, NBC News

While Chuck Hagel?s quest to become defense secretary was a long and painful ordeal, he?ll be facing a different kind of pain once he?s confirmed - likely on Tuesday - and replaces Leon Panetta at the Pentagon.

In addition to the spending cuts required by the Budget Control Act, which will trim the Defense Department?s budget resources by 8 percent in the current fiscal year, Hagel faces a nightmarish budget challenge.

He will be running a department with nearly 1.4 million people serving in uniform and nearly 800,000 civilian employees.

Hagel?s department is bigger than several major U.S. corporations, but its finances remain deeply troubled, obscure and impenetrable ? even to budget experts and even after more than 20 years of warnings from the federal government?s accounting watchdog, the Government Accountability Office.

Just two weeks ago, the GAO kept the Pentagon on its annual "High Risk List" of departments whose books are so mysterious and opaque that they're at high risk of fraud, waste and mismanagement.

Related: After seven-week struggle, Hagel poised for defense confirmation

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

Former Senator Chuck Hagel testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing to become the next secretary of defense on Capitol Hill January 31, 2013 in Washington, DC.

The GAO said that the Defense Department ?is one of the few federal entities that cannot accurately account for its spending or assets.? The report added, ?Without accurate, timely, and useful financial information, DOD is severely hampered in making sound decisions affecting its operations.?

As one specific example, the accounting watchdog cited the department?s supply-chain management which as of late 2011 had amassed $9.2 billion worth of excess inventory on hand and had already ordered $523 million worth of inventory which was purchased but likely unnecessary.

And the GAO noted that it had first put the Pentagon?s supply-chain management problem on its "High Risk List" in 1990.

Outside observers agree that the Pentagon?s finances are troubled and that it costs taxpayers too much money to get each aircraft carrier, missile, drone and other weapons system.

Retired Army Gen. David Barno, the former U.S. commander in Afghanistan and now a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, told a Council on Foreign Relations panel discussion earlier this month, ?We're delivering capability in the military sense for more and more overhead cost year after year after year? due to an ?egregiously inefficient Defense Department that's leaking money.?

He said the Pentagon?s method of operating is comparable to driving a 1985 Oldsmobile which is leaking oil, ?and every time we go out on the highway at 65 miles an hour, we come back after another day, there's more and more oil on the floor of our garage in the morning. And our solution has been to buy more oil, to put it in the engine and go drive it at 65 miles an hour.?

Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee engage in a sharp discussion regarding Chuck Hagel's nomination as defense secretary and his disclosure of personal income.

And Hagel himself said in August of 2011 that the Defense Department ?in many ways, has been bloated. Let's look at the reality here. The Defense Department's gotten everything it wanted the last 10 years and more.?

Despite the warnings from GAO and others, the Defense Department?s financial morass wasn?t a major focus of the questioning?last month at Hagel?s confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Hagel did field some queries on the department?s finances from Sens. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Angus King, I-Maine.

But apart from referring to the need for giving his subordinates in the Pentagon ?flexibility? and ?direction and expectations,? Hagel supplied little insight on what plans he might have in mind to make the Pentagon more accountable. And he more often asked questions than supplied answers.

Hagel did say that in both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Defense Department inspector generals had uncovered ?billions and billions of dollars that are unaccounted for. Corruption, fraud, waste, abuse, it really is quite astounding.?

But he added, ?When you think about the universe of money that went into both those wars, no one should be surprised.?

Then he asked ?How do we fix it? What we do? How do we learn from this??

He added more questions later in the hearing, ?Why aren't we auditing these programs? Where's the accountability? That's certainly an area that we're going to have to take a look at.? And within days Hagel will have his chance to begin that accountability and to reduce the bloat he saw in his department.

Preventing chronic pain with stress management

Feb. 25, 2013 ? For chronic pain sufferers, such as people who develop back pain after a car accident, avoiding the harmful effects of stress may be key to managing their condition. This is particularly important for people with a smaller-than-average hippocampus, as these individuals seem to be particularly vulnerable to stress. These are the findings of a study by Dr. Pierre Rainville, PhD in Neuropsychology,

Researcher at the Research Centre of the Institut universitaire de g?riatrie de Montr?al (IUGM) and Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at Universit? de Montr?al, along with ?tienne Vachon-Presseau, a PhD student in Neuropsychology. The study appeared in Brain.

"Cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, is sometimes called the 'stress hormone' as it is activated in reaction to stress. Our study shows that a small hippocampal volume is associated with higher cortisol levels, which lead to increased vulnerability to pain and could increase the risk of developing pain chronicity," explained ?tienne Vachon-Presseau.

As Dr. Pierre Rainville described, "Our research sheds more light on the neurobiological mechanisms of this important relationship between stress and pain. Whether the result of an accident, illness or surgery, pain is often associated with high levels of stress Our findings are useful in that they open up avenues for people who suffer from pain to find treatments that may decrease its impact and perhaps even prevent chronicity. To complement their medical treatment, pain sufferers can also work on their stress management and fear of pain by getting help from a psychologist and trying relaxation or meditation techniques."

Research summary

This study included 16 patients with chronic back pain and a control group of 18 healthy subjects. The goal was to analyze the relationships between four factors: 1) cortisol levels, which were determined with saliva samples; 2) the assessment of clinical pain reported by patients prior to their brain scan (self-perception of pain); 3) hippocampal volumes measured with anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); and 4) brain activations assessed with functional MRI (fMRI) following thermal pain stimulations. The results showed that patients with chronic pain generally have higher cortisol levels than healthy individuals.

Data analysis revealed that patients with a smaller hippocampus have higher cortisol levels and stronger responses to acute pain in a brain region involved in anticipatory anxiety in relation to pain. The response of the brain to the painful procedure during the scan partly reflected the intensity of the patient's current clinical pain condition. These findings support the chronic pain vulnerability model in which people with a smaller hippocampus develop a stronger stress response, which in turn increases their pain and perhaps their risk of suffering from chronic pain. This study also supports stress management interventions as a treatment option for chronic pain sufferers.

Port of Salalah holds union elections

Salalah: The Port of Salalah last week conducted the elections of the company's Union Administrative Authority (UAA) and the registration of General Assembly (union) members.

A total 875 employees at the Port of Salalah have registered with the union for the upcoming four-year period, of which approximately 85 per cent are Omani nationals and the remaining 15 per cent are expa-triates. These employees elected the leaders of the UAA from a group of 11 Omani candidates.

The Port of Salalah, currently the largest private sector employer in the Dhofar region with more than 2,200 employees, formed the first representative body in 2000. Following the amendment to Oman's Labour Law in 2006 to formalise the establishment of trade unions in Oman, the first official union body was elected at the port in 2009, which served its four-year term until 2012. The current round of elections lasted for two days, following staff members' enrolment and campaign.

The elections were supervised by Masoud bin Ali Jaaboub, head of the trade union organisations at the Dhofar governorate office for the Ministry of Manpower.
Masoud praised the administration's organising committee for maintaining transparency in its registration, nomination, and screening process.?

The newly elected UAA members include Salim Masoud Ali Bait Said, Zeyad Ahmed Salim Al Marhoon, Khalid Salim Ali Jaboob, Said Mahad Musallam Bait Said, Musallam Said Ahmed Tabook, Ali Salim Ali Al Jahfali, and Salim Said Musallam Al Kathiri.

Ahmed Akaak, Deputy CEO at the Port of Salalah, said, "At the Port of Salalah, we place a lot of emphasis on providing support to facilitate the work of the union authorities, and we praise all efforts made in this regard."

Hind Jumaan Hubais, the head of the election organising committee and member of the port's human resources department, said that the fact that the employees were fully exercising their electoral rights reflected the election's success and employee credibility.
Hubais also underlined the support offered by the members of the organising committee in this regard.

Former president of the port's UAA, Ahmed bin Salim Al Amri, pointed out that the new union authority was picking up from the previous union's success and the results that had been achieved in an era of strong dialogue and sound negotiations.

Al Amri also thanked the former members of the UAA for their hard work and offered his best wishes to the newly elected? members.

UFC 157 results: Ronda Rousey worried about sports bra as much as Liz Carmouche

UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey had more than opponent Liz Carmouche to worry about in their UFC 157 bout. She was also worried about a possible wardrobe malfunction.

Ronda Rousey proved to UFC fans that she's a force to be reckoned with by pulling off a first-round armbar victory over Liz Carmouche late in the first round of their UFC 157 main event fight. Rousey was in a bit of trouble early in the bout for a couple of reasons though. One was the fact that Carmouche was on her back hunting for a choke. The other was a the threat of a wardrobe malfunction. Rousey explained the situation to Ariel Helwani on Fuel's UFC 157 post-fight show:

"I was thinking about my bra, actually. I kept thinking, I didn't order this one myself, so they gave me my weigh in bra for the fight. If you look back, I was adjusting myself at one point while she was on my back. Multitasking!"

She also went into more detail about the whole UFC experience, and the fight itself:

"I was trying just to ignore everything until I was out there. It was weird. I was in there just yesterday so it felt like a familiar place. It didn't seem odd at all. I think I was less nervous. I think I was most nervous for the Julia Budd fight, way back, I don't know why I was so nervous for that one. On the ground I feel so comfortable. I don't ever feel like I'm in danger, so I don't mind taking a lot of risks. I felt fine with her on my back, I was thinking more about keeping my sports bra up while she is trying to choke me. I felt very safe and in control even though it didn't look like that."

Rousey (7-0) is expected to face the winner of the Cat Zingano-Miesha Tate bout for her next title defense.

The trip is inspired by San Francisco?s 45-31 win over the Packers in January. Colin Kaepernick had the most rushing yards (181) by a quarterback in NFL history, the longest run (56) by a QB in postseason history and the 49ers had 579 yards, a single-game postseason franchise record.

So, yeah, after being taken to school, the Packers will go to school.

?Five-hundred seventy-nine, that?s a number that will stick in our focus as a defense throughout the offseason,? McCarthy said. ?We?re studying the read option, the teams that are doing it in the NFL. We?re even going to the college ranks, we?ll have a couple college coaches come in, spend some time with our staff.

?Actually, our defensive staff is going to take a trip to Texas A&M. Kevin Sumlin is someone I have great respect for and with his ability to share from both the offensive side and the defensive side his experience in the read option. It?s something from an education, preparation standpoint that we will grow as a staff and be better prepared for in the future.?

In 2013, the Packers figure to face plenty of read option with dates against the 49ers, Redskins and Eagles, who are expected to employ the scheme under new coach Chip Kelly.

In January, the 49ers had 323 rushing yards, averaged 7.5 yards a carry and four rushing touchdowns against the Packers.

?San Francisco, they beat us twice last year,? McCarthy said. ?You look at the difference in the first game and the second game, and obviously the glaring statistic and the information in the second game was obviously the production of their quarterback ? San Francisco had a great year; like I said they beat us twice, and that?ll definitely be a focus of our offseason.?

Green Bay, of course, won?t be the only team dissecting the Pistol offense and the read option.

As 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman noted shortly after the Super Bowl, though, those teams may not see the exact same scheme in 2013. The 49ers will also study and evolve this offseason, Roman told Sports Illustrated?s Peter King.

?We?re going to do the same thing, too,? he said. ?We won?t be the same either.?

Vatican lashes out at false pre-conclave reporting

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican has lashed out at the media for what it says are a series of defamatory and false media reports before the conclave to elect Pope Benedict XVI's successor, saying they're an attempt to influence the election.

The Vatican secretariat of state said in a statement Saturday the Catholic Church has for centuries insisted on the independence of cardinals to elect their pope. Now, it said, "the weight of public opinion is in play."

It deplored that cardinals have been exposed to "a diffusion of news that is often unverified, unverifiable and actually false, with serious damage to people and institutions."

Italian media have been rife with reports about the contents of a secret dossier prepared by three cardinals into the origins of the leaks of Vatican documents.

Canada ambassador says he feels slighted by 'Argo'

TORONTO (AP) -- Canada's former ambassador in Iran, who protected Americans at great personal risk during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, says if "Argo" wins the Oscar for best picture on Sunday there would be something wrong with director Ben Affleck if he didn't mention Canada.

Ken Taylor said Friday he continues to feel slighted by a movie that he says makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis. He says there would be no movie if the Canadian embassy didn't take in the Americans.

Taylor says if Affleck doesn't say something in his acceptance speech "then it's a further reflection" on him.

Affleck's CIA thriller "Argo" is widely expected to take home the best-picture trophy on Sunday.

Paul Ryan offers optimism to GOP faithful

NEWPORT BEACH -- Rep. Paul Ryan, one of Republican's brightest stars on Capitol Hill, dropped into Orange County on Thursday to lay out his vision how lawmakers can roll back the "big government" reforms of President Barack Obama.

While one local congressman, Democrat Alan Lowenthal, took advantage of the congressional recess to hold a roundtable discussion of the repercussions if sequestration cuts are allowed to go into effect on March 1, Ryan spoke only in broad terms about the budget and the GOP approach.

"We are going to do everything we can to get our spending and our debt under control to prevent a debt crisis," said Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, 2012 vice presidential candidate, and possible 2016 presidential contestant.

Click here to listen to Ryan's entire speech.

Ryan gave a 10-minute speech at a Hyatt Regency Newport Beach luncheon hosted by Rep. Ed Royce, R-Fullerton. Ryan told the crowd of about 260 that voters would back Republican initiatives once they saw Obama's reforms in action.

"The results of big government, in practice -- the fiscal recklessness, the debt that it grows, the lack of freedom of choice in health care and all these other sectors of our economy -- that will all happen in reality now," Ryan said.

"So our vision of showing the country -- here's how to balance the budget, here's how to reform the tax code, here's how you grow the economy, here's how you fix the immigration laws, here's how you fix health care -- we now get to showcase these ideas in contrast to big government policies that have proven, wherever tested, not to work."

Earlier in the day, freshman Rep. Lowenthal hosted an event at his Long Beach office that focused exclusively on the sequestration cuts -- a sharp contrast to Ryan's message of the need to shrink government.

Lowenthal, whose district extends from Long Beach to Garden Grove and Westminster, brought in education, airport, mental health and small business representatives to outline the across-the-board cuts called for by sequestration. Among the predictions: cuts in school programs for the disabled and vocational education; longer lines and fewer flights at the airport; and fewer crucial loans to small businesses.

"This is going to have a devastating impact on our economic recovery," Lowenthal said. "It will especially impact the people who are the most vulnerable."

Ryan has predicted that Congress will allow sequestration cuts to kick in. Lowenthal doubts there is time to finalize a comprehensive alternative, but thinks Congress will find a way to again postpone the cuts originally scheduled to become effective Jan. 1.

"I think that's a terrible way to go, but it's better than the sequester," he said. "No matter what we do by March 1, it won't be the grand bargain we eventually need."

Ryan may have best summed up the situation during his Newport Beach stop.

"Winston Churchill was right when he said that the Americans can be counted on to do the right thing," Ryan said. "But only after they've exhausted all the other possibilities."

Why Won't the Government Let You Unlock Your Phone? 100,000 People Want to Know

Suppose you're upset with your cell-phone carrier, and you'd like to switch. Under current law, you can take your phone number with you when you leave. But if you want to take your phone? Forget it.

Ever since an obscure rule protecting the process of "unlocking" expired from copyright law last month, it's been illegal to port your device to another carrier. In fact, any American who's ever unlocked his or her phone is now at risk for steep fines, court battles with carriers, and even jail time.

But a team of copyright activists has been lobbying the government to keep unlocking legal. And early Thursday morning, they won a small victory: Their petition to the White House finally accumulated 100,000 signatures, meaning it must now be met with an official government response.

"A hundred thousand people should be taken seriously," said Derek Khanna, one of those leading the charge. "There hasn't been a real concise explanation about why ? individuals who unlock their own phones [should] be legally liable for up to five years in prison."

In particular, the petition requests that President Obama ask the Library of Congress to reconsider its stance on unlocking--and if that doesn't work, to press Congress for legislative action. An ideal bill would protect four activities, Khanna told me: adaptive technology for the blind, such as the kind that scans books and handwriting into text computers can display; backing up DVDs to your computer;?jail-breaking your phone so that you can modify it beyond the manufacturer's preferred limits; and unlocking.

Hold on a second. How did the Library of Congress gain the power to control what you do with your devices? It comes down to a provision in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that lets the Librarian of Congress set exemptions for things that "circumvent" anti-piracy systems. Unlocking and gaining top-level privileges to modify your phone have so far been protected by these exemptions--and in fact, jail-breaking your phone will still be legal into 2015. But these exemptions have to be renewed every three years. This time, when the unlocking exemption came up, the Library of Congress demurred. (A call to LOC wasn't returned.)

This means wireless companies that don't like the idea of customers leaving their service with their phones can theoretically sue.

Obama could still rebuff the petitioners, but he would be taking an unpopular position, according to Khanna.

"If the White House wants to defend that position, that's up to them," Khanna said. "I don't think they will defend that, but they could."

Former NFL Pro Bill Romanowski Sacked By Tax Court (Yes, Romanowski Played Defense. Puns Are Hard)

Bill Romanowski, former American football player.

Bill Romanowski, former American football player. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

During his 16-year NFL career, former 49ers/Eagles/Broncos/Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski was no stranger to controversy. Whether he was breaking QB Kerry Collins? jaw in a preseason game, spitting in the face of opposing wide receiver J.J. Stokes, or ending the career of a teammate with a punch to the eye during a training camp scuffle, Romanowski had a habit of making news for all the wrong reasons; his propensity for poor decisions often overshadowing his consistently solid play.

It would appear Romanowski?s decision-making didn?t improve with retirement, because earlier today it was revealed that immediately after Romanowski stopped playing on Sundays, he got caught up in a tax shelter. As a result, the Tax Court denied $13 million worth of losses taken on the Romanowskis? 2003 tax return from a purported horse-breeding business, holding the footballer liable for approximately $4.6 million in additional tax.

In 2003, Romanowski got hooked up with a Denver attorney who immediate began singing the praises of ClassicStar, a horse-breeding business. In short, the program involved leasing mares owned by ClassicStar, which in turn would provide boarding and care for the mares and breed the mares to stallions. Any foals produced from the breeding would belong to the Romanowskis.

In October 2003, an accountant of ClassicStar worked up an ?NOL illustration,? indicating that in order to offset their taxable income from 1998 through 2002, the Romanowskis would need to generate a loss of $13,092,732 from their horse-breeding activity. Thus, it was decided that the Romanowskis would invest that amount in the program to produce foals. ?(As an aside, let it be noted that basing an investment on the amount of loss necessary to wipe out previous tax liabilities, rather than a motivation for profits, will never be viewed favorably by the IRS.)

Soon after joining the program, things began to turn sour for the Romanowskis, and they were partly to blame. When they signed the mare lease agreement, the Romanowskis? had not negotiated or seen a list of the horse pairings they would receive for their breeding program. Rather, they relied on ClassicStar to pick the horse pairings they would receive.

This reliance on ClassicStar was clearly misplaced, because despite the fact that the Romanowskis were promised 68 pairings of thoroughbreds, the horses actually received were more Mr. Ed than Secretariat. In fact, only four of the 68 listed pairings were thoroughbred horses; the remaining pairings were quarter horses.

Even though over 90% of the horses on the schedule were not delivered as promised, the Romanowskis chose to continue with the program, explaining to the court that they had reached an oral agreement from ClassicStar under which it would substitute an unknown number of thoroughbred pairings in for the listed quarter horse pairings.

The Romanowskis received an income and expense summary for 2003 from ClassicStar which showed no income and total expenses of $13,092,732. The resulting loss offset their 2003 income, and net operating losses were carried back to 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002, resulting in a federal tax refund of nearly $4 million.

The IRS denied the loss in full, arguing that the Romanowskis? horse-breeding activity was not entered into for profit and was thus governed by the hobby-loss rules of Section 183.

As a reminder, if an activity constitutes a for-profit trade or business, expenses may generally be deducted in full under Section 162. To the contrary, if an activity is not entered into for profit, it is a hobby, and expenses can only be deducted to the extent of any income generated by the activity.

To help taxpayers and the IRS decide if an activity is entered into for profit or a hobby, the regulations under Section 183 (the so-called ?hobby loss rules?), provide? nine factors, which if answered in the affirmative, are indicative of a for-profit business.

1. The manner in which the taxpayer carries on the activity. Does he complete accurate books? Were records used to improve performance?

2. The expertise of the taxpayer or his advisers. Did the taxpayer study the activities business practices? Did he consult with experts?

3. The time and effort expended by the taxpayer in carrying on the activity. Does he devote much of his personal time and effort?

4. The expectation that the assets used in the activity may appreciate in value. Is the plan to generate profits through asset appreciation?

5. The success of the taxpayer in carrying on similar or dissimilar activities. Has he converted other activities from unprofitable to profitable?

6. The taxpayer?s history of income or losses with respect to the activity.? Has the taxpayer become profitable in a reasonable amount of time?

7. The amount of occasional profits. Even a single year of profits can be a strong indication that an activity is not a hobby.

8. The financial status of the taxpayer. Does the taxpayer have other income sources that are being offset by the losses of the activity?

9.? Does the activity lack elements of personal pleasure or recreation? If the activity has large personal elements it is indicative of a hobby.

In Romanowski, the Tax Court analyzed these factors and overwhelmingly concluded that the Romanowskis did not enter into the breeding arrangement with ClassicStar with the intent to make a profit. They Romanowskis kept no records; rather, they relied on ClassicStar to do everything. They neglected to fight for their bargained-for number of thoroughbreds, a clear indication, in the court?s eyes, that they were not carrying on the activity in a businesslike manner.

In addition, the Romanowskis never consulted with industry experts on how to turn a profit through horse breeding. Lastly, and most damning, the Romanowskis used the resulting $13 million loss to wipe out all current year income and generate a $4 million tax refund.

After weighing the nine factors, the court?s decision was easy:

We believe petitioners? participation in the program was almost entirely motivated by tax benefits available to them through such participation?.we find that petitioners? horse-breeding activities were not engaged in for profit, and the related expenses are therefore not deductible under section 162 or 212 for the years at issue.

Yota To Mass Produce E-ink Phone In Singapore

yotaphoneRussian phone maker Yota Devices will start making its first dual-screen e-ink YotaPhones in Singapore. The company has signed with Hi-P, a manufacturer in the country, to have it mass-produce the devices. Yota’s COO, Lau Geckler, told us that he is also in Singapore to help set up Yota’s Asian sales office and the company’s second R&D facility. Its original R&D center is in Finland, and it has development teams in Russia and the U.S., he said. The company is now hiring mainly sales and marketing staff for Asia and in the U.S. to add to the 55 people it has in its headquarters in Russia, which take care of software development and design. Geckler, who joined Yota last August, said the company has been on an aggressive hiring spree, and that the team has grown from 15 when he joined to its current size. When I met him, he showed me the YotaPhone. The charger was hastily bound to the phone by a rubber band, and he apologized, noting that it is still in prototype form, but the company expects to iron out all those kinks together with Hi-P here, as it takes it to mass production. He wouldn’t talk of how many phones they had committed to make here, but I get the feeling that once things ramp up, Yota could be free to move the process to a cheaper location in China, perhaps. Geckler said that the company intends to own as much of the manufacturing process’ IP as possible. Still, it won’t be for a while. He said that Yota isn’t looking to sign on more manufacturing partners for now, and it is keen to first start selling in Russia, before moving into Asian markets, particularly Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and Hong Kong, where interest has been high. Japanese users, in particular, tend to hold both e-ink e-reader devices and smartphones, so the product seems fit for them, he added. Yota was a spin-off of Russian operator, Yota, in December 2011. Yota recently merged with Megafon,?a fellow operator in the country. Back in Russia, Yota also sells LTE modems, routers and dongles. It’s sold 3 million of these devices so far, and last year sold a million.

Northeastern Junior College to host "An Evening in Tuscany" at Hope Scholarship Gala

STERLING?? Northeastern Junior College is well into planning for its annual Hope Scholarship Gala, Saturday, June 1.

Last year, the college took a break from its annual gala and instead offered Club 1941. Individuals, groups and businesses were able to buy a year and join the club to show their support of the scholarship.

Gail LaForce, executive director of the NJC Foundation, told the Advisory Council last week that while Club 1941 was ?very successful, it didn't tap into the same group of people that are attending the gala, necessarily.?

?It was very positive -- we had a lot of alumni from far away give money -- but we don't want to lose our local population's interest either.?

This year's theme will be ?An Evening in Tuscany? and the gala will be held at Plainsman Grill.

LaForce said they looked at having the event on the main campus; it has been held at the Bank of Colorado Events Center in the past. However the areas they looked at holding it were already taken by other events, like the State FFA Convention.

She noted that the facility has undergone some changes recently. NJC received money from a donor that allowed them to remove the old tennis courts, backfill the pool and cover it with cement. They're getting ready to make the former pool area usable with a 90 by 120 foot party tent set up there for the gala.

The college is focusing on making the facility a place where people will want to hold banquets, which is why they decided to fill in the pool and make it a patio area.

While giving an update on the Plainsman Grill, Tyler Kelsch, vice president of finance, talked about the patio, noting that ?looking at it and layouts, assuming that we get it the way that we want it, that can be a venue up to about 400 people.?

At this point the Foundation isn't sure how many people they will be able to handle at the gala. In the past, the most they've ever had was 500 people.

?We will probably not be able to have that many, but it will just depend on what we can make fit,? LaForce said.

Invitations to purchase tickets for the event will be going out by the end of February. There are seven corporations who have purchased tickets for every year of the gala, they will be the first to be invited and then they'll move on to other corporations and individuals.

In other business, LaForce announced that the Hoffman Honors House was sold earlier this month.

?Because of the market we were unable to sell it for what we wanted,? she said. ?But on the other hand, it had been up for sale since 2009 and it just became time to see what we could do.?

NJC received two cash offers. One was for $115,000 and after fees and all was said and done the Foundation received a check for $108,403.

The decision to sell was made in November 2009 and the honors students were moved to GRB Residence Hall.

?Five issues were identified that were going to probably preclude us from continuing to use it for our honors students,? LaForce said.

Those issues included lack of security, ongoing maintenance problems, financial problems, function ? inefficient design for the students and management costs.

It was proposed that when the house was sold the proceeds would be used to establish an endowment for honors scholarships and honors program trips.

Right now, there is an honors scholarship fund setup that money can be taken out of; this could help pay for larger trips.

As an example of one of these trips, LaForce mentioned one year when students went to Chicago. They knew what they were going to do when they got there, things that matched some of the students' interests and challenged them.

?Those trips are very difficult and costly, obviously, so I don't know that that will happen every year, but on the years it can happen it is certainly an enriching opportunity,? she said.

Additionally, LaForce provided information about a gift of land located in Fort Morgan, given to the college by a former student, Steve Shirley. The transaction took place December 2012.

She said land, located at 16098 County Road R, is an empty field, with the back abutted by a railroad track.

?We went out and looked at it to see what the problems would be, if there's something that would include the ability to sell,? LaForce said. ?We hired a lawyer to check into things for us to make sure we weren't getting land that we would never be able to get rid of.

The appraisal for the land was $25,000.

At the end of the meeting the Advisory Council went into an executive session to discuss matters related to the purchase of property for public purposes or the sale of property at competitive bidding.

iPhone 4, 6.1 Siri/Weird Safe Mode Thing?

Okay, So I'm quite sad. I'm running iOS 6.1 on my (evasi0n) Jailbroken iPhone 4, and after extensive research, decided on trying out Siri using the package "Siri for iOS 6.x" from IHacksRepo. I followed a tutorial on how to get that working, that was no problem whatsoever, and I had Siri working. After a few days, I decided I want to get rid of Siri and try out NowNow, So I went and deleted the certificate/package from Cydia. After removing, Cydia prompted me to Reboot my device, which I did, and come to find out that my iPhone decides to take forever to boot up. It sticks at the Apple Logo, and since I have f.lux also installed, I could see that it's tinted. After about 15-45 minutes, it finally reboots, but in sort of a Safe Mode, but not exactly. I tried doing the reboot while disabling the MobileSubstrate by holding down the Up Volume Key while doing a hard Reboot, but it still takes a very long time for my iPhone to Reboot, and it still goes into the weird Safe Mode thing. I gave up and decided to just stay in the weird Safe Mode, but I soon found the disadvantages. It acts like I have a tethered jailbreak, as it won't let me open Cydia, any jailbroken apps, Safari, Calender, and won't finish downloading updates from the Apple App Store. None of the tweaks are active from Cydia (obviously), but what intrigued me is that my "ColorKeyboard" seemed to be the only tweak active. I found this quite frustrating, so I scavenged the web for a solution without restoring my iPhone, and found out that the problem is located withing the Springboard.plst file, in the location "System/Library/LaunchDaemons" or something like that. The thread I was on offered a download of a clean Springboard.plst file, which I downloaded but not installed yet. I read that, in the same directory, there existed a Springboard.bak file, which essentially is a backup. I looked, but to no avail, and ended up replacing the Springboard file with the one from the thread, using iFunBox. I rebooted again, waited painfully long for my phone to boot back up, and found out that that solution didn't work out either. I am stumped, as I do not want to restore my phone, but will if it's the only solution. Can anyone help me out?

Swiss say U.S. not in touch over Heinz insider trading case

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss authorities said on Monday they have not yet been asked to help a U.S. investigation into alleged insider trading in call options of H.J. Heinz Co the day before the company announced it would be sold, even though a Zurich account is at the heart of the matter.

U.S. securities regulators filed suit on Friday against as-yet-unidentified traders in Heinz options alleging they traded on inside information before the company made public the deal to be bought for $23 billion by an investor group made up of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc and Brazil's 3G Capital Partners.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said in a statement on Friday it had obtained "an emergency court order to freeze assets in a Zurich, Switzerland-based trading account that was used to reap more than $1.7 million from trading in advance of yesterday's public announcement about the acquisition of H.J. Heinz Company."

The order from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York freezes the traders' assets and prohibits them from destroying any evidence, the SEC statement said.

SEC spokesman John Nester said on Monday that the assets concerned had been frozen in the United States, not Switzerland, though the "beneficial owners" were those allegedly behind the Swiss account. He did not respond immediately when asked if the U.S. authorities were in contact with their Swiss counterparts.

With the assets frozen, the SEC would have had no immediate need for Swiss assistance in the case, although it eventually may need help to identify the account holders.

Rainer Borer, a spokesman for the Swiss financial markets watchdog known as FINMA, said a U.S. court cannot by itself freeze assets in an account of a bank operating in Switzerland.

"For that, it has to ask for legal or administrative assistance," he told Reuters. "Up to now, FINMA has not received a U.S. request for administrative assistance in the mentioned case of potential insider trading."

Justice ministry spokesman Folco Galli said the ministry had not received an official request for legal assistance either.

"Either a request for administrative or legal assistance would be necessary because a U.S. court cannot enforce a coercive measure in Switzerland," he said.

U.S. bank Goldman Sachs has said it is co-operating with the SEC probe. The SEC suit filed Friday refers to the account in Switzerland as the "GS Account.

Heinz had no comment, Michael Mullen, a company spokesman, said by email. Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital likewise declined to comment, said Gemma Hart, a spokeswoman for the investor group.

BlackBerry Z10 set for February 25th launch in India

A clever invitation from BlackBerry (see the video below) announces that the new BlackBerry Z10 will be launched in India on February 25th. BlackBerry still has a big following in the country, and the Canadian manufacturer has opened up BlackBerry Stores in India. These openings are so big, Bollywood stars come out to see and be seen. For a big time launch, BlackBerry had to turn to a unique invitation, so it sent out coffee cups with a secret message that could only be seen by pouring in a steaming hot beverage. The information revealed the February 25th launch date for the Z10 in India, although carrier info and pricing will apparently have to wait until we get even closer to the launch than we are now.

As well as BlackBerry does in India, the big test will come next month when BlackBerry is expected to release the BlackBerry Z10 in the United States. T-Mobile has made some noise about being first to launch the phone, but right now none of the major carriers has uttered anything close to a set launch date.

Amid a flurry of PS4 rumours, latest reports have suggested that, as well as hosting a new touchpad interface, the upcoming PS4 controller will feature integrated PlayStation Move motion gaming options.

With PS4 controller images hitting the web earlier today, latest reports have suggested that the light strip shown atop the peripheral?s upper will see Sony?s current PlayStation Move wands made redundant by integrated inclusion within the PS4 controller.

Adding to the growing speculation ahead of the upcoming February 20 PS4 release date announcement, it has been claimed that the repeatedly mooted PS4 controller will feature ?a combination of motion control, touch and traditional analogue buttons.?

According to gaming outlet CVG, previous reports of each PS4 console coming paired with a ?dual-camera? advancement on the current PlayStation Eye are set to ring true, with next-gen PlayStation gamers pairing the camera toting peripheral with a PS4 controller that plays host to inbuilt PlayStation Move motion gaming capabilities.

?Incorporating Move functionality into every single PlayStation 4 controller will, hopefully, put an end to its mass-market neglect, with developers able to take advantage of its standardisation by incorporating motion support into every single game,? the latest reports have suggested.

Citing unnamed studio sources in suggesting the controller?s light bar will change colour like current Move controls, the reports added: ?With the PS4 controller, Move's orb has spread into a LED strip placed across the top of the pad.?

Seemingly set to offer improved, more accurate, motion gaming options, the upcoming PS4 controller will also feature a new touchpad interface in place of the current Start and Select buttons, a feature that will be akin to the rear panel of the PS Vita.

Kicking off interest in the PS4 controller earlier this month, industry magazine Edge stated: ?Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing Dualshock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons.?

Further reports added that the incoming touchpad ?will be a two-point multi-touch capable ?pad? similar to the one on the back of the Vita.?

Requiring camera to track the light-emitting PlayStation Move enabled motion gaming features, the PS4 controller will reportedly by paired with a newly revised PlayStation Eye ?dual-camera? that will Microsoft?s Kinect offering.

With the PlayStation 4 camera said to incorporate a pair of wide-angle cameras, each of which features a HD capable 1280 x 720p image resolution, a collection of four 48 Khz microphones are also set to be included, allowing gamers to control the console via voice commands.

Whilst it is believed the add-on will enable the PS4 to automatically recognise gamers and log them in to their specific accounts without prompting, recent reports have suggested that ?currently it?s not clear if this device will support body tracking in the future as Kinect, but it?s almost sure that it will be bundled with every Orbis (PS4) system.?

Why good hair matters: First animal model of recent human evolution reveals that mutation for thick hair does much more

Feb. 14, 2013 ? The first animal model of recent human evolution reveals that a single mutation produced several traits common in East Asian peoples, from thicker hair to denser sweat glands, an international team of researchers reports.

The team, led by researchers from Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital, Fudan University and University College London, also modeled the spread of the gene mutation across Asia and North America, concluding that it most likely arose about 30,000 years ago in what is today central China. The findings are reported in the cover story of the Feb. 14 issue of Cell.

"This interdisciplinary approach yields unique insight into the generation of adaptive variation among modern humans," said Pardis Sabeti, associate professor in the Center for Systems Biology and Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, and one of the paper's senior authors.

"This paper tells a story about human evolution in three parts," said Cliff Tabin, head of the HMS Department of Genetics and co-senior author. "The mouse model links multiple traits to a single mutation, the related association study finds these traits in humans, and computer models tell us where and when the mutation likely arose and spread."

Previous research in Sabeti's lab had identified the mutation as a strong candidate for positive selection. That is, evidence within the genetic code suggested the mutant gene conferred an evolutionary advantage, though what advantage was unclear.

The mutation was found in a gene for ectodysplasin receptor, or EDAR, part of a signaling pathway known to play a key role in the development of hair, sweat glands and other skin features. While human populations in Africa and Europe had one, ancestral, version of the gene, most East Asians had a derived variant, EDARV370A, which studies had linked to thicker scalp hair and an altered tooth shape in humans.

The ectodysplasin pathway is highly conserved across vertebrates -- the same genes do the same thing in humans and mice and zebrafish. For that reason, and because its effects on skin, hair and scales can be observed directly, it is widely studied.

This evolutionary conservation led Yana Kamberov, one of two first authors on the paper, to reason that EDARV370A would exert similar biological effects in an animal model as in humans. The HMS research fellow in genetics developed a mouse model with the exact mutation of EDARV370A -- a difference of one DNA letter from the original, or wild-type, population. That mouse manifested thicker hair, more densely branched mammary glands and an increased number of eccrine, or sweat, glands.

"This not only directly pointed us to the subset of organs and tissues that were sensitive to the mutation, but also gave us the key biological evidence that EDARV370A could have been acted on by natural selection," Kamberov said.

The findings prompted the team to look for similar traits in human populations. When co-first author Sijia Wang and the team including collaborators at Fudan examined the fingertips of Chinese volunteers at colleges and farming villages, they found that the sweat glands of Han Chinese, who carry the derived variant of the gene, were packed about 15 percent more densely than those of a control population with the ancestral variant.

At the same time, Wang and the team including collaborators at University College London were working to zero in on when and where the mutation arose. Computer models suggested that the derived variant of the gene emerged in central China between 13,175 and 39,575 years ago, with a median estimate of 30,925 years. Researchers concluded the derived variant is at least 15,000 years old, predating the migration from Asia by Native Americans, who also carry the mutation.

That time span suggests that different traits could have been under selection at different times. The mutation's many effects, known as pleiotropy, only complicate the question. If changes to the sweat glands conferred an advantage in new climates -- one of the theories the researchers plan to explore further -- changes to hair and to mammary glands could have conferred other advantages at other times.

Not all of these advantages need be direct effects on fitness. "When Pardis started this work, I would not have predicted that a gene that makes good hair would top of a list of mutations that confer evolutionary advantage among humans," said Bruce Morgan, HMS associate professor of dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-senior author on the paper. "However, in this case 'good hair' may have a biological meaning because it is genetically linked to a physiologically adaptive trait like increased sweating capacity. A cultural preference for a physically obvious trait like hair type could have arisen because individuals with it were more successful, and this would help increase selection on the new variant."

"That (pleiotropy) makes it harder for us to make a guess," Wang said. "If there were only one associated trait, we could say with confidence that's where the selective advantage comes from. But with many traits, we don't know which is the target of selection, and which are just hitchhiking." Wang intends to focus on that question in his new role, as a Max Planck independent research group leader in dermatogenomics at Chinese Academy of Sciences -- Max Planck Partner Institute for Computational Biology in Shanghai.

By leveraging the power of diverse fields, the team is piecing together the foundation for understanding how selected mutations like EDARV370A have impacted human diversity. But, they say, this is only the beginning.

"These findings point to what mutations, when, where and how," said Daniel Lieberman, a professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University and a co-senior author on the study. "We still want to know why."
