Grenada in the Caribbean presents a variety of exciting and relaxing experiences. The island is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. Thanks to affordability, friendly people and more exposure, many people are choosing Grenada as their port of call in the West Indies. Here are 8 things to love about Grenada.
1. Breath-taking Beaches
One of the best reasons for visiting Grenada is that some of the most incredible beaches can be found here. The sea gently laps the shores onto the same beautiful white sand beaches that visitors to the Caribbean love so much.
2. Friendly people
Grenadians are friendly, approachable and polite. If you're spending any time on the island, be sure to mingle with the locals otherwise you'll miss out. With a population of 90,000, the island has the largest concentration of people around the St George's area. Tip: Don't mention the 1983 revolution.
3. Fresh produce
The soil on Grenada is very fertile and you'll see a wide range of fruits and vegetables that are grown on the island. Be sure to make the most of the exposure to them and take fresh fruit juices, vegetables and try as many exotic fruits are you can.
4. Spices
Prior to the last big hurricane, Grenada was the 2nd biggest exporter of nutmeg in the world. You can visit one of the three nutmeg processing plants if you'd like to see what this entails. You'll also come across cinnamon, turmeric, clove and allspice.
5. Waterfalls
If sandy beaches and snorkelling doesn't do it for you then head inland to hike some of the Caribbean's prettiest waterfalls. Grenada has several and they are all something to see. Mt Carmel is in many people's opinion the prettiest.
6. Birds
Even if you're not really a birdwatcher, keep an eye out. There are over 100 different birds on the island, including several species of hummingbirds, boobies, terns and even vultures. You'll get some good wildlife photo opportunities by being patient and still.
7. Adventure
There are plenty of adventurous activities to take part in. You can dive in the Underwater Sculpture Park, take a river tube ride through some rapids or hop onto a fisherman's boat for the ride over to beautiful Sandy Island.
8. Local food
In addition to a strong African slant, there's also an East Indian influence on the island with curried goat, roti's and doubles. Be sure to try the local dish of oildown. There are also plenty of opportunities to try the multitude of local fish and seafood.
9. Beautiful countryside
Don't stay in your hotel, get out and about. The scenery is beautiful and well worth a look. Hiring a car is easy and affordable. You'll just need to bring along your driving license. Remember that the road system means that cars travel on the left.
10. Whales and Dolphins
If you take a day trip out, there's no guarantee that you'll see whales, but you will most probably see dolphins. Ask at your hotel reception desk about how you can get onto a trip.
Grenada has got a lot on offer and it's well worth a visit.
