A look at the burning issues for NFL teams as they head into training camp

Image: Jerry JonesAP

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones speaks to reporters during practice at Cowboys Stadium on May 30.

Jelisa Castrodale

Editor's note: Jelisa Castrodale is taking her own particular look at all 32 NFL teams as they head into training camps. Half the teams now, half next week.

Five and a half months have passed since Ahmad Bradshaw left his buttprint in the Lucas Oil end zone, giving the New York Giants a 21-17 Super Bowl lead.? The Giants held on for 57 seconds and another season ended with commemorative T-shirts in one locker room, excuses in the other, and an angry supermodel somewhere in the luxury boxes.

So after being pigskin-starved since the beginning of February, Football Christmas is almost here! NFL training camps are scheduled to open anywhere between July 9 (for Buffalo's rookies) and July 29 (for Oakland and anyone on the Cowboys who hasn't assaulted his own mom).

A look at key issues for each team as they pack up their training gear and teddy bears and head to camp. We've waited long enough, let's get to it.

Arizona Cardinals
Kevin Kolb and John Skelton will face off for the starting quarterback slot and both options are so terrible, it's like trying to decide on a favorite skin rash. What's more remarkable than Kolb somehow trading his 58.5 percent completion percentage in Philly (where he had 11 TDs and 14 INTs in three seasons) for a $65 million deal in Arizona is the fact that, statistically, Matt Leinart looks better than either of them. That sound you just heard was coach Ken Whisenhunt dry heaving.

Atlanta Falcons
What do Barney Fife's gun and the Falcons' postseasons have in common? They can't get past one round. (If you're, like, 74 years old, you just laughed so hard).

Baltimore Ravens
Under first-year defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, the Ravens were again a top-three defense, holding opponents to 16.6 points and 288.9 yards per game. Pagano has now inherited the collection of leftovers and ligaments that used to be the Indianapolis Colts, so it will be interesting to see how Baltimore's consistently run-stuffing defense changes ? or doesn't ? under newly promoted defensive coordinator Dean Pees. Also, Dean Pees is both a name and a complete sentence.

Buffalo Bills
Despite signing defensive end Mario Williams, locking down No. 1 receiver/end zone charades player Stevie Jones and hiring a new quarterbacks coach to bring some consistency to Ryan Fitzpatrick's right arm, going into camp, the Buffalo media is focusing on the fact that no one on the team has been arrested since 2009. No, really.

Carolina Panthers
The Panthers hope to build on the promise Cam Newton showed as Rookie of the Year, where he and a recharged WR Steve Smith put the Cats at fifth in the league in points scored and seventh in yards. Also, the team changed their logo in the offseason, trading the old Panther for one that is "more aggressive and contemporary," graphic designer talk for "we shaved its eyebrows off." That's obviously worth an extra two wins.

Chicago Bears
Brian Urlacher said that this season ? and this roster ? gives the Bears the "best chance [they've] had to win it" in his 12 years wearing a stylized C over his ears. Earl Bennett says they're the best team in the NFC North, which are big words coming from a dude who has 17 career starts.

Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals would like to remind everyone they haven't had an arrest this week either.

Cleveland Browns
Cleveland is coming off a 4-12 season, when they ranked 29th in offense, 30th in points scored (13.6) and 29th in yards per game (288). The only Browns-related offensive play I remember is the one where Pittsburgh's James Harrison used Colt McCoy as a lawn dart. So who will be the starting QB at the end of camp: McCoy or this year's winner of the Chris Weinke award, 28-year-old rookie Brandon Weeden? (My money's on B-Weed. Also, if you pass me your money, I won't use the phrase 'B-Weed' again).

Dallas Cowboys
A month ago, Dez Bryant was expected to slip past Miles Austin and become the team's top receiver. Owner/Restylane "After" picture Jerry Jones said that Bryant "certainly is different as far as his maturity ? than when he got here," which proves Jerry shouldn't add "soothsayer" to his LinkedIn profile.

Instead, they might lose Bryant to a Goodell-mandated time out, after already losing Laurent Robinson ? last year's unexpected success story ? to Jacksonville. I'm imagining Jerry sitting in his office, pressing both sides of his forehead in an attempt to move some part of his face into an expression of concern.

Denver Broncos
There are vampire movies that don't focus on one person's neck the way we'll all stare at Peyton Manning's.

Detroit Lions
When asked who's the better fantasy option, Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald suggested that owners should snag Detroit's Calvin Johnson instead of him. "Megatron and Matthew Stafford have a great connection up there in Detroit," Fitzgerald said, noting Arizona had "some questions right now." He's right: Stafford passed for over 5,000 yards last season, which led to a career year from Johnso ? hey, seriously, can someone go check on Ken Whisenhunt?

Green Bay Packers
More accurately, the G-een ?ay Packe-s, since they don't have an RB. On top of that, their defense couldn't stop a pass from a drunken Kardashian, but does that matter? Not unless Aaron Rodgers arm snaps off, not when he has a bazillion receiving options and is coming off a 45 TD, 6 INT season that set a record for single-season passer rating (122.5).

Houston Texans
Despite missing time with a bum hamstring, Arian Foster still led the Texans in rushing and finished one catch behind TE Owen Daniels on the receiving leaders list. Last week, he tweeted he'd converted to veganism, which shouldn't be a problem until Week 12, when he's devoured by Ndamukong Suh. (CARNIVORE > HERBIVORE).

Jacksonville Jaguars
A 5-11 season, last in the league in total offense and passing offense, and Blaine Gabbert sprawled at the bottom of most statistical categories: have the Jags considered removing their logo's eyebrows?

Indianapolis Colts
The last time this many Colts left the city at once, a fleet of Mayflower trucks were involved (SORRY BALTIMORE).? Day One at camp will just involve new coach Chuck Pagano passing out Sharpies and a roll of "Hello, My Name Is ?" stickers. Andrew Luck will get two: one for himself and one for that stack of comparisons to Peyton's rookie season.

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are a Matt Cassel injury from adding "The Brady Quinn Era" to their team history.? After releasing Tyler Palko, third on the depth chart is a Joe Montana jersey they bought on eBay. GENTLY USED!

We'll be back next week to cover Miami through Washington and ? aw, hell, Ken Whisenhunt just shaved his own eyebrows off.

Morocco Stays Renewable Energy Course Amidst Arab Spring ...

?

As longstanding ruling regimes shake and fall around them, Moroccans to date have been able to steer a moderate, comparatively peaceful course of socio-political change that?s seen the establishment of a new constitution based on modern pluralist democratic principles tolerant of social, political, and religious diversity. Encouragingly, with regard to energy policy, that?s included moving forward with a progressive, proactive national renewable energy and energy efficiency strategy that includes renewable energy sources meeting 42% of electricity demand by 2020.

The ramifications of working to reach that goal are deep and far-reaching. In doing so, Morocco?s government believes it can steer a new course of socio-economic development that will yield big, long-lasting dividends not only in terms of energy security and self-reliance, but in terms of social equity, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability.

In a July 12 interview, the director of Morocco?s new renewable energy agency, Agence Nationale pour le Developpement des Energies Renouvelables et de l?Efficacite Energetique (ADEREE), Sa?d Mouline, laid out in more detail the aims, underpinnings, and means by which Morocco is working to realize its renewable energy and energy efficiency goals. Taken at face value, they appear ambitious and impressive, yet also practicable.
?

?

At present, some 95% of Morocco?s total energy demand is met by imports, primarily of oil, coal and natural gas, Mouline told CleanTechnica. That?s been a big drain on the country?s balance of trade and foreign exchange reserves, which has only surged higher with the run-up in petroleum prices that began around the mid-2000s. The social, political, and environmental ramifications associated with its dependence on fossil fuel imports compound the problems associated with fossil fuel dependence, he noted.

On the other hand, the cost of electricity from renewables ? wind and solar, in particular ? is already at or very near parity with grid power from fossil fuel power plants. Newly installed wind power is already cost-competitive with conventional electricity from Morocco?s grid, and new solar power is nearly there, as costs have declined sharply in the past few years, Mouline pointed out, and that?s just looking at renewables from a purely hard and narrow dollars-and-cents perspective.

The cost of electricity for individual consumers in Morocco is based on a sliding scale, Mouline explained: 7 US cents/kWh for the first 100kWh moving up to 16-17 cents per kWh if you consume more than 400kWh per month, ?so the heavy users pay proportionally higher.? Many Moroccan homes, he added, consume very little electricity as compared to their European counterparts (and?much less than US residents) ??less than 400kWh per month.

There?s another sliding scale of electricity billing for industry. Rather than being linked to consumption, it?s linked to time-of-day power consumption, he continued. For commercial/industrial consumers, electricity rates range from 7 cents to 10 cents per kWh.

Morocco believes developing its considerable renewable energy resources and enhancing energy efficiency can go a long way towards addressing all these interrelated issues, Mouline said, even to the extent, in terms of the energy sector, of transforming the nation from a fossil fuel importer to a ?green? energy exporter to Europe.

Morocco?s renewable energy and green economy ambitions don?t stop there, however. In addition to investing in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects and infrastructure on both the small and large scale, Morocco is marshaling its own resources while working internationally with other governments, development organizations, and foreign companies in establishing not only the infrastructure, but also the critical legal framework and educational and vocational training capacity, to build a ?green? energy economic sector that it projects will create some 50,000 new jobs by 2020.

The environmental benefits aren?t being overlooked, either, Mouline continued, noting that Morocco has a national CO2 emissions monitoring authority that enables renewable energy project owners to qualify for UN Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) carbon offset credits. The owner of Morocco?s first wind power project, a 60-MW wind farm in south-central Morocco, was able to sell CDM credits at $13 per metric ton for every metric ton avoided. More impressively, all 300-MW of wind power capacity up and running in Morocco today has qualified for CDM carbon offset credits.

Mouline acknowledged the challenges and magnitude of change required to realize the country?s renewable energy/energy efficiency strategy goals.

?It?s a drastic change. We managed to convince the government and others to enact the renewable energy/energy efficiency policy by convincing them it?s time to have a new strategy because of our resources and our needs. It?s not only a matter of energy capacity and production, but a matter of energy independence, which is very important today, as well as protecting the environment and stimulating economic and jobs growth.?

Pistorius set for long-awaited Olympic debut

GEMONA, Italy (AP) ? Even when he's looking at photos of his bleeding and blistered leg stumps, Oscar Pistorius smiles.

And with his Olympic debut approaching, it's easy to understand why.

Pistorius, whose legs were amputated below the knee when he was a baby, is set to make history by running ? yes, running ? in the London Olympics. He will be the first amputee athlete to compete at the Olympics, and his journey has been long and rife with hurdles.

When he finally got word earlier this month that he had a place on South Africa's team ? his was the last name of 125 penciled in ? his first reaction was relief. Then came utter joy.

"I think I woke up the next morning with cramps in my cheeks. I was smiling in my sleep," Pistorius said during a recent interview at his training base in northeastern Italy. "You also realize very quickly ... it's the London Olympics and I need to perform. Very stressful.

"You've made the entrance to write the test, but now the test is in front of you," he said.

The test comes Aug. 4, the opening day of the 400-meter heats.

The "Blade Runner," as he is known, runs with carbon-fiber blades that often cause blisters and rub his stumps raw. Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect, and lost his legs at 11 months. It never stopped him from playing sports ? even rugby ? with prosthetics.

But his running prosthetics led to years of controversy. Already a Paralympic gold medalist, Pistorius was initially banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage.

In 2008, however, the Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared him to compete. Last year, he ran on South Africa's 4x400 relay team at the 2011 world championships, and though he sat out the final, he won a silver medal because he competed in the heats.

Pistorius is aware that not everyone is convinced he should compete at all.

"There will always be people who will debate, and there will always be a journalist willing to write an opinion and a certain angle to a story," Pistorius said. "There will always be someone who wants to create a name for himself, and if he's given that platform he'll take it and argue that wet is dry and green is red. There are always those types of people.

"One of the reasons for doing the tests was proving that I'm in a sport and have the ability to run due to my own talent and hard work and sacrifices, and that was important for me. Looking back at that, I'm happy that we went through it."

American LaShawn Merritt, the defending Olympic champion in the 400, looks forward to racing against the 25-year-old Pistorius.

"I've told him how much respect I have for him and the drive he has, to want to do something and take the action to work hard and get to where he wants to be," Merritt said. "The dream of his was to be able to run with the able-bodied athletes, and he knew what he had to do to make that happen, time-wise, and he worked his butt off to get it. He's here now."

Pistorius and his team have been based in Gemona for the last two European seasons after the mayor asked him if he'd consider training there to promote the town, located near the Italian Alps, just across the mountains from Austria.

Pistorius said he needed a track, ideally with the same Mondo surface as London's Olympic Stadium.

It was built for him.

Running lap after lap on his Cheetah Flex-Foot blades, Pistorius has now focused on reaching the 400 semifinals ? as he did at the worlds in South Korea last year. He's also hoping to run the sub-45-second time that he and his coach, Ampie Louw, are certain he can achieve. His best time, so far, is 45.07.

"We're going to race the heat. Oscar's got no choice," Louw said.

Pistorius' track in Italy is normally sun-drenched; on this day, it's just drenched.

In pouring rain, Pistorius goes through his routine and then runs 150-meter splits. Louw whistles from the end of the home straightaway and he sets off, pounding around the bend and down the track. Water splashes out from under his blades.

Good preparation for London, his agent, Peet van Zyl, says with a smile.

So it's in Gemona that Pistorius will put the final pieces in place for his high-profile ? maybe the highest profile ? debut at the Olympics.

"There's a big difference in qualifying for the games and being at the top," Pistorius said. "I'm going to go there to do my best and I'll be content if I can run close to my personal best, and hopefully a personal best. I'll go with my 'A' game and take my fight with me and see how well I'll do."

On Tuesday, Pistorius finished second, in 46.56 seconds, in the 400 at his final Olympic warm-up race in Lignano, Italy, well behind Calvin Smith of the United States in 45.52.

"My time wasn't among the best. But I'm good physically and mentally," Pistorius said afterward. "I've used a lot of energy in these past few days, both in training and with the media because of my participation in the Olympics."

In his down time, he's already becoming a star.

At the small hotel where he lives, Pistorius gets a lunchtime surprise.

He smiles when the family that runs the hotel gives him a cake decorated with the five Olympic rings. He smiles when he poses for pictures with them. He even smiles when he displays pictures on his cell phone of his legs, bleeding and raw, after the recent African championships.

He'll almost certainly have a more serious expression on his face when he steps onto the track in London.

And no matter the outcome, he'll surely be smiling after finally getting the chance to achieve his Olympic dream.

President Barack Obama begins two-day Florida campaign swing

President Barack Obama returns to the Sunshine State today for the start of a two-day campaign tour to talk tax cuts and debt reduction.

He will stop in Jacksonville and West Palm Beach today and then head to Fort Myers and Orlando on Friday, according to his campaign.

On taxes, Obama will repeat his call for extending "middle-class" tax breaks for families making less than $250,000, or $200,000 for individuals ? basically everyone but the top 2 percent of Americans. Republican Mitt Romney supports extending the cuts for all Americans.

"He will discuss his plan to restore middle-class security by paying down our debt in a balanced way that ensures everyone pays their fair share and still invests in the things we need to create jobs and grow our economy over the long term," said a statement issued by Obama's campaign earlier this week.

He's also going to talk about reducing the nation's $16 trillion debt by making the case that taxing those earning more than $250,000 a year will push the debt down over the next decade.

Most economists believe that a mix of tax hikes and spending cuts are needed to cut the debt significantly. A special commission Obama appointed soon after taking office in January 2009 recommended such an approach, but Obama and congressional leaders from both parties largely ignored the panel's advice.

With Florida up for grabs in November, Obama and Romney are spending millions of dollars in television ads and making frequent campaign stops around the state.

A Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald/Bay News 9 poll released last week showed 46 percent of likely Florida voters backing Obama, 45 percent supporting Romney and 2 percent were behind Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson. Only 7 percent are undecided.

In a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ben LaBolt, an Obama campaign spokesman, dismissed recent polls.

They expect the race in the nation's biggest battleground state to go down to the wire, as it has in every presidential contest in the past two decades.

"We have no expectation that either candidate will get to the point of 10 points up or down,'' LaBolt said.

"We think this will be close and competitive right up until the election and that's why we're building the largest grass roots campaign in history," said Wasserman Schultz.

That may explain why Obama's campaign trip to Florida will include Jacksonville, where he lost narrowly in 2008, and to Lee and Collier counties, where he lost badly before winning the state with a 2.5 percentage point margin.

The president plans to drop by Century Village of West Palm Beach, the senior citizen retirement haven that remains a reliable but shrinking stronghold of Democratic senior citizens.
