New generation of virtual humans helping to train psychologists

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? New technology has led to the creation of virtual humans who can interact with therapists via a computer screen and realistically mimic the symptoms of a patient with clinical psychological disorders, according to new research presented at the American Psychological Association's 120th Annual Convention.

"As this technology continues to improve, it will have a significant impact on how clinical training is conducted in psychology and medicine," said psychologist and virtual reality technology expert Albert "Skip" Rizzo, PhD, who demonstrated recent advancements in virtual reality for use in psychology.

Virtual humans can now be highly interactive, artificially intelligent and capable of carrying on a conversation with real humans, according to Rizzo, a research scientist at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies. "This has set the stage for the 'birth' of intelligent virtual humans to be used in clinical training settings," he said.

Rizzo showed videos of clinical psychiatry trainees engaging with virtual patients called "Justin" and "Justina." Justin is a 16-year-old with a conduct disorder who is being forced by his family to participate in therapy. Justina, the second and more advanced iteration of this technology, is a sexual assault victim who was designed to have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In an initial test, 15 psychiatry residents, of whom six were women, were asked to perform a 15-minute interaction with Justina. Video of one such interaction shows a resident taking an initial history by asking a variety of questions. Programmed with speech recognition software, Justina responds to the questions and the resident is able to make a preliminary diagnosis.

Rizzo's virtual reality laboratory is working on the next generation of virtual patients using information from this and related user tests, and will further modify the characters for military clinical training, which the U.S. Department of Defense is funding, he said. Some future patients that are in development are virtual veterans with depression and suicidal thoughts, for use in training clinicians and other military personnel how to recognize the risk for suicide or violence.

In the long term, Rizzo said he hopes to create a comprehensive computer training module that has a diverse library of virtual patients with numerous "diagnoses" for use by psychiatric and psychology educators and trainees. Currently, psychology and psychiatry students are trained by role-playing with other students or their supervisors to gain experience to treat patients. They then engage in supervised on-the-job training with real patients to complete their degrees. "Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of live standardized 'actor' patients who are commonly used in medical programs, so we see this technology as offering a credible option for clinical psychology training," he said. "What's so useful about this technology is novice clinicians can gain exposure to the presentation of a variety of clinical conditions in a safe and effective environment before interacting with actual patients. In addition, virtual patients are more versatile and can be available anytime, anywhere. All you need is a computer."

Asian shares, euro fall as ECB delays action

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares and the euro fell on Friday as investors shunned risk after the European Central Bank took no immediate action and only hinted at future steps to tackle the euro zone's fiscal woes, following similar inaction from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

European stocks were likely to consolidate, and U.S. stock futures signalled a flat Wall Street start. Financial spreadbetters called the main indexes in London, Paris and Frankfurt to open between a 0.1 percent rise and a 0.1 percent drop.

Key U.S. non-farm payrolls data for July is due at 1230 GMT, with job creation below the 100,000 forecast likely to boost hopes the Fed, which on Wednesday stood pat with its current monetary policy, would embark on further easing as early as next month.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slipped 1.1 percent after global stocks tumbled on Thursday, but was set for a weekly gain of about 0.9 percent.

The index's materials sector slumped nearly 2 percent as miners dragged Australian shares lower to rank among the worst performers in Asia with a 1 percent drop.

"One would expect the risk-off adjustment would likely be involved in the selling of stocks such as miners, whose revenue strengths are more vulnerable to on-going problems in Europe, and the retrenchment of world confidence and so forth," said Ric Spooner, market strategist at CMC Markets, of Australian stocks.

Japan's Nikkei stock average slid 1.2 percent, hit by heavy quarterly losses and cuts to the full-year earnings outlook from Sharp Corp and Sony Corp.

Expectations for bold action had run high since ECB President Mario Draghi vowed on Thursday last week to do whatever it took to preserve the euro.

The ECB, after keeping interest rates steady, indicated it may resume buying government bonds to drive down surging Spanish and Italian borrowing costs, but passed the baton back to euro zone governments by saying they must act first.

But Draghi said the ECB would consider other "non-standard" measures, hinting at quantitative easing, and left the door open for future rate cuts by noting signs of spreading economic weakness.

"It was obviously disappointing not to get outright buying of bonds by the Fed and ECB, but it seems they will come and in the case of the ECB, could be unlimited," said Chris Weston, a dealer at IG Markets in Melbourne.

CENTRAL BANKS NOT ALMIGHTY

The euro hit all-time lows against the Australian and New Zealand dollars on Friday around A$1.1600 and around NZ$1.4950 respectively.

The single currency fell 0.1 percent against the U.S. dollar to $1.2170, not far from a one-week low of $1.21335 touched after investors digested the ECB's news on Thursday.

"Draghi kept hopes that the ECB will do what it can within the framework of a central bank and that is positive," said Kazuto Uchida, an executive officer and general manager of the global markets division at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

"But concurrently, markets were reminded of the limit to what the central bank can do for Europe's fiscal crisis. There is now risk of repercussions to having an excessive belief that monetary policy or central banks are 'almighty'."

Uchida said that the Fed, in contrast, has managed market expectations better to maintain relative stability by pricing in further easing stimulus.

The Fed said at this week's meeting that it was prepared to act if the economy deteriorated further, and economists say the U.S. central bank is buying time to lay the groundwork for further monetary easing, possibly at its September 12-13 meeting.

U.S. 10-year Treasuries in Asia clung to gains made the previous day while Japanese government bonds rallied, pushing the two-year yield down to its lowest since July 2005 at 0.085 percent.

the lack of policy moves from the ECB and the Fed reduced pressure on the Bank of Japan, which meets next week.

"There is no reason for a country where economic assessment has not changed, to take action," said Mari Iwashita, bond strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities.

Brent crude added 0.4 percent to $106.33 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures rose 0.5 percent to $87.57.

China's services industry slowed in July from June, but still fared far better than the factory sector, with the official purchasing managers' index falling to 55.6 from 56.7 and staying above a 50 reading that signals expansion.

Market jitters unsettled Asian credit markets, sending the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index wider by 4 basis points.

Kate Upton is Fat, Apparently : Hot For Writing

Kate Upton is Fat, Apparently?

Posted by Amy Allen on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

So apparently Kate Upton is fat. She?s also vulgar, lardy and ? according to Victoria?s Secret ? an ?obvious glamour girl.? Despite this, however, Upton is?carving out a multi-million pound modelling career for herself (which includes covering this year?s?Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition),?but according to her critics, this has to be a horrendous, undeserved mistake.

Kate UptonWell, according to ?thinspirational? website Skinny Gossip, it absolutely must be.?Skinny Gossip last week published an article that?described Upton as ?thick, vulgar, lazy, lardy, almost pornographic? and as having ?huge thighs, no waist, big fat floppy boobs, terrible body definition? and ?looking like a squishy brick.? Upton is likened to both a pig and a cow in the post and the title itself is ?Kate Upton is Well-Marbled.? Feeling inspired? Yeah, me neither.

The website Skinny Gossip is what?s classed as ?thinspiration.? Thinspiration is the use of ?motivational? imagery or text to inspire people to achieve or maintain thinness. While some of the material found on thinspiration sites is focussed on health and fitness, much of it seems quite harmful ? and the casual cruelty directed at Kate Upton is really at the mild end of the scale. Jezebel cites the following:

?[There are] hundreds of these [websites], full of pictures of coveted body parts, rarely with a face attached. In some cases? text is superimposed over the image ? think ?Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels? or ?Do not reward yourself with food, you?re not a dog?, but with a cutesy font that would be at home inside a child?s birthday card.?

Images featured on thinspiration sites include everything from thin runway models and celebrities to images of girls and women who are clearly unwell. Some sites also endorse behaviour typically associated with eating disorders, such as abusing laxatives or skipping meals -?Skinny Gossip?features a ?starving tip of the day.? Some sites claim to provide a safe, non-judgemental place for those suffering from eating disorders or to provide forums for those who like a slender look, but some definitely seem to slip over into what can only be seen as pro-eating disorder territory.

And this is where things get difficult. If eating disorders are mental health problems (which they are), then can a website be held responsible for encouraging the development of these disorders in a person? According to the anonymous blogger behind?Skinny Gossip, they can?t. She bristles at the suggestion that her website is pro-anorexia, stating that:

?Anorexia? is not striving for a certain look or to fit into a certain piece of clothing. It?s a mental health problem. Calling every skinny person ill doesn?t do sick people any favours.?

This is true. But the writer also states that her website is built around a community where a skinny look is preferred, ?but not at the cost of health?, and this is where I disagree. If Kate Upton responded to the venomous barbs posted about her on?Skinny Gossip by starving herself to the point of emaciation, would she then be chastised as pro-anorexia rather than lauded as thinspiration? I doubt it.

I personally think it?s important for those seeking to lose weight or improve their health to have motivation and support. But I also think there?s a line between motivation and support and sites like?Skinny Gossip?that to me have nothing to do with building a supportive community and are in fact based on animosity, cruelty and shaming. These sites slam bodies at both ends of the spectrum, along with the bodies of perfectly healthy people (like Upton), and they blur the lines between what is ? or is not ? an acceptable body weight and size.

And this, I think, is really problematic. Whilst writers on these sites are right to say that they can?t cause eating disorders, I don?t think it?s too much of a stretch to say that dishing out unveiled disgust for women?s bodies on the internet will encourage a cultural shift towards normalising disordered behaviour. At this rate, the next generation of girls (and boys) will think it normal to fixate on a certain body image, or to not eat, or to hugely criticise themselves and others. This is not a good thing.

Whilst there?s likely nothing that can be done to stop websites like?Skinny Gossip?peddling their strange brand of hate on the internet, I?d like to see people stop pretending that hateful body critiques aren?t inflicting physical, mental and emotional harm on people and where we instead really do focus on health and wellbeing. One can dream? Oh, and for the record, I think Kate Upton is absolutely gorgeous.
