Tigers and Giants to play in India

RICHMOND'S ambition to play an AFL match in India looks set to be realised, with Greater Western Sydney agreeing to play a pre-season game there against the Tigers next year.

The Tigers and Giants have agreed to play the match in Mumbai next February, most likely at the DY Patil Stadium, a state-of-the-art 60,000 seater that hosts Indian Premier League cricket matches.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale has been floating the idea for some time, but had struggled to find an AFL club willing to participate, with Essendon angling for a post-season clash.

But the Giants, coached by the lateral-thinking Kevin Sheedy, are open to the pre-season date, and see it as an opportunity to snare new fans and even players.

"If teams are a chance of winning a premiership I can understand their reluctance to travel such a distance to play a match because it can interfere with their preparation but we just need to play games," Sheedy said.

"We've already expanded nationally with our game now it's time to grow it internationally." Giants boss David Matthews said: "We've got two kids in our academy from Indian heritage and you only had to be in the crowd at ANZ Stadium for the Twenty20 international to see what sort of an atmosphere an Indian crowd creates."

Tendulkar's Test teammate, Rahul Dravid, is a patron of the new Richmond supporter group, the Indian Tigers, which the club believes is an important first step in getting the Indian community involved in the AFL.

"It will give Indians another team and another sport to follow," Dravid said.

"I have watched some games on television - it is fast and very physical. It would be great to see a game played in India."

The match is seen as a way to repair Melbourne's troubled relationship with India after last year's rash of assaults on students.

Premier Ted Baillieu was in Mumbai over the weekend promoting Victoria as a tourist destination, and is believed to have discussed the AFL match.

Good social skills depend on picking up on other people's moods?a feat the brain performs by combining numerous sensory clues

Image: Hugh Kretschmer/Getty Images

In Brief

  1. Understanding what others are feeling, thinking and wanting is essential to successful social interaction.
  2. We sense the emotions of others by combining disparate clues: expressions, gestures, body posture, tone of voice and even odor.
  3. Scientists have fingered brain regions that integrate disparate sensory signals that may be associated with a particular person or scene.

When someone approaches you to ask, ?What?s wrong?? you know that you are broadcasting unhappiness, whether or not you said a word. Perhaps it was a grimace or your sluggish gait that conveyed the message. You cannot help but communicate your mood to colleagues, neighbors and fellow commuters through numerous subtle cues.

(AP) ? New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner whose dispatches captured untold stories from Baghdad under "shock and awe" bombing to Libya wracked by civil war, died Thursday of an asthma attack in Syria while reporting on the uprising against its president.

Shadid, 43, who survived a gunshot wound in the West Bank in 2002 and was captured for six days in Libya last year, was returning with smugglers from Syria to Turkey when he collapsed, the Times said.

Times photographer Tyler Hicks told the newspaper that Shadid had suffered one bout of asthma the first night, followed by a more severe attack a week later on the way out of the country.

"I stood next to him and asked if he was OK, and then he collapsed," Hicks told the Times.

Hicks said that Shadid was unconscious and that his breathing was "very faint" and "very shallow." He said that after a few minutes he could see that Shadid "was no longer breathing."

Hicks later carried Shadid's body to Turkey after this latest attack, the newspaper said.

"Anthony was one of our generation's finest reporters," Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger said in a statement. "He was also an exceptionally kind and generous human being. He brought to his readers an up-close look at the globe's many war-torn regions, often at great personal risk. We were fortunate to have Anthony as a colleague, and we mourn his death."

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati wrote on his Twitter account: "Sincere condolences to journalist Anthony Shadid's (RIP) family, friends & New York Times colleagues. I've known and admired him personally. N.M."

Shadid's father, Buddy Shadid, told The Associated Press on Thursday his son had asthma all his life and had medication with him.

"(But) he was walking to the border because it was too dangerous to ride in the car," the father said. "He was walking behind some horses ? he's more allergic to those than anything else ? and he had an asthma attack."

Shadid, an American of Lebanese descent, had a wife, Nada Bakri, and a son and a daughter. He had worked previously for the AP, The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. He won Pulitzer Prizes for international reporting in 2004 and 2010 when he was with the Post.

In 2004, the Pulitzer Board praised "his extraordinary ability to capture, at personal peril, the voices and emotions of Iraqis as their country was invaded, their leader toppled and their way of life upended."

Shadid also was the author of three books, including "House of Stone: A Memoir of Home, Family, and a Lost Middle East," in which he wrote about restoring his family's home in Lebanon, forthcoming next month from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

A native of Oklahoma City, Shadid graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He joined the AP in Milwaukee in 1990, worked on the International Desk in New York and served as the AP's news editor in Los Angeles. He was transferred to Cairo in 1995, covering stories in several countries.

AP Senior Managing Editor John Daniszewski, who worked with Shadid in Baghdad during the U.S. invasion in 2003, called him "a brilliant colleague who stood out both for his elegant writing and for his deep and nuanced understanding of the region."

"He was calm under fire and quietly daring, the most admired of his generation of foreign correspondents," Daniszewski said.

Martin Baron, the editor of the Globe, for whom Shadid worked while at that newspaper, told the Times that Shadid had a "profound and sophisticated understanding" of the Middle East.

"More than anything, his effort to connect foreign coverage with real people on the ground, and to understand their lives, is what made his work so special," Baron said. "It wasn't a matter of diplomacy: it was a matter of people, and how their lives were so dramatically affected by world events."

Ralph Nader, the former third-party presidential candidate, called Shadid "a great, great reporter."

"His courage, stamina, intellect and extraordinary powers of observation respected his readers' intelligence while elevating his profession's standards," the longtime consumer advocate said in a statement.

Nader added in a phone call to the AP that he knew Shadid from his time at The Washington Post and had met his family.

"What a loss," he said.

Shadid had been reporting in Syria for a week, gathering information on the resistance to the Syrian government and calls for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down, the Times said. The exact circumstances and location of his death were unclear, it said.

Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson sent a note to the newsroom Thursday evening, relaying the news of Shadid's death and remembering him.

"Anthony died as he lived ? determined to bear witness to the transformation sweeping the Middle East and to testify to the suffering of people caught between government oppression and opposition forces," she wrote.

Shadid, long known for covering wars and other conflicts in the Middle East, was among four reporters detained for six days by Libyan forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi last March.

Speaking to an audience in Oklahoma City about a month after his release, he said he had a conversation with his father the night before he was detained.

"Maybe a little bit arrogantly, perhaps with a little bit of conceit, I said, 'It's OK, Dad. I know what I'm doing. I've been in this situation before,'" Shadid told the crowd of several dozen people. "I guess on some level I felt that if I wasn't there to tell the story, the story wouldn't be told."

When Shadid's wife was asked at the time whether she worried about him returning to writing about conflicts, she said as a journalist she understood that he might need to.

"At the end of the day, he's my husband, and the thought of going through life without him and raising our children alone is terrible," she said afterward.

Shadid's father, who lives in Oklahoma City, said a colleague tried to revive his son after he was stricken Thursday but couldn't.

"They were in an isolated place. There was no doctor around," Buddy Shadid said. "It took a couple of hours to get him to a hospital in Turkey."

Searching the souls of dissidents

Michael Bond, contributor

BeautifulSouls-200x300.jpgPEOPLE who blow the whistle on unethical practices - or break ranks in protest at what those around them are doing - are rarely cast as heroes in their time. More often they are judged on their disloyalty to their colleagues rather than their contribution to the greater good. Hence the vilification of Bradley Manning, the US soldier accused of providing Wikileaks with classified reports about the Iraq war and what he considered the "criminal political backdealings" of American officials. Many Americans consider him a traitor.

In Beautiful Souls, journalist Eyal Press explores what motivates such people to heed the voice of their conscience despite the threat of ostracism or worse. This book is a study in the psychology of dissent, but more explicitly it is a collection of stories very well told, a biography of unlikely courage - unlikely because Press chooses people who are not brazenly heroic and whose noncompliance is subtle, their deeds largely unsung.

They include people like Paul Gr?ninger, a police commander in north-east Switzerland who at the start of the second world war was dismissed for refusing to enforce a law barring Jewish refugees from entering the country; Aleksander Jevtic, a Serb who in the early 1990s at great personal risk saved dozens of Croats from death or torture by convincing his superiors they were Serbs; and Leyla Wydler, a financial adviser who was fired from Stanford International Bank for drawing attention to its dubious investment practices some years before regulators pulled the plug on the company.

To make sense of what drives such people, Press strives for psychological explanations, but they are not forthcoming. Apart from resolute moral conviction, these individuals have little in common that might predict such behaviour. Rarely is there a rousing backstory to heroism. Jevtic turns out to be a self-confessed layabout, much to the author's disappointment. And though Press doesn't mention him in this book, Oskar Schindler, who famously saved hundreds of Jews from the gas chambers during the Holocaust, went bankrupt several times before and after the war.

The lack of a convincing theory in no way undermines Press's narrative and even adds to the sense of wonder at what these people did. These were not born rebels - they suffered, often greatly, for their courage. As Press observes: "Their problem was not that they airily dismissed the values and ideals of the societies they lived in... but that they regarded them as inviolable."

Orland Park resident has big hopes for rotisserie restaurant in Tinley ...

John Mihalos wants area residents to know fast food doesn?t have to be greasy or deep-fried.

With his new restaurant Chicken Wild, which opened in Tinley Park this month, he hopes to prove fast food can be tasty and healthy, but still come at a quick pace and affordable price.

?We want them to know there is an alternative to burgers. That there is an alternative to fried food,? he said. ?It?s like a home-cooked meal, but at a fast food pace.?

Mihalos?said he has been conceptualizing Chicken Wild for more than 15 years. Based on cooking styles he learned as a boy in Greece, all meat served at Chicken Wild is cooked on a rotisserie with fresh spices and olive oil, and all side dishes are cooked each day with fresh ingredients.

?It?s a Mediterranean style of cooking that uses nothing but the finest ingredients,? he said.

Still, customers can dine in, carry out or have their food delivered, with individual meals ranging from $4.99 to $7.99.

?The type of food that we serve here, it?s normally served in four- and five-star restaurants, we just brought it into a level where economically it can make sense in the fast food industry,? he said.

Mihalos? history in the restaurant business started as a child in Greece where his grandmother operated an eatery below their family home. On the wall of Chicken Wild are traces of his beginnings with photographs of his family and of himself sitting next to a rotisserie as a young boy.

He moved from Greece to Oak Lawn when he was 13 and carried on the family tradition by working in the restaurant industry himself. He previously ran two family dining restaurants in Oak Park as well as beef and hot dog stands, yogurt shops and more in and around Chicago. For the past 10 years, he has worked mostly as a consultant but after some serious research and planning, he stepped back into the ownership role.

The Orland Park resident said he picked his new location in the former Starbucks storefront at the corner of 159th Street and Harlem Avenue to test the Chicken Wild concept. If all goes well, he has big plans for expansion.

?We have a vision of taking this to the next level and having many, many stores, first in the Chicago area, and then everywhere else we can,? he said.

Still, he plans to take the business slow. He said he will likely have a ribbon cutting event and increase his advertising in a month or so, for now he wants to the time to train his employees and work out the kinks before attracting too much attention.

?It?s a matter of wanting to do the right thing at the right speed,? he said. ?We?re looking for the long term gain, not the short term momentum.?

(AP) ? Mitt Romney says he has a?"severely conservative" record as he looks to win over voters who favored his rivals in recent contests.

Romney tells a gathering of conservative activists in Washington that he was raised with conservative values and has governed as a conservative in Massachusetts, which he called the most liberal state in the country. Romney says he was successful in business because he applied conservative principles.?

Romney is pushing to convince conservative Republicans who are skeptical about his previous support for abortion rights and required health care coverage.?

Romney has won contests in New Hampshire, Florida and Nevada. He lost South Carolina to Newt Gingrich last month and Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri on Tuesday to rival Rick Santorum, who also won Iowa in January.

Rihanna, Chris Brown Return To The Grammys: Three Years Later

With the once-troubled exes poised to return to Sunday's show, we look back on the assault that changed everything.
By Rebecca Thomas

They were R&B's answer to Britney and Justin. Young, gifted and famous, Rihanna and Chris Brown had become a favorite of the blogs and mags in 2008; pictures of them coupled up on the beach or just making a fast food run cropped up everywhere. Rihanna once remarked that Brown helped her to feel her age in a very grown-up industry.

But everything changed on the night of February 7, 2009. Brown's assault on girlfriend Rihanna would change the career trajectories of both, catapulting one to superstardom and launching the other on an unlikely comeback trail. Three years later, with the two stars are poised to return to the Grammy stage, MTV News looks back.

February 7, 2009: Rihanna hits the stage at a pre-Grammy party hosted by producer Timbaland in Los Angeles. The Bajan stunner performs her smash "Umbrella," among other tunes. Earlier that night, she's snapped looking cheerful with boyfriend Chris Brown at music honcho Clive Davis' annual Grammy bash.

February 8, 2009: Reports surface that Brown and a female passenger was involved in a car accident. E! News confirms that neither Rihanna, nor Brown will appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony that night; both were scheduled to perform. The Los Angeles Police Department begin investigating an alleged felony battery report against the Virginia crooner.

February 19, 2009: TMZ posts a gruesome photo of Rihanna taken by LAPD just after the February assault. The image of the singer — bruised, eyes swollen and mouth split — confirms what had been rumor up until then. Then-19-year-old Brown becomes the subject of public outrage. The backlash is only beginning, though, as radio stations across the country announce bans on Brown's music.

June 22, 2009: Brown has been mostly quiet, on the advice, he says, of his representatives. In May, Vibe publishes a cover story, "Tainted Love," delving into how the young couple unraveled. It's a more nuanced portrait that describes both Brown's and Rihanna's upbringing in households rife with domestic violence. It's also announced that Brown will strike a plea deal giving him 180 days of community service.

The same month, the "Forever" singer uploads a video apology to the Web: "I've told Rihanna countless times and I'm telling you today, I'm truly, truly sorry that I wasn't able to handle the situation both differently and better," he pleads.

September 2, 2009: Brown tapes an interview with CNN's "Larry King Live." Accompanied by his attorney, the singer — seldom off-pitch onstage — struggles to strike the right chord. But even His unfortunate choice of neckwear comes under scrutiny.

November 6, 2009: Rihanna sits down for a "20/20" special, detailing for anchor Diane Sawyer her assault at the hands of Brown.

November 9, 2009: Rihanna tells MTV's Sway she doesn't want to be the "domestic-violence spokesperson.".

November 20, 2009: Rihanna drops the dark and introspective Rated R, sporting a razor-cut, tough-girl 'do on the album cover that sparks a frenzy of its own in Stateside hair salons. The LP is widely received as a rumination on her tragic relationship with Brown.

May 17, 2010: Unofficially on ice with his label, Jive, Brown joins with homey and YMCMB rapper Tyga for the Fan of a Fan mixtape. The project yields slow-burning smash singles like "Deuces" and "No Bullsh--."

February 10, 2011: Two years after the incident, the "Russian Roulette" singer agrees to loosen a restraining order against Brown. Breezy also earns high marks for progress from the judge in his ongoing probation case.

November 12, 2010: Red-tressed Rihanna drops Loud, and the Grammy-nominated album is a sunny departure from the brooding R. That month she and Brown also take to their respective Twitter accounts and signal in a series of posts that they're ready to move on from the assault narrative.

March 22, 2011: Livid over questions about his relationship with ex Rihanna, Brown smashes a chair in an ABC green room after a "Good Morning America" interview. The outburst threatens to overshadow what will be a highly successful release, the F.A.M.E album.

2011: It's a year of triumphs for the former duo: From awards, to VMA performances, Grammy nods and critical acclaim, the RihannaNavy and Team Breezy rally behind their idols.

January 19, 2012: After the blogosphere lights up with rumors that Rih and Brown are hooking up again, a rep for Brown denies the two have reunited, insisting the superstar exes are "just friends." Brown's representative also confirms he won't be doing any press this year.

February 8, 2012: Recording Academy announces that Brown will perform at Sunday's show; Rihanna has been confirmed for a collabo with rockers Coldplay. The revelation sets up the potential for a public reunion.

Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don't miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn't end Sunday: MTV News has you covered until the Grammy hangover wears off!

Boehner vows to stop Obama contraceptive rule (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The top Republican in the U.S. Congress on Wednesday denounced President Barack Obama's new rule on contraceptives as an assault on "religious freedom" and vowed to overturn it, as the White House sought to prevent the issue from becoming an election-year liability.

Fanning a political firestorm, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner joined an outcry from religious leaders and social conservatives over a requirement that health insurance plans, including those at Catholic hospitals and universities, offer birth control to women.

Seeking to defuse a controversy that has roiled the 2012 presidential race, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama was sensitive to religious beliefs on contraception and wants to find a way to implement the decision that can "allay some of the concerns expressed."

Republicans have seized upon the issue, seeing it as a chance to paint Obama as anti-religion and put him on the defensive at a time when signs of economic improvement appear to have energized his re-election bid.

The White House seemed to have been caught by surprise by the fury of the response, and stepped up efforts to calm objections by suggesting the door might be open to compromise.

"This attack ... on religious freedom in our country cannot stand and will not stand," Boehner vowed in a speech on the floor of his chamber.

The escalating fight centers on a provision in the 2010 healthcare law that requires health insurance to cover basic birth control services for women - even at Catholic charities, hospitals and universities.

Catholic bishops contend the policy infringes on religious liberty because the church does not condone the use of birth control pills or other contraceptives.

Boehner said if the president refuses to rescind the measure, Congress will do so legislatively.

But such a bill would have little chance of getting through a divided Congress. While Boehner may be able to win backing in the Republican-dominated House, he faces problems in the Senate, which is controlled by Obama's fellow Democrats.

Still, Obama is in a political bind. A retreat would anger his liberal base, while refusal to budge could alienate some Catholic voters.

SEEKING TO CALM CONCERNS

At the White House, Carney said the administration was "focused on implementation of this rule," but made clear that it had time to address opponents' concerns. He offered no specific concessions.

"There are ways to approach this that would ensure that the rule is implemented so that women have access to these important healthcare services no matter where they work, but also hopefully would allay some of the concerns," Carney said.

The rule has drawn heavy fire from the political right, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Carney took a swipe at Romney on Wednesday, calling him an "odd messenger" to be attacking Obama on the issue. He said it was "ironic" because Romney was criticizing Obama for pursuing a policy that is "virtually identical with the one that was in place when he was governor of Massachusetts."

"In a case like this sometimes folks try to make political hay out of it," Carney said.

Romney, speaking to reporters in Atlanta, shot back that Carney "needs to check his history," saying the birth-control provision was already in effect when he took office and that he tried to get it removed.

With the matter threatening to explode into a major election-year fight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he and fellow Senate Democrats support the president.

"Some have decided, again, to use women's health for political football," said U.S. Representative Lois Capps, a Democrat.

Backers of Obama's new rule say employees of faith-based groups should have access to birth control services in their health insurance coverage.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, an outspoken opponent of the rule, said he and fellow Senate Republicans were considering their options.

"The short answer is that we're discussing the appropriate response," McConnell told reporters after a closed-door meeting with his members.

The Obama administration said on Tuesday it was willing to work with church-affiliated employers to implement the new policy, which was finalized on January 20 but will not take effect until next year.

During the weekend, clergy from the Catholic Church called for congregations across the country to pressure Obama to back down.

Boehner said, "Americans of every faith and political persuasion have mobilized in objection" to the rule, which he said "constitutes an unambiguous attack on religious freedom."

"This rule would require faith-based employers ... to provide services they consider immoral," he said, including, "sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and devices, and contraception."

Most cancers is scientifically called bronchial carcinoma or ...

Asbestos Lung Most cancers is scientifically often known as bronchial carcinoma or mesothelioma. It is a most cancers with the lining with the lungs, heart, or abdomen. I discovered out also that a most cancers often known as thoracic carcinoma or adenocarcinoma. Every one of these cancers are joined instantly to exposure to asbestos.

There aren?t any fast indications of asbestos lung most cancers or mesothelioma creating at the time you are exposed. What I necessarily mean is, over the equivalent day, week, or possibly thirty day period of your respective heavy ipage coupon exposure to asbestos will lung most cancers provide you with indications of its increasing. No, this most cancers will consider any place from twenty to forty yrs from exposure to asbestos associated most cancers creating.

Smoking enormously will increase the asbestos lung most cancers price around customers who do not smoke. Now, really don?t get me completely wrong both equally will bring about most cancers, both equally will bring about lung most cancers independently. Having said that it may be claimed that the heavier a smoker you may be the bigger the asbestos lung most cancers possibility you may have if also exposed to asbestos for some time. The perfect guidance? Stop cigarette smoking. Should you need to have guidance quitting, get it.

Some other issue to creating mesothelioma in afterwards yrs immediately after exposure to asbestos would be the duration of time together with the amount of asbestos the person is exposed. They train us that everyone is exposed to asbestos in second amounts nearly every day. Having said that, a employee in an intensely asbestos dirt circumstances or making use of goods daily with asbestos contained in them would be the a person together with the bigger hazard of creating lung most cancers. Lately it has been reported broadly that lung most cancers has become the world?s major bring about of most cancers deaths. That is definitely a staggering stat, and i have missing family members to this and to asbestos lung most cancers ? mesothelioma. Guys needless to say have the higher hazard than girls. My thoughts tells me this is because additional men deliver the results in sectors making use of asbestos that contains goods.

Also in danger are personnel used inside the manufacturing, milling, and mining sectors. Persons as I discussed previously who deliver the results with asbestos goods around long durations. U.S. military veterans, shipyard personnel, and exclusively everyone who served inside the military department the Navy in Marketplace War two possess a big hazard of creating asbestos lung most cancers. This WW two vets exclusively as a result of the big exposure price inside the putting together and working of battleships. These exposed folks can also be in danger of asbestosis, which can be a scarring of their lungs from asbestos. It is a long-term issue that restricts respiratory in the scarring, my father acquired this and his respiratory was enormously restricted. I found a once bodily lively guy who performed athletics and was solid be reduced to not able to stroll for the following area with out oxygen. I feel it truly is tricky hostpapa coupon for me to think about asbestos as becoming a specific thing actually mined in the earth. I typically connect items in the earth as normal and healthy, like backyard food items, h2o, fish, and so forth. This modifications my point of view concerning how to take a look at distinct items now. I guess tobacco is usually a normal plant, that has a really flower and till guy possibly chews or smokes it truly is isn?t deadly to us. Asbestos is similar I guess, not deadly till guy began making use of it.
The word asbestos was produced from a Greek word which suggests inextinguishable or unquenchable. The word asbestos is employed to talk about a substance which is fibrous and is also utilized in business, development and many others. It is heat-resistant; and when additional to other substances creates them much better.

The particles from asbestos may become airborne; and when customers breathe in these particles, this results in Asbestosis or scarring of lung tissue. These particles can bring about Mesothelioma, which can be a most cancers with the lungs, belly or heart. You can find differing types of asbestos that happen to be chosen; although not all of them bring about these illnesses.

Asbestos is mined and it has been because the late 1800s and tens of millions of individuals have been completely afflicted by dirt from it. In recent years, it has been mandated that everyone working with asbestos put on protecting apparel and machines. Not all of us who?s exposed establish illnesses a result of asbestos. There have been completely instances whereby loved ones residing with asbestos personnel establish mesothelioma, potentially from handling the apparel with the asbestos personnel. I had been astonished to find out this actuality myself, I believed it absolutely was deadly, time period.

Many times the signs or symptoms do not indicate up for 30 or forty yrs immediately after exposure. Several of the signs or symptoms are chest problems, difficulty respiratory, belly problems, bodyweight reduction and bowel obstruction. Having said that, these signs or symptoms may be a result of other not as much severe types of conditions. Thus, it truly is particularly crucial that you see a health care provider about any of these signs or symptoms. Your doctor will carry out a range of checks and choose the sort of remedy wanted based upon a range of reasons, this sort of as age, medical historical past, variety of Mesothelioma and just how much superior it truly is.

The various sorts of Mesothelioma are Pleural, Peritonea and Pericardial. Pleural Mesothelioma is usually a variety of most cancers that has effects on the lining with the lungs. The Pleura creates a fluid that lubricates so that the lungs can move freely although respiratory. This type creates up a considerable proportion ipage coupon and is also the commonest. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is usually a most cancers that has effects on the lining with the belly together with the fluid that lubricates and safeguards the belly. It is a not as much typical variety. Pericardial Mesothelioma would be the the very least typical variety and is also a most cancers that has effects on the lining with the heart together with the fluid which lets the heart to breathe freely with out obstruction.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S (Unlocked)

Unlocked smartphones don't get much love in the U.S. thanks to their unsubsidized (read: high) up-front prices. But the Sony Xperia Arc S ($499.99) is still worth a look, particularly if you're fond of Sony's attention to detail and emphasis on multimedia playback. It's a fine music and video player, makes quick work of Android apps and the Web, and doesn't take up much room in your pocket, either. It's a good buy for AT&T subscribers who don't want to lock themselves into a contract.

Design and Call Quality
Most touch-screen slabs look alike when powered off, but the Xperia Arc S has a few nice design touches that distinguish it from the pack. My test unit was made of glossy black plastic, but you can also get one in white, silver, dark blue, or pink. It measures 4.9 by 2.5 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.1 ounces. Sony lists the phone as being 0.34 inches thick, but that's a slight misrepresentation, as there's both a gentle curve to the design as well as a slight thickening at the edges. Sit it next to an iPhone 4 (0.37 inches), and the Sony is thicker.

The expansive 4.2-inch, 480-by-854-pixel glass touch screen looks sharp and vibrant, and it's large enough that I had no trouble typing in either portrait or landscape mode. Considering the size of the screen, this is a small, lightweight smartphone, and an antidote to the big honking Android monsters currently in vogue. One minor demerit: The volume rocker switch and the camera shortcut buttons are tiny and sharp-edged, although they're easy enough to locate without looking.

The Xperia Arc S is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and tri-band HSPA+ 14.4 (850/1900/2100 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. That means it's compatible with AT&T and overseas 3G bands, but not T-Mobile's. Call quality was excellent, with a clear, bright tone in the earpiece and plenty of available volume. Transmissions through the mic were also clear, although the Xperia Arc S let through a small amount of street noise. Reception was fine.

Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). Voice dialing was hopeless; it triggered over Bluetooth but never heard any of my test numbers correctly. The speakerphone went surprisingly loud for a thin phone, and with little distortion. Battery life was a disappointment at just 4 hours and 35 minutes of talk time.

User Interface and Apps
Out of the box, the Xperia Arc S runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), but Sony deserves kudos for being the only major smartphone manufacturer to promise Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) updates for all of its 2011 and 2012 smartphones by the middle of this year.

Sony's UI layer is easy to like, even if you normally prefer stock Android. The home screens and menu panels glide smoothly as you swipe between them. Hold down the menu icon for a moment, and all the icons will wiggle, indicating you can customize the app drawer itself as well as drop icons on the home screens. Contacts get huge photos, and the dialer adds redial shortcuts to each entry in the call log.

Otherwise, all of the usual Android benefits are here, including free Google Maps Navigation for voice-enabled GPS, a powerful WebKit browser, and access to hundreds of thousands of apps in Android Market. The 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 MSM8255 processor is no longer state of the art, but it gets the job done for regular tasks. Low frame rates in our benchmark tests signaled the Xperia Arc S isn't much of a gaming phone, though.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack, 8GB microSD card, and included Sony earbuds make the Xperia Arc S a fine music player right out of the box. My 32GB SanDisk card worked fine, but you have to pull the battery to swap cards, which is annoying. There's also 294MB of free internal storage. Music tracks sounded fine through Samsung Modus HM6450 Bluetooth headphones ($99, 4 stars), and quite good through the included wired stereo pair of earbuds, with impressive bass extension.

The music player app rocks; it lets you drag and drop tracks to make playlists with one tap from the main screen, and you can search Google for lyrics, Wikipedia for artist info, and music and karaoke videos on YouTube for the current song. Standalone videos fared well as long as I stuck with 720p MP4 and H.264 files. DivX and XviD files were out, and so was anything encoded in 1080p. A covered mini-HDMI port on top lets you output video to a TV, although there's no cable included with the phone.

The 8.1-megapixel auto-focus camera features face recognition, smile detection, geotagging, and an LED flash. There's no front-facing camera, a strange omission. Test photos looked good, and about average for this class of sensor, with impressive detail. Images had some light balance issues and a slightly washed-out look, but otherwise it's a good stand-in for a point-and-shoot. Recorded 1280-by-720-pixel (720p) videos looked sharp and played smoothly at 29 frames per second, and the image stabilization feature is welcome.

If you want something that looks sharp, travels light, and lets you use any SIM card you want, the Xperia Arc S is a solid buy. That said, the Samsung Galaxy S II ($799, 4 stars) remains our Editors' Choice for unlocked smartphones, thanks to its dual-core processor, superior battery life, and much faster HSPA+ 21 data speeds. Granted, the Sony Xperia Arc S retails for a whopping $300 less than the Galaxy S II, but street prices are much closer now that the Galaxy S II has been out for a few months. If you want a keyboard, the unlocked version of the Samsung Captivate Glide ($599.99, 4 stars) is also available; we awarded the subsidized AT&T version Editors' Choice award for keyboarded smartphones.

Parades Public Festivals, Public Spectacles

Ed. Note: So the New York Giants won the super bowl, and there will be a parade not too far from my office today. I?m have no intention of leaving the office?parade or no parade, I?m not a Giants fan and my football wounds are still a bit raw, and the crowds are a little intense?but it seemed like a good time to revisit this post that I wrote following the parade for the New York Yankees in 2009. (I?m not a fan of them either, but the parade was a novelty at the time.) Wondering how a New Yorker be a fan of anything but a New York team? I address that here.

Whether you care or not, if you live in the United States, you undoubtedly know by now that the New York Yankees won their 27th World Series title. As part of the winning tradition, the players and relevant staff were honored with a ticker tape parade on Friday, Nov. 6th, down the Canyon of Heroes (also known as Broadway when it isn?t packed with screaming sports fans). The parade wound its way down to City Hall, where recently re-elected Mayor Bloomberg presented the team with the keys to the city.

Parades are held to mark a celebration. They?re a form of public festival that draws in the community, and actually work to reestablish social ties: The idea is that we are all gathered to celebrate the same accomplishment?we are united in our celebration. Parade-goers are linked by their sense of pride and camaraderie. In a larger sense, parades are also a spectacle. It?s a chance for a community to put on a show for their neighbors, to demonstrate their dominance. The accomplishment being celebrated connects the people present, but it also distinguishes them from others as well. And there is a great deal of preparation that goes into the show?from transit to safety to entrepreneurship to turning a blind eye when employees go missing for a few hours, everyone has a part to play. The spectacle is supported by the government because it provides a momentum that can be used. If buildings need to be built, laws need to be passed, or even wars need to be started, the momentum from such public celebrations can be mobilized. This sense of pride can carry forth many political agendas.

Ethnographers should always try to understand their biases, and their audiences should also have a sense of how the objectivity of information may be compromised. So before I go on, I need to confess that I considered calling this post ?Infiltrating Enemy Territory.? I am not a Yankees fan, as some of you may have surmised. I root for that other New York team, whose name I will not mention in a post about a parade for their rivals. Parades have a huge cultural element to them: they can reveal a great deal about the character and personality of a people through the ways in which society responds to these occasions. Regardless of the cause, a parade is still a chance to think about and talk about crowd dynamics. So as a dedicated anthropologist (who works within the vicinity of the parade route), I elbowed my way into enemy camp on Friday morning, bore witness to the scene, and extricated myself when chants of ?Boston Sucks!? began to rise in pitch and intensity (belatedly realizing that I was wearing a red jacket?the color associated with the Yankees? arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox, and the team they beat for the championship, the Philadephia Phillies).

The day began early for many fans. A great many people called in late or played hooky entirely, and teachers may have noticed a few empty desks on Friday morning. My morning commute was slightly more hectic than usual, as I contended with the large number of fans boarding the LIRR and subway. (which operates in a system similar to the LIRR) shared his morning commute with a dog who alternated between wandering the aisle and hopping up on the seat much to the annoyance of the conductor. Food vendors selling breakfast staples were doing brisk business as I made my way to my office building, weaving between the droves of people trying to get to Broadway. The came from all directions, of different sizes, shapes, and colors, all sporting the navy blue of their team. And there to greet them were the opportunistic street vendors who saw an chance to make a quick and relatively easy profit: banners and hats were $5.00, t-shirts cost $10.00.

At about a quarter to eleven, I slipped into my jacket, grabbed my camera and hurried west on Wall Street. Several small groups?families with young children in tow?passed me, emitting triumphant whoops of joy. We all soon encountered a road block that could have ended all parade activities right then: Wall Street was closed at William Street, a good two blocks from Broadway. The police were blocking off street perpendicular to Broadway as they filled with people, and given the high profile of Wall Street itself, extra precautions were being taken to preserve the landmark. A cop advised us to walk north, so we walked a block to Pine Street, passing some more vendors, and turned west again to pack together as closely as we could to get a glimpse of the parade route. I ultimately wound up approximately half a block away from Broadway and still could only just see the events ahead of me. People got creative in searching for a good spot. Some climbed on the shoulders and backs of accommodating friends, boyfriends, and parents. Others climbed on top of city vehicles, though they were quickly chased off by watchful police. Some scaled buildings. Many buildings downtown have ledges about eight feet or so above the ground. They aren?t wide, but if you?re nimble, you can perch there to get above the crowd. And still others hung out of office windows.

The crowd seemed to feed off of the growing energy. Laughter would erupt, and in true Yankees fan form, chants of ?Boston Sucks!? and ?Phillies Suck!? and ?Let?s Go Yankees!? and ?Twen-ty Sev-en??the hyphens emphasize the musical intonation of that particular chant?would swell periodically. It was definitely something to feel: a sea of people packed into side streets in shoulder to shoulder formation, speaking as one and thinking as one (except for the impostor in the red jacket). We were momentarily transported back to the stadium. The chants were something that everyone could participate in, including those who had not made it to a side street before the police began barricading those as well. But in truth, even those at the very end of the blocks and the people behind the barricades didn?t seem upset that they couldn?t see their beloved team. They were content to stand there, to be a part of the crowd, and take up their favorite war cries.

"Ticker tape" fills the sky. Photo by KDCosta, 2009.

?Ticker tape? (really just shredded paper), thrown from buildings, drifted through the clear blue sky. In no time at all, the ground was covered, and everyone standing in the vicinity had scraps of paper in their hair and on their jackets. Ticker tape parades are unique to urban settings. They originated (where else?) in New York City. The first parade of this kind occured in 1886, when ticker tape was thrown during the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. The tape came from the old stock ticker machines, and when they were replaced by their electronic cousins, the ticker tape that filled the sky for these parades came from shredded office waste paper and city-supplied confetti. Caught in the wind, the scraps drifted for miles, blanketing Wall Street and the neighborhood. Lumbering street sweeping vehicles were on standby to get things back to order once the ceremonies wrapped up.

So there I was, in my red jacket, standing amongst a throng of people who probably would have fed me to the lions in the Colosseum had they known of my true loyalties. A cheer began to grow from the right along Broadway, cameras were thrust into the air around me, and the band marched by. Not to be dissuaded, the crowd continued to roar, their cries growing louder as the official photographers made their way down the Canyon. And then finally,They came. The moment these people had been waiting for arrived, and the crowd erupted, extending to the peripheries. In fact, those were the folks who probably yelled the loudest. Children were hoisted into the air. Hats were waved. A woman began to cry.

Remember when I said that athletes are our representatives on a public stage? We support teams because we believe in them?we trust them to protect our interests on the national stage. Well, the parade-goers turned out to say ?Thank you.? That was the feeling that seemed to radiate through the crowd. Yes, there was a bit of arrogance, but a certain amount of swagger is to be expected from the victorious?particularly when it is cultivated, and believe me, New Yorkers cultivate their swagger. People were there to say thank you. The spectaclewas in the showing. The turnout was meant to send a clear message to rivals, and perhaps the strength of voices behind the cheers and the chants were meant to carry?I wonder if the hair on the backs of the necks of Bostonians and Philadelphians stood on end at that moment. Could the energy from this group have been so great as to travel that distance?

Once the team passed, people began to trickle away from Broadway. Some were going back to their offices, like me, and others were headed to City Hall for the final celebration, and still others were packing into bars and joining lines to buy hot dogs and chicken with rice from food vendors. The mood was jubilant. Vendors were still hawking their wares as I made my way back toward Wall Street, fighting the crowd heading in the direction of City Hall. But the day was not over for many. Those who did not have tickets to the City Hall ceremony seemed content to mill about and drink in the remaining atmosphere.

The effects of this public festival/spectacle will last well beyond the coming baseball season. The city?s spirit has been renewed by this gathering of fans?even though they don?t represent the complete spectrum of baseball supporters in New York. The festival/spectacle has permitted the assertion of a sense of social dominance and it will be something that all residents?whether you support this team or not?will carry with them in their travels. Our reputation, whether we want to share in it or not, has been bolstered. Once again, we are a city united, albeit some more reluctantly than others. The parade created a substantial expense for the city, which probably saw a tab in the range of $330,000.00?do the long term effects outweigh these costs?
